Good news for fellow Dollhouse fans...

Premiere week DVR results: 'Dollhouse,' 'Smallville' top gain list

Premiere week DVR data is here and the results show that Fox's "Dollhouse" gained a higher percentage of additional viewers than nearly any other show.

The "Dollhouse" premiere rating jumped a stunning 50% when seven-day viewing is added.

Granted, the "Dollhouse" base was extremely low -- the show went from a 1.0 rating to a 1.5. Many other shows during premiere week obviously gained far more than a half a rating point. But executives look at how much a show gained compared to its initial live-plus-same-day number, and to boost your rating by 50% is huge.

The CW's "Smallville," which also airs Friday nights, likewise gained 50%, tying "Dollhouse" for the biggest percentage gain.

"Dollhouse" has been doing pretty dreadful, but this news coupled with Friday's ratings gain will likely give some hope to Joss Whedon fans ... the question is whether it's enough to change the show's fate.

The next-biggest DVR gainer is The CW's "90210," climbing 40%.

Fox's "Fringe" is next on the list, up 39% -- no surprise considering its tough new time period.

Then "Melrose Place" (+38%) and "Gossip Girl" (+36%). Again, not a surprise, since the CW always posts high percentage gains thanks to its low base and young DVR-savvy audience.

Another Friday night show, NBC's "Law & Order" is next (+33%), followed by NBC's "Heroes" (+32%).

Few more: Fox's "Bones" (+29%), CBS' "The Mentalist" (+28%), CBS' "Numbers" (+28%), ABC's "Castle" (+26%), Fox's "Glee" (+26%) and NBC's "The Office" (+26%).

Though I haven't seen a breakdown on this point yet, I'm sure the average gain for premiere week is higher than it was last year.

So let's skip down to the bottom of the list and see who's gaining the least.

Among what's interesting down here is that Fox's "Dollhouse" lead-in, the new comedy "Brothers," was one of the least time-shifted shows -- gaining, well, when rounded it's 0%. Which proves that just because a scripted show is on Fridays doesn't mean people will necessarily check it out later.

NBC's "The Jay Leno Show" occupied many of the lower spots, generally gaining about a tenth of a rating point (or 5%).

CBS' "Cold Case" (+5%) and freshman sitcom "Accidentally on Purpose" (+6%) don't seem to be on many viewers season pass list.

Neither are Fox's Sunday animated comedies -- which is surprising. Especially with many guys watching "Sunday Night Football," you would think shows like "Cleveland" and "American Dad" would climb more than 8%.

Even if you add these DVR percentages to the Friday Night ratings, these are still pretty low overall viewership numbers.

[info]04nbod 12th-Oct-2009 07:19 pm (UTC)
That can't be denied but its inevitable on an American Friday Night. By CW Standards though the DVR ratings push Smallville into the CW's top rated programmes. Which is pretty sad for the CW I'll admit but its the facts.
[info]prophecypro 12th-Oct-2009 07:34 pm (UTC)
Not really, you add that 50% its still not topping Supernatural and VD, like now its just hovering around Gossip Girl numbers last year sans DVR. Plus I'm not entirely convinced that these numbers overlap with the same original viewers.

I know it pays to be optimistic, but I still don't see this show getting a third season. FOX has nothing to gain, really. :|
[info]devil_details 12th-Oct-2009 06:43 pm (UTC)
Me neither, but this is the new FOX we're talking about here; the one that's kept 'Til Death on this long.
[info]carnivalpapers 12th-Oct-2009 06:14 pm (UTC)
Yeah well my trust in FOX died with Firefly.

They gave Dollhouse a second chance. That was not only nice of them, not only faithful, not only reliable, not only beyond-the-call-of-duty... it was stupidly generous. I'm grateful that they were stupidly generous.

But for the fact that they gave Dollhouse a second chance, I no longer hold Firefly over them in the context of what I trust them for in future.

i lost it with futurama and arrested.

What? You're telling me that people record Friday night shows and watch them later? SHOCKING.

It doesn't seem all that surprising that shows that were watched by only 2 million people in the first place would have a higher jump in percentages than shows that were, you know, actually watched live by, like, anyone.
[info]waterylights 12th-Oct-2009 06:24 pm (UTC)
yeah, but it could be worse. it could be watched by only 2 million people and see virtually no jump in viewers when dvr numbers are counted in, like "brothers":

Among what's interesting down here is that Fox's "Dollhouse" lead-in, the new comedy "Brothers," was one of the least time-shifted shows -- gaining, well, when rounded it's 0%. Which proves that just because a scripted show is on Fridays doesn't mean people will necessarily check it out later.
[info]dryope 12th-Oct-2009 06:29 pm (UTC)
I guess what I am saying is, ranking them by percentage improvement means jack all. NCIS gained at least four times as many viewers as Dollhouse on DVR, but it was also watched by more than ten times as many in the first place, so you know where it ranks percentage-wise.

Yeah, Brothers and likely Til Death are worse, but honestly, are those the shows Dollhouse wants to be compared with? Because those are either de facto gone or only on because Sony is giving it away for free.
[info]crazyfruitlady 12th-Oct-2009 06:41 pm (UTC)
DVR numbers are a way of assessing how much potential you're fulfilling of the weekly audience. NCIS is closer to maxing out its weekly audience in terms of context and percentages. NCIS is also on on Tuesdays. I suspect were it on in Dollhouse's time slot of death, it would not be averaging 15+ million. More than Dollhouse, yeah, but percentages are a better way of establishing context than raw numbers.

I am sad because the season premier pretty much ended any love I had for Dollhouse.

I hate Paul Ballard so much.
[info]chrislola 12th-Oct-2009 06:23 pm (UTC)
I hate him too. Right now, he's the only problem I have with the show. I've already warmed up to Echo, but Paul is annoying as shit.
[info]jaleco 12th-Oct-2009 06:53 pm (UTC)
Yup. He is the only thing making me not want to watch at this point... though the premier this go-around was pretty boring. I was already waffling on it, he just made the decision for me.

Bah.
[info]uluviel 12th-Oct-2009 06:39 pm (UTC)
One of the down sides of Epitaph One was that we know Paul's not going to bite it anytime soon. :(
[info]adigallia 12th-Oct-2009 06:22 pm (UTC)
I'm glad Fringe gained a lot. I'm worried about it in such a competitive time slot.
[info]waterylights 12th-Oct-2009 06:23 pm (UTC)
i'm glad there's been positive dollhouse-related news coming out because i was getting sick of all the gloom-and-doom in the fandom. i still remain unconvinced this changes the fate of the show too dramatically, but, fuck, it's something. even the most miniscule speck of hope after weeks of panic feels pretty nice.
[info]soldoutmatinee 12th-Oct-2009 07:21 pm (UTC)
i agree. too much negative talk actually increases that chances of people not wanting to tune in because of such negative talk. it doesn't matter if the show is good, the fact that low ratings is bad means that "bad" is now attached to Dollhouse and less people will be interested. if good reports start to come out then maybe people will associate Dollhouse with something positive. if this doesn't happen soon then passersby will only remember headlines such as "dollhouse falls" and not even bother.
[info]juanitatequila 12th-Oct-2009 06:23 pm (UTC)
OMG PLS BRING KIKI BACK, PREFERABLY THE MALE VERSION.
[info]melissssssssa 12th-Oct-2009 06:24 pm (UTC)
THIS!!!
[info]soldoutmatinee 12th-Oct-2009 07:22 pm (UTC)
if only Victor could also start the self-awareness phase and start glitching. kiki needs to come back and give us an encore.
[info]chung_____chung 12th-Oct-2009 06:24 pm (UTC)
thats great, but since you can fast forward through commercials when dvr-ing, and commercial revenue is what keeps shows on the air, I fear that it will still be cancelled.
[info]waterylights 12th-Oct-2009 06:26 pm (UTC)
well, fox did say when they renewed the show for season two it's because they were impressed by the dvr numbers. so idk, it does hold some weight.

but it probably will still be canceled -_-
[info]soldoutmatinee 12th-Oct-2009 07:23 pm (UTC)
STOP WITH THE NEGATIVE TALK.

you're bringing me down, man.
[info]dissention_1 12th-Oct-2009 06:24 pm (UTC)
the ratings are so pitifully low that a 50% dvr gain barely matters.
