Petition for Roman Polanski

We have learned the astonishing news of Roman Polanski's arrest by the Swiss police on September 26th, upon arrival in Zurich (Switzerland) while on his way to a film festival where he was due to receive an award for his career in filmmaking.

His arrest follows an American arrest warrant dating from 1978 against the filmmaker, in a case of morals.

Filmmakers in France, in Europe, in the United States and around the world are dismayed by this decision. It seems inadmissible to them that an international cultural event, paying homage to one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers, is used by the police to apprehend him.

By their extraterritorial nature, film festivals the world over have always permitted works to be shown and for filmmakers to present them freely and safely, even when certain States opposed this.

The arrest of Roman Polanski in a neutral country, where he assumed he could travel without hindrance, undermines this tradition: it opens the way for actions of which no-one can know the effects.

Roman Polanski is a French citizen, a renown and international artist now facing extradition. This extradition, if it takes place, will be heavy in consequences and will take away his freedom.

Filmmakers, actors, producers and technicians - everyone involved in international filmmaking - want him to know that he has their support and friendship.

On September 16th, 2009, Mr. Charles Rivkin, the US Ambassador to France, received French artists and intellectuals at the embassy. He presented to them the new Minister Counselor for Public Affairs at the embassy, Ms Judith Baroody. In perfect French she lauded the Franco-American friendship and recommended the development of cultural relations between our two countries.

If only in the name of this friendship between our two countries, we demand the immediate release of Roman Polanski.

From myself I want to add that the message of this post is not "hey they signed it=rape is ok!" and I would like people to learn more about this case. Some good points can be found here

And this is what the victim wrote in her piece for LA Times:

"I know there is a price to pay for running. But who wouldn't think about running when facing a 50-year sentence from a judge who was clearly more interested in his own reputation than a fair judgment or even the well-being of the victim?" and

"My attitude surprises many people. That's because they didn't go through it all; they don't know everything that I know. People don't understand that the judge went back on his word. They don't know how unfairly we were all treated by the press. Talk about feeling violated! "

Exactly. Hollywood has its own moral code, but it still has to follow US law (last time I checked).
bronxdawn 29th-Sep-2009 04:29 pm (UTC)
IDGAF who signs these freaking petitions, the man drugged and raped (including ANALLY) a 13-year old girl. He was found guilty and skipped out on serving his sentence.

Why should he get a free pass because he's a great director? He ran away like a coward instead of serving his sentence like a truly penitent person would have. If he had just stayed and faced the music he would've long been out of prison already.

Fuck him.

sassi214 29th-Sep-2009 01:40 pm (UTC)
This, exactly.

Furthermore, if there was an issue with the judge going back on his word of probation, etc., it still DOES NOT MEAN IT WAS OKAY for Polanski to run.
If this was just a "regular ol' american citizen" these petitions and all of this support would not exist.
Roman Polanski does not deserve to be treated any differently.

greysquirrel 29th-Sep-2009 05:52 pm (UTC)
You know I never got that argument when this Polanski arrest first came up. So what if the judge was a fame whore? You take your sentence and start an appeal and he would of won it, and thank your lucky stars you have money to get a lawyer to get you out quicker than most ordinary citizens. Guy just didn't want to go to jail for being a rapist.

Guilty as part of a plea deal.

The victim has requested the charges be dropped.
ndobler 29th-Sep-2009 06:06 pm (UTC)
My thoughts exactly. The man made a bunch of great movies, but he's got time to do. (not at all) sorry about that.
jeterluva 30th-Sep-2009 12:41 am (UTC)
Word.
thrillho 29th-Sep-2009 01:00 pm (UTC)
Why didn't he just fucking appeal if the sentence outweighed the crime?
dissention_1 29th-Sep-2009 01:03 pm (UTC)

thrillho 29th-Sep-2009 01:06 pm (UTC)

Because he's a coward.
ipomoea 29th-Sep-2009 07:26 pm (UTC)
I'm not a lawyer, but I think and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, that by pleading guilty he waived the right to appeal.
sheilamarie 29th-Sep-2009 09:40 pm (UTC)
From what I've read, they've tried to get the sentence commuted or dismissed or something, but in order for it to go through, he has to SHOW UP in court. Meaning he'd probably be in a jail cell until the hearing could take place. It's REALLY stupid. From what I understand, the judge would have done what he wanted, but the law requires that he be in the courthouse. Seriously, how long would he have had to sit in a jail cell? The lawyer sets everything up, tells him the date, he shows up a day or two and turns himself in, spends a total of 1-2 days in a jail cell and everything would have been good. But NOOOOOoooOooO, he's "too good" for even that. Fucker. I hope they put him in jail and adds time for 30 years of this BS. I refuse to watch his movies. I don't care HOW good he is, you see, I'm too good for his crap.

akscully 29th-Sep-2009 01:01 pm (UTC)
It sounds like they're more upset that the ~sanctity~ of film festivals has been torn asunder. I didn't realize that they are the ancient Olympics of our times when old grievances and wars are to be put aside so we can focus on the competition.
bowlofcereal 29th-Sep-2009 01:55 pm (UTC)
A+ for your ekecheiria reference.
fortytwostars 29th-Sep-2009 03:40 pm (UTC)
The whole thing is appalling, but that right there -- it's a FUCKING FILM FESTIVAL, you dicks! Pull your head out of your asses and take a look at the world around you, because your movies are not the most important things in the universe! FUCK!

I'm so heated over all of this shit.
anakisa 29th-Sep-2009 03:47 pm (UTC)
hahaha ilu
socksandaphone 29th-Sep-2009 01:01 pm (UTC)
Okay I haven't been reading about this entire shit fest at all but are people just pissed because of the way they arrested him, or because they arrested him?
quirkly 29th-Sep-2009 01:03 pm (UTC)
I think a little bit of both.
socksandaphone 29th-Sep-2009 01:06 pm (UTC)
That's so messed up :(
pinkprincessnat 29th-Sep-2009 02:16 pm (UTC)
yeah i think a bit of both as well. Also the fact that it was on his way to the film festival and they were saying it may open out the realm for eg political prisoners or people who have escaped their country but have an important movie to promote about it or something like that. Hope that makes some sort of sense :S
jezabel 30th-Sep-2009 09:43 pm (UTC)
The petition seems to say the first argument, but that just seems like a circuitous defense for a rapist. I mean, if you thought what he did was wrong, wouldn't you just keep your mouth shut?
