Australian model/tv personality Jennifer Hawkins (Miss Universe 2004) has appeared on the cover of Marie Claire (Australia, February 2010) naked and un-retouched to encourage positive attitudes to body image and support the Butterfly Foundation.
A foundation that helps women combat eating disorders has defended a naked, untouched magazine photo of supermodel Jennifer Hawkins, saying it promotes awareness of positive body image.
The 26-year-old wears only make-up on the cover of the February issue of Marie Claire, which supports the Butterfly Foundation. The organisation provides help to Australians suffering from eating disorders and negative body image issues and their carers.
Foundation general manager Julie Parker, speaking on Radio 3AW today, said the photo, which apparently shows 'flaws' including a slightly dimpled thigh and a tiny crease on her waist, was intended to get the discussion on body image rolling.
"What we're talking about here is just one small part of the much wider spectrum of body image, self esteem and eating disorder issues and that small part is actually about digital enhancement and retouching of images", Ms Parker said.
"It's so excessive in magazines these days and young girls and women are constantly telling us that they don't even know what they're looking at any more, and what they want to see is more real, untouched and natural photos of celebrities and people in magazines, and I think this delivers that".
In the magazine, which hits the stands this Wednesday, Hawkins says:"I'm not a stick figure - I thought it would be great to tell women to just be themselves and be confident."
When asked why the foundation did not put forward a more average Australian woman, Ms Parker said magazines had tried that tactic in the past, to no avail.
"The thing is unfortunately it doesn't make the same point, because Jennifer sells magazines and she creates awareness. If Marie Claire had chosen to put on their cover an ordinary women, say myself or a friend of yours, it would not have created the awareness it does".
Ms Parker said she hoped the shoot would help push magazines into including more natural images.
Wank will no doubt continue. Personally I think she looks great, but it doesn't help females who already have body image issues (ie most).

I would love it if they had given the image to a bunch of photoretouchers with instructions to retouch and shown what the results were compared to her REAL body.
Get Jamie Lee Curtis again and I'll show this idea some respect.
