SALEM: not IAMAMI, talk to SOLDOUT, hated by SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST

Ever since the IAMAMIWHOAMIIDONTKNOWOMFGAMIXTINA stuff started, people have been thinking and talking more about SALEM--3 kids, Jack John Heather, from Chicago, who make menacing, dark, dirty, haunting music. Like cough syrup chopped and screwed that got killed in a woodshed. That's why you should care. Also, everyone who has the internet has heard this band and has no idea what to think.

SALEM don't really do interviews, but when they were in Austin, TX for the annual South By Southwest music festival, soldout got them to sit the effe down for a video interview, where they talk about not being goth, how they hate Lil Wayne (ONTD LISTEN UP! THEY AIN'T GONNA FREE WEEZY), and how Gaga makes "that popular song that's popular". That interview, plus some SALEM hate from Fader,

SALEM video interview...the ONLY video interview with them in existence...for soldoutmusic.com

Apparently everyone and their momses hated SALEM's SXSW performances, even the FADER who BOOKED THEM. Cue Fader editor Matt Schnipper:

"...But Salem’s music is slow. If juke is an influence, its mostly ambient, though they do have a strong interest in choppy electronic drum rolls. Salem’s songs are mostly too blunted to dance to, too stuttered. It’s like they listened to the Neptunes’ glossiest songs and then shredded them, stealing tiny parts and cribbing together a much darker puzzle. The bass may have bark like in hip-hop, the vocals may sometimes be rap, the hi-hats may glisten, but Salem sit in the dark distinctly outside the realm of pop music. Calling them pop is like saying a dog should pay real estate taxes because he lives in the house....I did get to see Salem play once during SXSW, at our space. They were booed off stage. That is, because, unfortunately, honestly, they were not good..."
