Hilary Duff takes her Charity Internationally to Colombia, but Fans are Angry at Her

Hilary Duff has been designated ambassador for the youth of the city of Bogota. The mayor confirmed that she will be there between August 1 and August 15. No word on how long she will be there. Mayor of Bogota is naming her the guest of honor and official ambassador for the cause. She will be promoting her charity, "Blessing in a Backpack" in district school and community diners. She will be extending her charity plans to a new project campaigning the importance of vaccination. Negotiations have been made with the mayor of the city. He explains that feeding campaigns in Bogota have motivated Hilary to bring her project there.

From the comments at the newspaper websiteIt seems many Colombian fans are angry at her and the mayor is stupid. This is because of an incident from 2005, where Hilary cancelled the only South American leg she has ever had on a tour and promised to reschedule new dates. She never returned to South America for a concert (Brazil excluded.)

It's great that she's extending her chairty, hopefully one day it can go global. I'm sure she had a good reason for not being able to go, though I'd probably be mad also. There are also rumors going around that she's going to do a surprise performance for them, but I doubt it though you never know.

I've always wanted to go to Colombia but I'm scared i'll get kidnapped.
[info]hannah_or_hanna 5th-Jul-2009 05:45 pm (UTC)
But then Russell Crowe would come rescue you, so...
[info]a_way_of_sin 5th-Jul-2009 05:47 pm (UTC)
lol
[info]darlyka 5th-Jul-2009 05:49 pm (UTC)
Oh c´mon, don´t say that, it´s unfair and untruth... all about that kidnapping thing is just bad publicity and a legend, right now, there´s so much garanties to go there and have really fun `cause the country is really beautiful and you have the chance to know so many things that you can´t find in another place... so go ahead and came to Colombia, you´ll be surprise to discover that anything of that is true ;) peace out
[info]moritazul 5th-Jul-2009 05:56 pm (UTC)
that's not true bb. U should come it's beautiful
[info]somnambulance 5th-Jul-2009 06:06 pm (UTC)
no way, i came for vacation and as long as you stay safe (pref. in a big city) you´re good. come, come, and it´s beautiful!
[info]obvyimhot 5th-Jul-2009 06:13 pm (UTC)
You would. The drug war there is RIDICULOUS. They would hold you hostage because you're an American and a hot commodity, they would want to sell your organs too.

Just sayin', bb.

I don't know about the interior of the country, but I've been to Cartagena & Santa Marta, Taganga etc and it was seriously wonderful. The people are incredibly warm and friendly even when you are a dumbass like me who speaks close to no Spanish. I really want to go back someday.
[info]beachtrees 5th-Jul-2009 06:44 pm (UTC)
Yeah my friend who is from there told me not to go because it can be dangerous.
[info]esearcher 5th-Jul-2009 06:49 pm (UTC)
My "uncle" (you know, the close family friend who gets called uncle) was colombian and went back for a visit, got kidnapped and then shot execution style. Doubt I'll ever go to colombia.
[info]preciosatt 5th-Jul-2009 06:56 pm (UTC)
I did a semester abroad in Bogota and I've never felt safer. Soldiers and police every which way.
[info]littlestarletta 5th-Jul-2009 07:01 pm (UTC)

I went to Cartagena when I was 9. Apparently I have mega rich family there, so we stayed in super security penthouses and had bodyguards.

It was the most awesome vacation that has ever happened and I wish I had been old enough to truly appreciate it. However, I wouldn't go without all that security.
[info]remotecars 5th-Jul-2009 07:58 pm (UTC)
I live in Colombia.. It doesn't work like that. lol.
If you're camping in the amazon, you will probably get kidnapped..
I live in Barranquilla.. from where Shakira is from. lol.
I do complain a little because it's a small town and I get bored sometimes,
and I've been in the U.S. like 5 times in my life and U.S. is amazing,
but I'll never change my hometown for anything..
There's no ruleees!
I swear you can have so much fun.

You should come.

i'm currently living here, and it's pretty amazing. i came here with a huge group of friends to volunteer and it's a pretty safe place. unless you do really stupid things like go into the jungle to seek the farc troops.

[info]rose_of_love 5th-Jul-2009 05:40 pm (UTC)

[info]toaerythinness 5th-Jul-2009 05:41 pm (UTC)

[info]thegirlshateher 5th-Jul-2009 05:31 pm (UTC)
I don't get this charity.

It says their goal is: "Helping meet the nutritional needs of our country's children on the weekend, to aid in their educational success."

But when she was here handing out food, it was stuff like ramen noodles. I'm not sure that really meets anyone's nutritional needs.
[info]joshluvsduff 5th-Jul-2009 05:34 pm (UTC)
Hm I never really thought about that, they still get the food though.
[info]amelia_heinle 5th-Jul-2009 05:34 pm (UTC)
hahahahahahaaaaaaaa

[info]calderone9 5th-Jul-2009 05:37 pm (UTC)
haha
[info]thebootyfaerie 5th-Jul-2009 05:40 pm (UTC)
Calories + multivitamins?

It's not the best solution, but it's better than nothing.

Seriously, not getting enough calories sucks.
[info]artvandellay 5th-Jul-2009 05:50 pm (UTC)
Some kids have no access to food on the weekends when they're not in school. Pre-packaged food is not ideal, but it's better than letting the kids starve and it's more feasible than handing out perishable food.
[info]beachtrees 5th-Jul-2009 06:48 pm (UTC)
I think that is just at the event for them to take home? I don't know but I read that she donates enough money annually for them to provide food on the weekends, so maybe normally they provide better food at the schools, but I don't know.
[info]bertiedav 5th-Jul-2009 07:02 pm (UTC)
UNF, ICON <3 and iawtc
[info]a_life_verbatim 5th-Jul-2009 10:21 pm (UTC)
on the weekend only? Does she mean she only feeds them on the weekend? Or she hands out food on the weekend?
[info]benn22 OT: OMG! 75 Britney Fans passed out last night!5th-Jul-2009 05:32 pm (UTC)
They haven't upgraded air conditioning into the Bercy in Paris. Hottest venue I have ever been in. 75 people passed out last night...

She never returned to South America for a concert (Brazil excluded.)

Why doesn't Brazil count?
[info]joshluvsduff 5th-Jul-2009 05:37 pm (UTC)
Because she went to Brazil for the Dignity tour
[info]polniaczek 5th-Jul-2009 05:39 pm (UTC)

[info]thisgirlownsmlb 5th-Jul-2009 05:40 pm (UTC)
I would probably say something snarky, but my brain is too tired after watching the Men's Final Wimbledon Match.

So, go Hilary.
[info]keef_riffhards 5th-Jul-2009 05:42 pm (UTC)
she looks fucking hot there. that's all that matters.
[info]neimans 5th-Jul-2009 05:45 pm (UTC)
why is she still relevant?
[info]bothered 5th-Jul-2009 05:47 pm (UTC)
She's looked a lot bigger. Did she get implants or did she finally hit puberty from the last time I actually paid attention to her?

[info]joshluvsduff 5th-Jul-2009 05:52 pm (UTC)
She gained much weight
[info]jlb88 5th-Jul-2009 07:14 pm (UTC)
