Confirmed: Katherine Heigl Leaving "Grey's Anatomy"


Katherine Heigl confirms in this week’s exclusive Entertainment Weekly cover story that she is leaving Grey’s Anatomy.

“I am done,” declares Heigl. “We just finalized our agreement. Everyone had been working really hard to find an amicable and gracious way of letting go and moving on. It’s sad but it’s what I wanted.”

The 31-year-old actress reveals that it was family issues, not her burgeoning film career, that prompted her to approach series creator Shonda Rhimes and ask to be let out of her contract 18 months early. “I started a family and it changed everything for me,” says Heigl, who took a three-month family leave from Grey’s this season to bond with her newly-adopted daughter, Naleigh. “It changed my desire to work full-time.”

Although she was scheduled to appear in this season’s final five episodes, that is no longer happening. As a result, the Jan. 21 episode was her last as Izzie. “I know I’m disappointing the fans,” she says. “I just had to make a choice. I hope I made the right one.”

I'm glad she is getting what she wants. Starting a family is a perfect reason! I will miss Izzie, but only sort of. I think her character as written by the writers started to annoy me...maybe on purpose???

Is that what happened? I really never followed any of the drama outside the show. I figured it would ruin it for me (although, the writers did that anyway...) I watch it like I watch Lost- I just want to see how the end it. LOL!

No he was fired for making derogatory comments about TR Knight. He went the whole mea culpa route (filming a public commercial for GLADD etc) but Katie put so much pressure on the studio by continuing bringing up that flap that they canned him.

You probably work less hours in total on a movie set than on a tv show and can be slightly more flexible with your time.

This. Especially since tv sets are usually pretty kid-friendly. The hours are long, but there is lots of downtime where a mom/dad can hang with the kids.

Especially with a cast the size of GA. Its not like she's the main character. She's not in even close to every scene. She doesn't have to travel to be on location or to do promotion. And the writers have been writing Ellen Pompeo very light this season so that she could spend more time with her daughter. Heigl has five movies listed on IMDB. This family thing completely looks like an excuse to not come off looking like a bitch for the way she's leaving.

I work in the film industry and believe me, the hours are brutal and for about 10 months a year it's like that. I work in a film production office now but back in the day I used to do production assistance for a few years and I honestly can't recall a single thing happening during those years aside from working on sets. Like "Oh 2003? That was the year when Halle Berry threw a fit on set! My birthday in 2005? Hmm wasn't that the day when Famke Janssen screamed cause she saw a bug in that Capilano forest?" but those were just movies. I was only tied to one TV show for longer than a week and it was Tru Calling and the hours were about 16 hours a day, monday - saturday, 10 months a year. Good pay, TERRIBLE hours. These actors may have amazing, privileged lives but they work insane hours to have that. Especially on TV shows. At least a movie is like brutal hours for 2-3 months and then you're done and you can take a break.
