"Whip It" - Drew Barrymore's directorial debut that stars Ellen Page ("Juno"), Juliette Lewis and Kristen Wiig - opens Friday, providing a bit of distance from the visceral smash-bang of real live roller derby. It also has movie stars. A heavy surge of girl-power. And a sense of perfect timing, given what appears to be roller derby's international comeback (thousands crammed into a "Whip It" event in this city's Dundas Square during the recent film festival, temporarily gridlocking midtown).

My hair stylist is an alternate for the roller derby league here in Austin, so I always get to hear the stories of what's going on for her and she's stoked for this movie. I can't wait to see it.

I saw the sneak peak of this on Saturday and adored it. The underwater sequence made me cry. Not cause it was sad, but because it was cute and I want a boyfriend just so I can go do stupid things like that with him. Also, I had no clue this was Falling-In-Love-In-A-Coffee-Shop Landon Pigg until the credits! Boy, am I lost.

She's gotten far prettier in the last year.
Juno had a lame, too quippy script.
I mean, no one talks like the characters did in that film, even at their funniest.
The whole film sounded like comics tossing of one-liners.
