Ellen DeGeneres Shape Magazine May 2010

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

“Food used to be really important to me. I loved steak, I loved hamburgers, I loved all that stuff. I can’t believe how irresponsible I was, eating what I ate….”

Emmy-winning talk show host and American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres may be the first Shape cover model to not don a two piece for her guest sport on the health & wellness mag — but the comedienne does share some helpful tips for how she keeps her body in tip-top condition.

El — a yoga fanatic — adheres to a strict diet that excludes all meats, diary, and sugar.

“No animals, no dairy, nothing processed; a lot of soup, veggies, rice, beans, legumes. I want to be on my toes; I want to have energy. And as much as the diet seems like a sacrifice, it’s helping me.”

I think this is like the 4th time I've seen someone on this cover without the stupid bikini and the same stupid pose.

what no bikini?
gjee 15th-Apr-2010 11:05 am (UTC)
its crazy just how much more energy you have when you eat healthy. the weirdest thing is you don't even crave junk food anymore.

isn't that why girls are having their periods earlier and earlier? because of all the harsh chemicals we take in? i got my period when i was 11 but everyone my mom's age got it around 15-16 and she said her mom got it when she was older than that! =\

i was walking home and passing by an elementary school and some fourth grader was talking about getting her period =\ thats not normal NOW is it?
loveyourgr0und 15th-Apr-2010 11:14 am (UTC)
How old are fourth graders?
gjee 15th-Apr-2010 11:15 am (UTC)
9-10 usually
tyffi 15th-Apr-2010 11:32 am (UTC)
It's not just the chemicals in the food - though they may play in. It's more the better nutrition. Most of us don't suffer hunger anymore when growing up, or lacking vitamines, etc because all kind of food is constantly available.

Anyway, a forth grader ahving their menstruation is really young. I was convinced the average date for a girl to get her menstruation was 12 - give or take a year.
fortunaestcaeca 15th-Apr-2010 12:21 pm (UTC)
i started my period in fourth grade. i was 10. it's younger than average but it's not abnormal.
spiffle 15th-Apr-2010 12:31 pm (UTC)
I was fat. That's why I got mine at 10. Well, that's how I figured it anyway.
lafrijole 15th-Apr-2010 01:03 pm (UTC)
that's interesting... I was 12... they're getting younger?.... If I could afford it I would eat much healthier, but I'm super picky, and almost went fucking bankrupt eating free range and organic...
glowing_dragon 15th-Apr-2010 02:08 pm (UTC)
Period icon. :D
hotpinkluver 15th-Apr-2010 02:20 pm (UTC)
Yeah, the chemicals we ingest are really bad for us in the long run and not just in terms of getting your period earlier etc. Although I got my period at 12 and so did my mom and her sister so it didn't really get much worse. Plus my cousin got hers at 16 and she ate so much crap. :/ I think it does contribute but it also depends on the person.
shortliljackers 15th-Apr-2010 02:31 pm (UTC)
idk. i got mine when i was in 5th grade and i ate really, really healthy as a child. my dad always made homemade meals which were well-balanced, rarely ate out especially at fast food restaurants, i rarely drank pop, my mom never really bought junk food except for the occasional ice cream and little debbies, etc.

however, i do know that two friends of mine who eat incredibly unhealthy didn't get it until they were 16-17ish. actually, i think one of them didn't get hers until she was 18.

so who knows.
beaddddddsss 15th-Apr-2010 02:56 pm (UTC)
Oh, god. Yes, it is normal. It is highly normal for women to have early periods. This isn't some new 21st century epidemic, but a very common thing throughout all of femalekind. I admire your concern for harsh chemicals within children's (and anyone's) diet, but this overall shock of people that girls get their periods before 12 is appalling because it is so very common. Just because someone has an early period and starts developing faster than other girls does not mean they are overtaking processed foods or hormones, it just means that their bodies are made that way.

Chemicals in food alone cannot jump-start a period. I don't know how many times my gynecologic professor has told us this. Just as stress and an emotionally unstable environment cannot jump-start a period. All these things can be contributing factors to speeding up the process just as as these very things can be the contributing factors in preventing the process. Every female body reacts differently. A combination of a lot of things can be attributed to higher period frequency and no frequency at all, depending on the person. When I'm eating a lot of processed foods or feel too stressed out, I never get my period. When one of my best friends in particular stresses out or is going through a bad time, her period can come as frequently as twice a month and last for eight days. Anything can trigger menstruation into acting differently, in its onslaught and so on. I started menstruating when I was 9 not because of what I ate or any other influences, but simply because that is how my body work. My mother got hers at 10, my grandmother at 14 and my great grandmother at 9 just as I did. There are always going to be outliers and young periods and tween periods, these shifts and separations are all normal and have always been occurring. It's part of the great thing of having ovaries that want to go down a slip-n-slide when its not convenient for us, and realizing menstruation can be triggered by myriad things, but its ultimate investor is your body itself regardless of anything else.

/tl;dr medical explanation
yackyackyack 15th-Apr-2010 03:15 pm (UTC)
IKR? I recently bought this lunch container with three compartments and I make sure every day to fill two of the compartments with at least four servings of fruits and vegetables and then I force myself to eat them. I also have started eating a lot of organic quinoa. I take my vitamins, too, and work out 5 times a week. I used to have to drink coffee every day to wake up but now I hop out of bed with no problem and don't even need it. It's amazing what happens when you cut out sugar and fuel your body with good things instead. You eat smaller portions, too, because it's more filling.
punkywuxhere 15th-Apr-2010 05:16 pm (UTC)
One of my friends got her period when she was 8, poor thing.

I'm pretty sure all the hormones in milk are making girls develop faster. That's why you see all these 12-year-olds looking all ~womanly~ and shit XD.
bits_and_tits 15th-Apr-2010 11:10 am (UTC)
That photo is horrible.

I LOVE ELLEN THOUGH!
gjee 15th-Apr-2010 11:21 am (UTC)
wasn't she wearing white in her cover for Oprah's magazine?
burningmarl 15th-Apr-2010 12:56 pm (UTC)
In my head I always imagine her wearing white. I swear she wears it all the time.
havealemon 15th-Apr-2010 01:59 pm (UTC)
Your icon is mesmerizing. :O
purpleplague 15th-Apr-2010 11:17 am (UTC)
It bothers me when people say things like this. I am not fat and I eat a lot of "bad" food and I don't exercise for more than 20 minutes a day, sometimes 40 but that is rare. I weigh 104 lbs. I am also a recovered anorexic. I am the healthiest when I listen to my body and eat whatever I want in reasonable portions when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full. When I do this I eat the PERFECT amount for my individual body...I don't overeat nor do I undereat. When I try to restrict/diet though I just end up binging and gaining weight.

I mean, if you are listening to your body you are not going to eat five hamburgers a day and an entire cake. Trust yourself. IT IS OKAY. No food is bad unless you eat a ton of it.
purpleplague 15th-Apr-2010 11:18 am (UTC)
that being said I love Ellen. And I know her wife is a recovered anorexic so I don't get why she would spread this kind of message...it can really be damaging. Eating junk food isn't being irresponsible. It's just food. Stop giving it moral values.
hibbleton 15th-Apr-2010 12:25 pm (UTC)
ia with everything you said! :claps:
lovetogoss 15th-Apr-2010 01:39 pm (UTC)
It's just food. Stop giving it moral values.

AMEN!
shortliljackers 15th-Apr-2010 02:36 pm (UTC)
agreed.
heliotrope12 15th-Apr-2010 04:46 pm (UTC)
"It's just food. Stop giving it moral values."

BRAVO.

Seriously, I am so tired of self-righteous douchebags who judge people for eating a bag of chips or a burger once in awhile. Just relax and enjoy life. Food really doesn't need to be a psychological battleground.
somerset 15th-Apr-2010 09:13 pm (UTC)
It's just food. Stop giving it moral values.

amen
tell_a_tale_4_u 15th-Apr-2010 11:21 am (UTC)
I agree with your post. Stop worrying so much and enjoy it instead. If you feel bad about eating certain things, or force yourself to eat stuff you don't like it's gonna come out the wrong way. Been there, done that. Same as you. So yeah, ITA.
munkeycheeze 15th-Apr-2010 11:33 am (UTC)
I agree with your comment about listening to our bodies. I think Ellen's point is that she has stopped eating animal products for ethical reasons. That's what she means by being irresponsible. She isn't doing this for weight reasons, but having more energy is just a positive result.
lafrijole 15th-Apr-2010 01:06 pm (UTC)
you're one of the lucky ones bb [eating disorder excl, of course- glad you're recovering]... we can't all just eat whatever we want, even in small portions.. for some people it's like smoking... you can't NOT eat it if it's on your plate!!

And some food is bad... some people [don't know if it's true, tbqh] just announced that some fast foods, or foods really high fat, can become addictive.
antiheroine 15th-Apr-2010 03:37 pm (UTC)
if i listen to my body i will eat everything in sight... my head wants me to be in a constant state of snacking :(
lulufairybubble 15th-Apr-2010 11:12 pm (UTC)
I think she just meant she was making healthy choices.
There's nothing wrong with having any food in moderation, but a lot of people have issues with moderation and she was one of them.
purpleplague 15th-Apr-2010 11:22 am (UTC)
ANYWAY CAN THIS BE A FOOD POST NOW?

I JUST HAD A ROOT CANAL AND I'M SO FUCKING HUNGRY AND I CAN'T EAT REAL FOOD!!! All I can eat is soft liquidy type stuff like yogurt/cottage cheese/soup/melted chocolate and it is not filling me up. I'm so hungry right now that it is actually a bit painful. I just want to be able to eat a slice of pizza is that too much to ask.
tyffi 15th-Apr-2010 11:25 am (UTC)
Aww... *hugs* Have you tried baby food? I lived of it when I got my wisdom teeth removed.

I had filled peppers with rice for lunch. Really yummy. xD
purpleplague 15th-Apr-2010 11:27 am (UTC)
omg I think I'd rather be this hungry than eat baby food. I would vom

filled peppers with rice sounds DELICIOUS though
fly_chickadee 15th-Apr-2010 02:55 pm (UTC)
Eurgh, baby food.
I had gastric bypass surgery in January, and for the first month my diet was pureed. You run out of food options after a while, so I tried baby food and it was so BLAND. Bleugh.

The peppers sound tasty. I could eat those!
lafrijole 15th-Apr-2010 01:07 pm (UTC)
protein shakes!!!!!
glowing_dragon 15th-Apr-2010 02:10 pm (UTC)
Plain congee?
endingonfire 15th-Apr-2010 03:13 pm (UTC)
I ate mashed yams for an entire week when I had oral surgery done. I fucking love that shit.
dream_manderley 15th-Apr-2010 03:28 pm (UTC)
when i had my wisdom teeth out I couldn't eat solids and it was hell.

but you should make a tofu smoothie. It sounds gross, but if you get the silken kind and add banana, peanut butter & chocolate then its super yummy & super filling. I lived off of tofu smoothies for a week.
emeyea 15th-Apr-2010 08:13 pm (UTC)
I KNOW YOU SAID SOUP'S NOT FILLING YOU UP. HOWEVER.

When I had mine taken out a few years ago, I lived on Campbell's Soup-at-Hands, primarily the Creamy Tomato soup and the Creamy Chicken. The chicken does have little pieces of chicken in it but I just didn't drink those. It was pretty filling.

That, and Starbucks hot chocolate no whipped cream. I lived on those and a cocktail of hydrocodone/advil/ibuprofen. And a heating pad on my pillow. And my Pookie. And a LOT of Vin Diesel action movies.
tyffi 15th-Apr-2010 11:23 am (UTC)
Ugh, I really hate those statements. Meat is not bad - unless you eat nothing but meat. Veggies are healthy - but become unhealthy when you eat nothing but veggies. And so on. It's all about the right balance. Don't demonize a certain food group.

However, I love Ellen.
lafrijole 15th-Apr-2010 01:09 pm (UTC)
I believe it's a statistical fact [I heard it on TV so it must be true, y/y?] that healthy vegetarians are always healthier than healthy meat eaters.
tyffi 15th-Apr-2010 01:32 pm (UTC)
Oh, if it was on telly is HAS to be true. ;D
gjee 15th-Apr-2010 01:27 pm (UTC)
i think its bc cows are injected with a lot of crap and even the meat cutting process like hamburger meat has a lot of crap in it thats NOT meat. lots of fat and cartilage. and since it can raise your cholesterol. even fish have toxins in them.

BUT i don't see how people can live without meat! i love a good burger. lol and a steak. and BACON. and ribs. and fried chicken. lol

anyways i went vegan for a month and holy crap was it different. you really do have more energy.
musicnextdoor 15th-Apr-2010 02:31 pm (UTC)
Rice is not a vegetable. Beans are not vegetables. She did not say she eats only veggies.
_underwhelmed 15th-Apr-2010 07:29 pm (UTC)
no meat is generally pretty bad for you. less so if you're eating chemical free, well raised meat but the vast, vast majority of the north american population isn't.
lulufairybubble 15th-Apr-2010 11:14 pm (UTC)
Vegetarian or vegan diet is not unhealthy if you take the time out to get all the nutrients you need.

I'm a clean eating vegan and I get all the nutrients I need. It's easy for me b/c I did my research and didn't just jump into something I didn't understand.
laughing_wild 15th-Apr-2010 11:25 am (UTC)
I spent four months on a super restricted diet like that and found absolutely NO change in my energy levels. The only thing different was how damn bitchy I was because I couldn't have any chocolate.
yackyackyack 15th-Apr-2010 03:22 pm (UTC)
Eh, the term diet in general means bad things....if you restrict yourself in the extreme, you are doomed to fail because you give up everything you like. Someone who makes healthy eating a way of life can eat the occasional chocolate cake and it doesn't hurt because in general they are eating well so a little 'cheat' once in awhile isn't going to kill them.
firecracker_sj 15th-Apr-2010 11:33 am (UTC)
That picture is terrifying. It's like she is about to crawl out of my screen and strangle me.
munkeycheeze 15th-Apr-2010 11:35 am (UTC)
She's saying "I'mmmm gonna GETCHA! I'mmm gonna GETCHA!"
lafrijole 15th-Apr-2010 01:09 pm (UTC)
I can SO hear her saying that! lol
_angelbeauty 15th-Apr-2010 11:41 am (UTC)
cutting "junk food" entirely doesn't work for me. I dont have the will power. at some point i'd break down and binge on chips or sweets. what i do is serve myself smaller portions and replace certain things. like a chicken salad instead of burger. or an apple instead of cake. and water instead of soft drinks. then on weekends I treat myself to brownies or pizza. i think its about self control and not overeating rather than cutting out an entire food group.
emerging 15th-Apr-2010 01:42 pm (UTC)
Yup ! I think the key is to not deprive yourself of guilty pleasures, just have self control.

I went from a size 10 to a 4 under that mantra.
dref22 15th-Apr-2010 11:43 am (UTC)
No meats, diary, and sugar? That's horrible.
burningmarl 15th-Apr-2010 01:00 pm (UTC)
I worked at a vegan festival last summer and I had SO much energy. I was doing a lot of physical work, digging trenches for sound cables, moving chairs, building stuff and I was eating quinoa and nuts and lots of amazing stuff and I was just bouncing around!
yackyackyack 15th-Apr-2010 03:24 pm (UTC)
LOL there must be something in quinoa, I've been eating it lately combined with veggies and I'm bouncing everywhere!
lafrijole 15th-Apr-2010 01:10 pm (UTC)
i bet you barely poop, too. that's so awesome. =D
secondanchor 15th-Apr-2010 11:48 am (UTC)
I could never do that. I need my junk food
viva_espanyol 15th-Apr-2010 12:11 pm (UTC)
lol i just came in to say that she really annoys me on american idol.
