Helen Mirren regrets tattoo

Helen Mirren has reportedly expressed regret over having a tattoo inked on her wrist as a young woman.

Speaking to ABC's Good Morning America, she joked that she was "very, very drunk" when she had the design etched on her hand.

"It was a very, very long time ago, when only sailors and Hell's Angels were tattooed, honestly, and prisoners and I decided to get a tattoo because it was the most shocking thing I could think of doing," she explained.

"And now I'm utterly disgusted and shocked because it's become completely mainstream, which is unacceptable to me."

Mirren recently laughed off rumors that she is planning to launch a sex book, insisting that they stemmed from an "offhand comment" that was taken out of context.

Mirren's new movie The Last Station, co-starring Christopher Plummer, is in US cinemas now and will be released in the UK next month.

What about you ONTD? Any tattoo regrets? I know I still love mine but one of my cousin's friends got so trashed he woke up with Cap'N Crunch on his back so I'm sure you've got some stories of your own.

I think she's mostly kidding here.

In b4 rape wank.

I think she might be as well. Although it's a little hard to tell in print, I didn't see the actual interview.
[info]iruleuruniverse 21st-Jan-2010 08:57 pm (UTC)
She is. I watched the interview on TV and she was joking about it!

[info]omg_its_drj 21st-Jan-2010 07:45 pm (UTC)
wait..let me get this straight

she got a tattoo because back then it was cool and indie
but now she regrets the tattoo cos tattoos are mainstream and are no longer cool and indie?

lol...yah I thought "what the hell" when I read that. Anyone who gets a tattoo for the "cool" factor should be slapped anyway.
[info]joanshearer Yup..21st-Jan-2010 09:34 pm (UTC)
and I DON'T think she's kidding either. LOL many people regret tats as they age.
[info]callarose 22nd-Jan-2010 10:27 am (UTC)
Yeah, I didn't understand it much either.
[info]antpantsss 21st-Jan-2010 07:45 pm (UTC)
I don't think I'd ever get a tat

ia actually.

who is the hot bitch in your icon???

It's actually more shocking and independent to NOT get a tattoo these days, from what I can tell. I just spent a week in Queensland and I swear to God I was the only woman I saw who didn't have one. And let me tell you, these things don't look pretty after you bang out a couple of kids.

[info]nighttones 21st-Jan-2010 07:46 pm (UTC)
I got one. Not drunk, but I basically regretted it the next day. Even though I had thought about it for about a year before I did it.
[info]luminaire 21st-Jan-2010 07:58 pm (UTC)
Do you mind if I ask why you regretted it? I've been debating getting my first tattoo for a long time and the reason I've held off is because, yeah, I don't want to regret it.
[info]mrsreucassel 21st-Jan-2010 10:20 pm (UTC)
I like to be the voice of reason in cases like this:

1. Do you have exceptional genetics and intend to age well?
2. Do you plan to invest time and money every few years to have your ink recolored and cleaned up?
3. Do you plan to never have kids?
4. Do you plan on drinking lots of water and maintaining a good skin care regime, not just on your face, but wherever a tattoo might be?

If you answered yes to all of the above, I say go for it! I love the look of tattoos. Old, neglected, stretchmarked, blurred tattoos not so much.

If tattoos could maintain their 'just-inked' appearance for a lifetime, you best believe I'd have 80 of them.

Oh, not at all. Basically, one, I didn't really assert myself with the tattoo artist. I told him what I wanted, but I was really nervous, so when he suggested something else, I just went with it. So instead of my tattoo being on the top part of my butt, it's now on the lower part of my back. Basically a tramp stamp and much harder to find. Also, it's much bigger than I want, because essentially, I didn't even think about asking to make it smaller.
Also, I had been thinking about what I wanted for months. I got "Ipsa Scientia Postestas Est", which means "knowledge itself is power" in latin. I like it a lot, but did I need it on my body. Probably not.

i feel like it doesnt matter how long you wait to get a tattoo, if you want a tattoo you will always regret not getting it, and i think it's worth taking that risk, even if you don't really like it forever, at least it's a story!

idk i have 3 tattoos, and even thought i'm not in love with them like i was the first few years i had them, i still like them, and they are in fairly discrete places (my inner lip, bottom of foot and top of foot), so just incase i start hating them i don't have to look at them that much!
[info]voyevoda 21st-Jan-2010 07:46 pm (UTC)
ILH work but get over it, Helen. :P
[info]voyevoda 21st-Jan-2010 07:48 pm (UTC)
Also if my industry allowed it I would be ROCKING two sleeves. Alas...
[info]hannahbrun 21st-Jan-2010 07:47 pm (UTC)
my mom was heavily modified, so i treat tattoos and piercings with casual disregard.
i don't think they belong on faces, hands or necks, though. not until you've chosen and established a career where you know they won't bite you.

[info]newnewsfriend 21st-Jan-2010 08:55 pm (UTC)
I was about to lol at this but then I thought about how much it must've hurt to get tattoos on your NECK I was like "O__O".
[info]hannahbrun 22nd-Jan-2010 01:04 am (UTC)
mm, yes, a fine case of tattoos and piercings coming back to bite you.
also a fine case of puking in my mouth boolaaaaaarghhhhhh
[info]sparta 21st-Jan-2010 07:47 pm (UTC)
I don't have any regrets for any of the ink I have. I'm not covered in it, all except for one is hidden under clothing. Although, I am considering a half sleeve, or something large on my back. My perception of it is, you have one body, just one, so I'm going to enjoy it and I don't give a shit what I'll look like at 85 with tattoos...that's even IF I live that long.

I prefer tattoos to piercings.
[info]suicidal_driver 21st-Jan-2010 08:04 pm (UTC)
IA with you. I've had that kind of conversation with people alot in the last 2 weeks.
[info]davetvs 21st-Jan-2010 08:20 pm (UTC)
is that rihanna jw
[info]maddiemoo 21st-Jan-2010 09:01 pm (UTC)
It's funny, I don't think I'd ever get a tattoo, but for exactly the same reason: you only get one body, so I don't want to risk getting one that I may regret later, knowing that it's there for life. Different strokes! :)
[info]witherxaway 22nd-Jan-2010 03:06 am (UTC)
THIS. Life is short and if I hate my tattoos when I get older (aka sagging).. well at least I have a story to tell and I'll look a little more interesting ;)
[info]queefing 21st-Jan-2010 07:47 pm (UTC)
dont make decisions based on what others think then
[info]room_8 21st-Jan-2010 07:47 pm (UTC)
i have 2 tattoos. one i adore and can't ever see myself regretting, the other one i actually do wish i never had it done.
[info]tsurah 21st-Jan-2010 07:59 pm (UTC)

[info]roxiful 22nd-Jan-2010 04:07 am (UTC)
Wow, me too.
[info]princess_peapod 22nd-Jan-2010 09:36 am (UTC)
Yeah me too. Luckily the one I don't like is on my back so I never have to see it haha.
[info]_findlay 21st-Jan-2010 07:48 pm (UTC)
I love both of my tattoos, but my brother has some awful ones. It was my birthday on Saturday and I made him entertain my friends by showing them off, hahaha. He has "Scottish Angel" misspelled as "Scotish Angel" on his arm and IT IS AWESOME.
[info]eaudepeony 21st-Jan-2010 07:51 pm (UTC)
omg that's horrible lol...is there no space to squeeze in the missing T?
[info]arial 21st-Jan-2010 07:55 pm (UTC)
my cousin has some absolutely ridiculous ones. he has a large cross on his arm with the words 'the lord is my shepherd' around it, which wouldn't be so bad except shepherd is spelled shepperd.
[info]pennyxlane 21st-Jan-2010 08:14 pm (UTC)
LOL love it
[info]lisaee 21st-Jan-2010 07:48 pm (UTC)
I just about talked a friend out of getting a massive tattoo of a forest scene across her chest, noting that she would look like a Eurocamp advert whenever she took her top off.

But I think she was more put off by someone else telling her she'd look like a hipster.
[info]drinkingstars 21st-Jan-2010 08:09 pm (UTC)
I don't like chest tattoos on women. Is that sexist of me or something? I think we have enough going on up front not to need ink there lol.
[info]milly 22nd-Jan-2010 12:45 am (UTC)
I kind of find them a bit crass.
[info]witherxaway 22nd-Jan-2010 03:07 am (UTC)
I don't either.. except I kinda have one. Does that make sense?
[info]swimmingotter 21st-Jan-2010 07:48 pm (UTC)
I love my tattoos, don't regret them, and would totally do it again if I had to. :)

Also, where do you find your music, because that sounds awesome.
[info]vehiclesshockme 21st-Jan-2010 07:56 pm (UTC)
That was actually ripped from some Bravo special where they had actors and pop stars singing some musical numbers. I don't remember where I found it originally but it's pretty old.

[info]ledasdaughter 21st-Jan-2010 08:38 pm (UTC)
I adore Adam
[info]iamshal 21st-Jan-2010 07:48 pm (UTC)
I only have one tattoo so far & it's not something I took lightly. It was something that I wanted & didn't get it until almost two years of wanting it. I also put it somewhere that I can hide it when I need to be professional. I would never get a tattoo that would be a last minute idea, because that's how people end up regretting it.
[info]twilight_la_fae 21st-Jan-2010 08:27 pm (UTC)
mte. I thought about my tattoo for years- a Brian Froud fae- before I got it on my ankle. I'm starting to consider adding to it, but I'll think about it/ plan it/ sketch around for a few months before I actually commit to it.

My friend has terrible ink- her artist freehanded a design that was supposed to be a few inches, and tripled it in size. She's one of those ADD tattoo people- she sees something she likes, she thinks about getting it, then forgets it when she doesn't have money. It bothers the hell out of me, since I take so much time considering mine. :/
[info]jackiesue 21st-Jan-2010 08:47 pm (UTC)
Ditto. I love mine, have never regretted it. It took me a full year to decide on it. I want another one now and again, it's something I've considered for almost three years.
