The Silent Lily Allen

Once one of the music world's most prolific bloggers, the singer recently declared her conversion to become a "neo-Luddite".

She explained: "I just had this revelation that Facebook, blogging, all those things were becoming a total addiction. I'd be with my boyfriend or my mum and they'd have just got half of me.

"So I put my BlackBerry, my laptop, my iPod in a box and that's the end. I won't use email, I play records on vinyl, I don't blog. I've got more time, more privacy. We've ended up in this world of unreal communications and I don't want that. I want real life back."

In an interview with Grazia magazine, the 24-year old also said she had managed to overcome a reliance on alcohol. "When I started out, I'd drink four cans of cider on stage because I needed the confidence not to be judged. But getting off my head got me into trouble - I didn't understand why I couldn't be like Liam Gallagher just because I was a girl. Now I'm happy being more of a lady," she said.

She added that she is happier with her body image. "I'm just over the whole body thing. I honestly don't care any more. I'll never be teeny tiny like Cheryl Cole or Dannii Minogue, but I've stopped comparing myself. Put my next to the average British woman and I'm fine... I've still got a big bum and thighs, but they're the parts of my body my boyfriend is always gravving. I've lost that obsession and paranoia, thank God."

probably a good thing that she is quieter.

i feel the same way too sometimes, but no way in hell i am giving up email!

i love my fb.
manaconda 22nd-Dec-2009 04:49 pm (UTC)
I feel the same way. I deactivated my facebook when I realized, I don't care what any of these people are doing and I'm wasting my time.

... but then I started commenting on ontd again, so I guess I fell off the wagon.
ree7aan 22nd-Dec-2009 04:56 pm (UTC)
i don't understand facebook addiction. i still have mine but i haven't been on it for months. the one thing that annoys me the most is that everytime i go on it, it has changed completely, so i end up leaving out of confusion.
ontd is the lesser of evils though, so don't feel bad.
manaconda 22nd-Dec-2009 05:07 pm (UTC)
eh, neither can I. it was kind of like a compulsion, but then I'd see everyone obsessively check their wallposts in lecture or on their phones, and I realized 'oh shit, I am better than them, but not by enough.'

plus, I just find it so self-indulgent. Like, they honestly expect people to care about their drama updates.

I guess so! at least people from high school don't bug me here.

nomoneyfun 22nd-Dec-2009 05:14 pm (UTC)
co-sign on the facebook addiction. it's so whack.
kitkats_lj 22nd-Dec-2009 05:01 pm (UTC)

demonsandsongs 22nd-Dec-2009 05:01 pm (UTC)
I guess having a cd player was too much of a technological advance.
egrossnickle 22nd-Dec-2009 05:06 pm (UTC)
Perhaps since she has renounced her laptop and iPod? Viva analogue!
prettykitty90 22nd-Dec-2009 04:50 pm (UTC)
wtf is "gravving"
jainypoo 22nd-Dec-2009 04:50 pm (UTC)
maybe it should be grabbing? the 'b' and 'v' are right next to each other. i thought that was weird, too.
it_llbeyourname 22nd-Dec-2009 04:52 pm (UTC)
i think it's a typo but it sounds like her bf always makes gravy out of those parts or something. very chickenlike
prettykitty90 22nd-Dec-2009 04:54 pm (UTC)
lmao
jainypoo 22nd-Dec-2009 04:50 pm (UTC)
I dont have a mobile phone and everyone thinks Im weird haha.
manaconda 22nd-Dec-2009 04:52 pm (UTC)
neither does my english prof. I wish I could give mine up, but after messing up my car and realizing I forgot my phone, I am attached to that thing.
daddyissues 22nd-Dec-2009 04:58 pm (UTC)

but then again, my internet addiction sortof take its place.
normajeane 22nd-Dec-2009 06:08 pm (UTC)
I was just thinking that I actually don't need mine. I don't call anybody and nobody calls me. I am lame. :(
evilfuckinbitch 22nd-Dec-2009 08:49 pm (UTC)
aw *hugs*
hoot 22nd-Dec-2009 06:22 pm (UTC)
I only have one because I use it as my house phone, but I don't get the attachment people have to their phones. Maybe it's because I have a cheap Motorola and not a cool phone, but w/e.
oceanhue 22nd-Dec-2009 07:29 pm (UTC)
neither do i, but i hate talking on the phone
evilfuckinbitch 22nd-Dec-2009 08:48 pm (UTC)
I'm 26 and just recently got one. only because my roommates both have one and it didn't make sense for me to get a housephone for one person when a cell was much more practical. I don't use it very much though lol

people text me and I am like a caveman mashing buttons, taking 5 minutes to type a sentence back
jessyryan 22nd-Dec-2009 11:13 pm (UTC)
I don't either but it's only because I'm completely broke. I do think it's a blessing in disguise though.
moodring54 23rd-Dec-2009 11:46 am (UTC)
I don't use mine much, but they are a freaking lifesaver sometimes.
yumi_maki 23rd-Dec-2009 12:19 pm (UTC)
I don't have one right now and it's bothering me. I just miss the convenience, that's all, plus I don't know most people's numbers offhand so even if I do want to call someone, I usually have to call someone else to get their number first before I can do it.
manaconda 22nd-Dec-2009 04:50 pm (UTC)
wait--um, what do ipods have to do with privacy?
idreaminargyle 22nd-Dec-2009 05:28 pm (UTC)
It's how the Man keeps track of you.

it_llbeyourname 22nd-Dec-2009 04:59 pm (UTC)
admittedly vinyl is better but it doesn't make her a better person
zharia 22nd-Dec-2009 04:58 pm (UTC)
What the fuck is wrong with listening to vinyl?
zelide 22nd-Dec-2009 05:01 pm (UTC)
ikr, vinyl is nice and all but i wouldn't equate listening to digital music files to being addicted to whoring yourself out on the interwebs.
nomoneyfun 22nd-Dec-2009 05:15 pm (UTC)
LMFAO. *dead*
neversquare 22nd-Dec-2009 05:33 pm (UTC)

velvet_sn0w 22nd-Dec-2009 04:52 pm (UTC)
I thought she was going to take a jab at Cheryl and Dannii but she didn't...not really.

I'm glad she's shutting up but girl will never be a 'lady'
wakeupem 22nd-Dec-2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
You don't have to pack away your Blackberry, Lily. Just put it in you fucking purse when you are with people. Not that hard. Us normal folk do it.
nowakingeye 22nd-Dec-2009 05:01 pm (UTC)
ikr. i do have friends who have no self control though and will NOT put away their fucking phones when we are hanging out. :/
wakeupem 22nd-Dec-2009 05:08 pm (UTC)
It annoys me so bad. The world is not going to end just because you don't text for an hour or two.
___heyvanity 22nd-Dec-2009 05:16 pm (UTC)
There's nothing more frustrating than trying to have a conversation with someone texting non-stop on their phone. One minute they make eye contact and the next they're just like looking down at their phone saying"mmm" "mmhmmm" "yeahhhh." Needless to say, I'm not good friends with the person who used to do this to me all the time but god it annoyed the piss out of me!

And then there's the girl who is on her phone CONSTANTLY when she's at parties. It's like, why be at a party? Just go home and talk on the phone.

polaroidmoment 22nd-Dec-2009 07:36 pm (UTC)
ugh it seriously makes me want to punch someone when that happens. I have a bb too but I turn it off/on silent during meals. If I answer it while hanging out with people, I make sure it's quick and I ignore texts that are pointless. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS SO HARD.

This girl I used to work with and now occasionally run into at community events/council meetings and such is literally on her blackberry the entire time, texting or on facebook or something. Not only is it really annoying, it's really disrespectful to the people you're with or supposed to be paying attention to.
supperdune 22nd-Dec-2009 09:18 pm (UTC)
the other day I sat next to a woman on an airplane who COULD NOT put away her phone and, I kid you not, sent a text even right after we had taken off. I was staring at her in horror but I don't think she noticed :|
syphilisparade 22nd-Dec-2009 05:13 pm (UTC)
srsly. and putting away her ipod wtf. as long as you take your earphones out when having a conversation idgaf.
nomoneyfun 22nd-Dec-2009 05:16 pm (UTC)
i mean, i guess it's easier said than done for some people but it's called BALANCE. if it takes her giving everything up though, so be it.
