The Golden Girls Take on Gay Marriage

Could there be a more gay-friendly show with an entirely straight cast than The Golden Girls? A favorite of the LGBT crowd, not to mention those with weekend hangovers that love the ten-hour marathons on the Hallmark channel, The Golden Girls is proving relevant once again, if not for a 60-second lesson on the issue of marriage equality.

It's pretty funny thinking that a show from the 1980s could have been so far ahead of its time that it took on the issue of gay marriage, almost two decades before it became a reality (and at that, only in a few states). But Blanche, Sofia, Dorothy and Rose hit the gay rights issues pretty hard. Which might be why the show created a generation of homosexuals, at least according to some witty folks.

Here's the Girls' take on marriage equality. Blanche (Rue McClanahan) has a gay brother who wants to get married, and she can't understand why. She can accept him being gay, but why does he have to (in the immortal words of Beyonce) "put a ring on it."

Enter Sofia (Estelle Getty), the television grandmother to end all television grandmothers. She asks Blanche why straight folks get married, and she answers that it's because they love each other, and want to make a lifetime commitment to each other.

"That's what [gay couples] want too. Everyone wants someone to grow old with, and shouldn't everyone have that chance?" Sofia asks.

Ah, retro heartwarming. Check out the clip below

Bea Arthur has always been a step ahead. The Maude abortion episode anyone?
[info]dissention_1 7th-Jan-2010 08:07 pm (UTC)
my favorite episode of maude is when she goes to the shrink. a single 25 minute monologue from bea arthur, it's fucking brilliant. they'd never get away with that now.

No one has a scintilla talent these days. I gave up on Hollywood post 2000.

To bad you haven't been able to find it. I think I'm going to have to keep a look out for it, since that sounds really amazing.

Love Golden Girls... but isn't this from 20 years ago? Have we gone back in time?

I never really understood Blanches problem with Gays when in the pilot she had a gay cook and seemed so comfortable with them.

Rose, Sophia and Dorothy were portrayed as very pro-gay.
[info]gaypornstash 7th-Jan-2010 07:58 pm (UTC)
I know many people who are only somewhat comfortable with gays. If it's someone else, fine, but if it's someone you actually care about then it becomes a problem. I've also seen it the other way around.

i find it very hard to be friends with people who are anti-gay. my mom says she loves gay people, but she joined an anti-gay marriage protest outside a mormon church in LA. i'd never been so furious with her and i asked her how she could tell my best friend (to whom she gives the praises of the gods) that he doesn't deserve to spend his life with the man he loves. she didn't have an answer.

My gfs sister. She thought I was great, until she started to suspect her sister and I were dating.
[info]la_geni 7th-Jan-2010 08:20 pm (UTC)
Yeah. Some woman in my psych. class has a BEST FRIEND that is gay but she wants him nowhere near her kid. I'm like "that doesn't make any fucking sense."
[info]venus_orbiting 8th-Jan-2010 03:07 am (UTC)
My best friend's mother is exactly like that. Wonderful woman, pro-gay, all about equal rights, and then her son (my friend) came out and she got uncomfortable. Nothing drastic; she still loves him, no disowning or anything, but... she's a bit uncomfortable. It's hard for me to understand.

SHE'S FROM THE SOUTH
[info]entelodont 7th-Jan-2010 08:29 pm (UTC)
There are lots of people, especially straight women, who think gays are adorable little accessories but freak out when they assert any sign of sexual desire or discomfort with the status quo.
[info]bob80 7th-Jan-2010 09:02 pm (UTC)
I just think with many people it is difficult to learn and then accept someone close to you is gay. It takes time.
[info]tube_fiend 7th-Jan-2010 09:10 pm (UTC)
As the hyper-sexual one of the bunch, Blanche was always confused by those who didn't conform to her ideas of sexuality. She thought sex was great. She didn't understand those who didn't, and she definitely didn't understand men who didn't want to be having sex with a woman like her.

God I love this show. My bf calls me an old woman whenever I watch it, but it's seriously the best thing ever. Me, a bag of chips and a marathon on the WE channel.....heaven.

Fierce bitches are fierce.
[info]endingonfire 7th-Jan-2010 07:57 pm (UTC)
I think it's sad that 20 year old shows are more progressive than the ones on today.
[info]velvetunicorn 7th-Jan-2010 08:08 pm (UTC)
seriously.

[info]kleinerbar 7th-Jan-2010 09:03 pm (UTC)
It's crazy isn't it? And where did all the minorities go?? We've gone backward for sure.
[info]watermeloncholy 7th-Jan-2010 11:35 pm (UTC)
The 60s-90s was great for minorities but now that we have a black president, since we've obviously progressed so much we no longer need to explore issues of race, gender, and sexuality.

*rolleyes* Every time I hear/read that nonsense, it makes me want to hit something.
[info]bob80 7th-Jan-2010 09:04 pm (UTC)
Seriously. I watch some shows from the 70s and 80s and I'm in shock by how much more progressive they were.
[info]disasteral_boys 7th-Jan-2010 11:05 pm (UTC)
IA, we've gone completely backwards somehow. Maybe this decade, things will change (silly optimism probably).
[info]numbedtoe 7th-Jan-2010 11:26 pm (UTC)
It really is. So few shows now have strong female characters, tackle tough subjects but with humor and I can't really think of a single show on now that isn't hung up on looks. Back then you could be a chubby girl and hook up. Or have looks that were less than a cookie cutter mold and they were portrayed as smart, fierce, with decent sex lives.

I find it so sad that we're in the era of characters with stupid intelligence, and reality TV.
[info]laurie_springs 8th-Jan-2010 12:24 am (UTC)
Well, we can thank the massive turnaround we took when Bush came into office for that.
