Week Record Sales

I Am Me as she is she...and we are all together. Nope, she sure ain’t the Walrus, but Geffen’s Ashlee Simpson is no longer just Jessica Simpson’s little sister, as she scores the #1 spot on this week’s chart, selling 227k of her sophomore release. If this success proves anything, it’s that the average consumer ultimately doesn’t care about last year’s Saturday Night Live lip-synching “scandal.”

But Simpson is only one of six debuts in this week’s Top 10: Rod Stewart (J Records/RMG) comes in #2, selling 187k of his fourth American Songbook title; the lovely Martina McBride (RCA Nashville) never promised us a rose garden, but she’s still #3, selling 173k of her collection of authentic country classics covers (so authentic, in fact, that Buck Owens did some liner notes); Rap-A-Lot/Asylum’s Bun B (we could have some nasty fun with that name...but we’re feeling nice today) comes in #5, with 118k; Motown/Universal’s Stevie Wonder is #6, with 113k; and Reprise’s Depeche Mode returns at #7, with 104k.

“No sophomore jinx for Ashlee Simpson who had a great first week with us,” says Virgin Entertainment Group’s Jerry Suarez. “She’s a bona fide star and the SNL appearance before the release date didn’t hurt. But the week had so many hot debuts with Depeche Mode, Rod Stewart and Bun B—and I’m guessing that Martina McBride had a huge week at the racks.”

Rounding out the rest of the Top 10 are stalwarts Nickelback (Roadrunner/IDJ) who drop two spots to #4, with 129k; A&M/Interscope’s Black Eyed Peas drop four spots to #8, with 92k; J Records/RMG’s Alicia Keys drops eight spots to #9, with 79k; and Roc-A-Fella/IDJ’s Kanye West drops five spots to #10, with 74k (but he’s probably stll pleased as punch about the scandals surrounding the White House this week...).

Other notable debuts: Mercury Nashville’s Billy Currington at #11, with 52k; Island/IDJ’s Thrice at #15, with 48k; Columbia/CRG’s Chris Botti at #21, with 39k; MCA Nashville’s Tracy Lawrence at #37, with 29k of a new compilation; and Bad Boy/Atlantic’s Black Rob (no relation to Black Bart) at #39, with 29k.

Watch for debuts next week from Aerosmith, Destiny’s Child, NSYNC, Joe Nichols and Bette Midler covering Peggy Lee.

[info]kristinchaos 26th-Oct-2005 04:39 am (UTC)
that should be & not @
Clearly, I'm excited.
[info]squares 26th-Oct-2005 04:44 am (UTC)
I think it has a lot to do with saturation. Bun B has been on a bunch of albums and bunch of remixes. Good for Bun.
[info]angeleyes8410 26th-Oct-2005 04:40 am (UTC)
WOW!! I thought Destiny's Chile was broken up and NSync was LONG gone and never returning and I had no idea about Aerosmith but I'm excited.
[info]lzybrunette 26th-Oct-2005 04:55 am (UTC)

That sucks! Last year she sold a million on her first week! She lost more then half of her fan base
[info]girlcanrock_ 26th-Oct-2005 04:48 am (UTC)
but she didnt have her reality show
[info]holly_megan 26th-Oct-2005 04:49 am (UTC)
she lost half her fan base because she lost half her talent.

oh wait...
[info]sopardonme 26th-Oct-2005 05:01 am (UTC)
i believe it was one million shipped, not sold
[info]love_technician Oooooh!26th-Oct-2005 05:35 am (UTC)
Thanks for pointing this out; a reason to take heart!
[info]specialpeeps 26th-Oct-2005 06:21 pm (UTC)
she sold 398,000. get it right.
[info]theonlykimcohen 26th-Oct-2005 06:34 pm (UTC)
and who told you that?
[info]mementox 26th-Oct-2005 04:53 am (UTC)
I bought her new CD because her last one was actually decent (in my opinion).. but this one SUCKS ASS.
[info]theonlykimcohen 26th-Oct-2005 04:56 am (UTC)
Ya, thats how I felt when I first got "I AM ME" but I think its one of those album that you need to listen to a few times to like because after hearing it like a 100 times at the Virgin Megastore for 3 hours, I really like it.
Its just weird though cause a few songs are soooo Britney Spears, its weird! Like L.O.V.E. cute song but its just so weird to think that Ashlee Simpson is singing it! You know what I mean....
[info]mementox 26th-Oct-2005 04:58 am (UTC)
Yeah... maybe I just have to listen to it more. I dunno if I can EVER like "L.O.V.E." though... heh
[info]love_technician 26th-Oct-2005 05:37 am (UTC)
I've had the songs for a couple of weeks, and, with the exception of "Boyfriend" and "L.O.V.E", none of them stand out.
[info]love_technician 26th-Oct-2005 05:36 am (UTC)
Totally agree, the first one was a lot better. This one has, literally, two decent songs.
[info]narcissisystem 26th-Oct-2005 04:57 am (UTC)
Holy shit! I applaud Ashlee. I actually do.
[info]solookup 26th-Oct-2005 04:58 am (UTC)
Who the hell is buying her CD? Fess up guys.
[info]pinkdlite 26th-Oct-2005 05:10 am (UTC)
Hahaha. You know half of this damn community is. Sheesh. You should be ashamed of yourselves!!!
[info]ladybella 26th-Oct-2005 05:29 am (UTC)
CLOUTIERRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!
