Madonna booed.

Madonna was reportedly booed during her Sticky & Sweet tour in Bucharest, Romania on Wednesday for telling fans to fight discrimination against gays and gypsies, the Romanian Times reports:

"She told them: 'I've never been to Romania before and I am happy to be here. But I found out that there is a lot of discrimination against gypsies in Eastern Europe and that makes me very sad, especially because we believe in acceptance, gypsies, homosexuals, people that are different. Everyone must be treated the same, don't forget that!' But instead of the applause she expected fans jeered and booed the statement. There are over 500,000 gypsies officially registered in Romania but the real numbers are expected to be much more as many have not declared their ethnicity in a country where they face widespread discrimination. They are Romania's most socially and economically disadvantaged minority, with high illiteracy levels."

Gays in Romania face violence from nationalist and ultra-orthodox groups. In recent years, marchers at gay rights rallies in Bucharest have been met by hundreds of protesters who hurl stones, eggs, tomatoes, and trash at them in an effort to break up the marches.

Madonna's remarks reportedly happened during a performance of "La Isla Bonita". YouTube clips, most of which begin while the performance is underway, show no evidence of displeasure from the audience, though she may have made the remarks at the beginning of the song.

Imo, music and politics haven't been a good idea in 30 years.
[info]boobearbeth 27th-Aug-2009 09:04 pm (UTC)
That's the exact thing I was trying to tell the BB's at ontd_political!

Feels like a case of not knowing your audience.

[info]ellowyntinuviel 27th-Aug-2009 07:10 pm (UTC)
I phrased that in a way I don't like. *shrug* I applaud her view and that she's willing to stand for it, but I personally wouldn't go around stating an opinion that's unpopular and will no doubt get you booed. But that's just me.

There's something to be said about not just preaching to the choir, y'know?

This! (and lol at the perfect gif).
[info]concealedtruths Re: Oh no they didnt!27th-Aug-2009 08:28 pm (UTC)
aren't you generalizing a whole group now?

So that makes you a stupid asshole too!

YAY
[info]theriaulogy Re: Oh no they didnt!27th-Aug-2009 11:50 pm (UTC)
LOL aren't you making assumptions that the poster was referring to the whole crowd and not just the individual booers?
[info]peridotgem 27th-Aug-2009 07:04 pm (UTC)
aw, that sucks.
[info]junkyardbluess 27th-Aug-2009 07:05 pm (UTC)
That's cause she doesn't know what are the gypsies in ~our part of the world~ like.
[info]turi 27th-Aug-2009 07:20 pm (UTC)
now I'm curious, what are they like?
[info]itwasthecat 27th-Aug-2009 10:05 pm (UTC)
I'm from Bosnia, where there are a ton of gypsies, and while I can agree with you that they aren't generally the greatest of people, that's really because everyone hates them so much over there. They are just used to being the "trash" of the city, and no one gives a damn about them. Things could be totally different if people weren't such assholes in that part of the world, but whatever.
[info]guiltysweater 27th-Aug-2009 07:05 pm (UTC)
ugh i'm so sick of her & her disgusting soggy cooter pics. & why is this bitch dressed like a pinata in that gif?

On a school trip to central europe we were all getting organised in the prague train station and a drunk gypsy was staggering around asking us all for money...then she went into the thrift store or whatever the hell that was in there and stole a pair of pants, which the owner came out and grabbed from her

ah good times
[info]endingonfire Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~27th-Aug-2009 07:15 pm (UTC)
When my sister went to Italy for her grade 12 class trip this gypsy teenager in a dirty suit started following her and her friends around. He followed them for like 2 hours, making comments to them and trying to get close to them. She said it was weird. And he also kept offering to take a group picture for them, but she was pretty sure he would run away with it if he did.
[info]outsideleft Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~27th-Aug-2009 07:23 pm (UTC)
good for your dad.
[info]dedebee Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~27th-Aug-2009 07:26 pm (UTC)
They try to scam me at my theatre all the fucking time. They'll call and be like, "Someone touched my daughter's hair during a movie," or "I came with 10 people and we had to leave because my daughter got sick/my sister went into false labor/my grandmother had a heart attack" etc. When I ask if they still have their ticket stubs to prove their purchase, they always have conveniently thrown them out.
[info]saikaro_x Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~27th-Aug-2009 07:57 pm (UTC)
omg people do that at my theatre too! Not gypsies though, just people trying to take advantage haha.
[info]redleigh86 Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~27th-Aug-2009 08:11 pm (UTC)
lmao I work at a theater in rural american midwest and everyone tries to do that! it's not gypsies, it's cheapskates!
[info]officer_down Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~27th-Aug-2009 07:35 pm (UTC)
i ran one over with my car, then i lost a bunch of weight.

in actuality, the closest thing to a gypsy experience i had was going to a gogol bordello show. i met the band and they were nice.
[info]gillian86 Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~27th-Aug-2009 07:39 pm (UTC)
once, a gypsy spat on my mom when we we're having lunch, bc my mom wouldn't give her money. My mom went ballistic and tore her a new one.
[info]envyisbaggage Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~27th-Aug-2009 09:19 pm (UTC)
i was visiting bologna two years ago. the good citizens of bologna thought i was a gypsy. i guess they've never seen a mexican chick before. i was with my white father, and i got the weirdest stairs from everyone, everywhere we went. on the bright side the real gypsies left me alone, i guess they thought i was one of them
[info]velvetunicorn Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~27th-Aug-2009 09:31 pm (UTC)
I bought a embroidered table runner from a gypsy in Budapest. She wanted to give me this horrible plastic bracelet as well but I told her i didn't want to buy it. She gave it to me anyway so I gave her a Canada flag pin. She gave me a big hug and kissed me on the cheek.

Made my day.
[info]omgangiepants Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~27th-Aug-2009 11:34 pm (UTC)
I'm part Roma and no one in my family has ever stolen anything from anyone. SHOCKING
[info]broligarchy Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~28th-Aug-2009 12:30 am (UTC)
in italy i'd see them crawling on the street in the sun like their legs were broken or they were too weak to walk. later i saw one walking briskly through the park. yeah, okay.
[info]recognitions Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~28th-Aug-2009 12:53 am (UTC)
Hey, let's start a thread about horrible experiences we've had with black people!
[info]bay_bus_rider Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~28th-Aug-2009 02:40 am (UTC)
Right after I left Naples last summer, two Roma girls drowned on a beach near the city. Their bodies laid there for hours while people sunbathed nearby. I couldn't believe those were same beaches where I'd happily frolicked days before.

...oh, is that not the kind of ~experience~ you meant?
[info]kerrence Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~28th-Aug-2009 05:27 pm (UTC)
one time I said hi to a gypsy woman
she smiled at me really big and said hi back
what a horrible bitch
[info]jadedshock Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~28th-Aug-2009 05:40 pm (UTC)
When I was in Athens last summer, we were accosted several times by gypsies wherever we went. The most memorable experience was in the bus terminal, where a 5 year old boy tried to use shiny metal pieces thrown on our table to distract us and pick our pockets. Obviously we did not fall for that, but at one point over the trip my nice sweater was stolen so yeah I did eventually get "gypped."
[info]amaterasu_no_ki Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~28th-Aug-2009 05:53 pm (UTC)
So? I got pickpocketed by a bunch of Romanian teenagers when I was in Spain. Somehow I did not conclude that all Romanians or even a significant portion of Romanians like to pickpocket.
[info]gaulish Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~28th-Aug-2009 11:57 pm (UTC)
... Are you for fucking real?

[info]tokitoh Re: ONTD, share your gypsy experiences~29th-Aug-2009 07:48 pm (UTC)
when i went to italy with my friends, our tour guide made up a "code word" for when gypsies would come around because if we just said "omg look out gypsies" they would be like "oh icwudt" so instead he would say "UM TOYOTA" and we would all guard our bags. we got hasseled a lot which was frustrating when you're trying to enjoy the architecture (i went with my art history class so distractions were really annoying). this one really fat one wouldn't stop pulling our shirts and sticking her hands in our pockets. some of them had fake babies (like, plastic babies. you think we're that stupid?) and would be like "please, please, money for my baby" and it's like "uhh that aint a real baby" and she would get mad and just drop it out of frustration lmao

[info]leprince504 27th-Aug-2009 07:08 pm (UTC)
well good for her.

I'm sorry. I'm gay but having lived in Europe for a year I'm definitely prejudiced against gypsies. Esmeralda from Hunchback of Notre Dame they are not.
[info]rogues 27th-Aug-2009 07:10 pm (UTC)
what do you mean? i have never been to europe but i've only heard hearsay.
[info]1cupofrpattz 27th-Aug-2009 07:14 pm (UTC)
they are pretty good at stealing your shit. you can't even feel them.

but still. if they felt more respected they wouldn't do it to survive.
[info]recognitions 28th-Aug-2009 12:57 am (UTC)
Congratulations, you're now in the company of everyone who is prejudiced against gay people.
[info]carazon 28th-Aug-2009 02:55 am (UTC)
And what does being gay have to do with it? Does it make your prejudice more acceptable? No. No reason to mention it.
[info]gaulish 29th-Aug-2009 12:01 am (UTC)
Newsflash :D

Being prejudice against an ethnic group is pretty much the same as being homophobic!

Since Hitler and Stalin freely killed gypsies, just to name a few tyrannical leaders!
[info]urban_quilter Good for her!27th-Aug-2009 07:08 pm (UTC)
I'm glad she used her celebrity for something good.

A shame though, that she was booed.
[info]silverfox1027 27th-Aug-2009 07:09 pm (UTC)
Speaking out against discrimination? Not really a fan of her music, but good for her.
[info]zulkey 27th-Aug-2009 07:12 pm (UTC)
my dad got robbed by a gypsy once so I think that earned me the right to use the term "gypped" exactly once as a freebie.
[info]x_ap0488x 27th-Aug-2009 07:29 pm (UTC)
whoaaa i never knew that's where it came from haha

ikr? i just keep telling myself 'it's ontd, you can't expect any logic' but seriously, i am scared for the future of humanity when i see all the ignorance here.
[info]brina712 27th-Aug-2009 07:51 pm (UTC)
ummm why??? have you ever met a gypsie?or been to the black sea? or hell driven down the streets of smaller romanian cities?? the dislike twords gypsies is compleytely understandable
[info]maxymama 27th-Aug-2009 08:19 pm (UTC)
Hey, if it makes you feel any better, the crowd could have been booing about others being prejudiced. It didn't really seem like they were booing Madonna or disagreeing with her.
[info]1cupofrpattz 27th-Aug-2009 07:13 pm (UTC)
and that was a good message. fucking people.
