Jessica Simpson defends Indian giver remark

Simpson angered some Native American groups when she told us earlier this week she wasn't an Indian giver -- after we asked her if she would take back a boat she bought ex-BF Tony Romo as a gift.

When we asked her about the comment last night outside of Katsuya in Hollywood, she told us, "I am Indian, alright?"

Her Indian name would be She Who Does Not Speak Good.

rubberheadz_inc 2nd-Aug-2009 10:15 pm (UTC)
me too. It annoys me so much when people who are clearly white or black try to stretch out being 8% Choctaw or something, IF YOU'RE LESS THAN 25% OF SOMETHING IT REALLY DOESN'T MEAN SHIT.

Oh my god, so ... in this intercultural communications class I was taking, we watched this fucking stupid video series made in the early 90's about this ~diverse~ group of people (who were all women, by the way) to share their views on being among others who are soooo ~diverse~.
They all had to go around and say what their ethnicity was and EVERY FUCKING PERSON said their nationality, and also threw in "and also a little cherokee indian" It was so maddening. They were also 100% catholic, except one woman who was baptist.
hoot 2nd-Aug-2009 11:52 pm (UTC)
And related to Pocahontas.

Everyone I know who claims to be part Native American says that.
ididthatonce 3rd-Aug-2009 01:52 am (UTC)
"I'm part Cherokee" is the new "my best friend is Black"
kristinchaos 3rd-Aug-2009 04:13 am (UTC)
My ex used to try that shit all the time. He's like 1/16 Native, which is like the last generation in Canada where you're eligible to be status. I'm like dude, you're a fucking ginger with blue eyes, shut the fuck up.

Well, it is Jessica Simpson. Expecting even her hypothetical Native American name to be grammatically correct is a little much.

But that is one of my biggest pet peeves.

IA!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm Indian (the REAL type of Indian), and I hate when people refer to Native Americas as Indians. Okay, we get it. Christopher Columbus thought it was India, but he was WRONG.
must_go_faster 2nd-Aug-2009 08:49 pm (UTC)
haaaay BSB icon

at last there's a definite destinction between Native and Indian in English, in German it's still "Indianer" for Native American and "Inder" for Indian
imaginarylove 2nd-Aug-2009 09:39 pm (UTC)
i'm first nation/native/aboriginal canadian... and i hate it, too. soo inaccurate!

sporkier 2nd-Aug-2009 10:17 pm (UTC)
I don't HATE it or anything and I'm neither Indian or Native American, but I try to avoid saying 'Indian' in the wrong context because it sounds so wrong to me. I tend to talk about Indians sometimes, so I want to make sure when I say that, people know who I'm talking about.

Also, I never understood how CC just went west and thought he'd hit India. There's another whole mess of land he'd hit before he'd just run into India.
rubberheadz_inc 2nd-Aug-2009 10:19 pm (UTC)
IASFM. What's so hard about calling them Native Americans? This is 2009, not 1809.

She Who Does Not Speak Well.

If you're going to be clever, do it right.
merrite 2nd-Aug-2009 08:20 pm (UTC)
lol ikr
octopus_theater 2nd-Aug-2009 08:23 pm (UTC)
I think it was meant to be "Good" because it insinuates that Native Americans don't use proper grammar, and that Jessica Simpson as a Native American would undoubtedly say something like that.

Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it.
arcadiaego 2nd-Aug-2009 08:25 pm (UTC)
Or maybe it's insinuating that Jessica Simpson is an idiot. And therefore wouldn't use proper grammar.
squishy_candy 2nd-Aug-2009 08:27 pm (UTC)
it isn't the proper grammar, it has to do with the way we used to speak in broken english.
scargo 2nd-Aug-2009 08:24 pm (UTC)
lol it's tmz, that's asking for a bit too much
britasaurus_rex 2nd-Aug-2009 08:25 pm (UTC)
actually i think its funnier with "good." in the sarcastic, did it on purpose, making fun of her/mocking her way. the correct grammar way is not really funny or clever at all...
forgethissmile 2nd-Aug-2009 08:37 pm (UTC)
I think they were trying to be ironic there.
lady_sativa 2nd-Aug-2009 08:38 pm (UTC)
It's called irony.
imsodeep 2nd-Aug-2009 08:38 pm (UTC)
jfc they obviously did it on purpose. you people are dense.
firecracked 2nd-Aug-2009 08:49 pm (UTC)
I think that was intentional. Because she's a dumbass, you know.
laughing_dreams 2nd-Aug-2009 09:06 pm (UTC)
uhhhhh I think that was the point (srsly, the bad grammar was the joke)
coatkneedee 2nd-Aug-2009 09:41 pm (UTC)
