i took a caribbean lit class about 2 years ago, and the professor made a similar point about the caribbean islands. there are a lot of destitute areas and political unrest, but the resorts are always glorified so it sounds like the islands are a great place to go on vacation. true, tourism is a big part of the economy, but going to resorts are like going to a fantasy land where you can escape from all the poverty and such.
