First Photo From Drew Barrymore's Whip It

USA Today has published the first photo from Fox Searchlight's Whip It, the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore.

The film stars Ellen Page (Juno) as Bliss, a rebellious Texas teen who throws in her small town beauty pageant crown for the rowdy world of roller derby. Marcia Gay Harden plays Bliss' disapproving mother, while Kristen Wiig ("Saturday Night Live") and Juliette Lewis play roller-derby stars. Eve, Jimmy Fallon and Daniel Stern also star.

I found it pretty easy to learn. Not like, crazy roller derby shit, but learning to roller skate anyway. It's probably even easier if you don't know how to rollerblade too. I went from rollerblading to skating and it was a bit awkward at first.

when I was in roller derby, a lot of the girls who were trying out/joining didn't know how to skate. my team was one of the highest ranked teams in the country and they still would have them work on their skating and come back and join later. if you can skate at all, they can teach you the skills you need for derby.

that being said, I found derby to be reallllly tough on my body and REALLY tough on my wallet and schedule (really expensive and time consuming) so I quit. I regret quitting, tho :(

I couldnt skate at ALL when I started roller derby.. now I'm one of the fastest girls on the team. If you are dedicated and practice, you can do it! :)

speaking of.. where the hell are these girl's mouth guards!!!!! and their helmets are too big or something :P

It's the teeny girls who can dodge the big blockers more easily.

Size really doesn't matter in roller derby. It's about honing your skills. :)

I tried derby and I sucked because I was too weak & small to take hits, so I feel your pain. Everyone says anyone can do it and I was fine with the skating part but just bounced off people instead of blocking them. :(

That's not true either! Don't be discouraged. The team I was on was 18-28. One of the teams we bouted with was comprised of women THE YOUNGEST starting at 26 and the oldest was like 43 or so?

Yes. Roller derby teams usually have a "theme", like pirates or wenches or something else not unlike a college halloween costume. Theirs appears to be girl scouts. I think they look pretty cute actually.
