New book reveals what really happened to Britney during her meltdown

Rumors about what happened during Britney's supposed comeback at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards have been aflutter like a butterfly on Aderall -- and now answers are here.

A new book, "Britney: Inside the Dream" by Steve Dennis, exposes the truth behind the past few years of Brit's life. From custody battles to head-shaving antics and broken hearts, the book provides an inside look at the incidents that preceded each Britney breakdown.

The Mirror exclusively has excerpts from the book -- including how booze, confusion and a famous ex led to a chaotic spiral that fueled her horrendous MTV performance.

The book says that "Britney herself managed to ruin the most important performance of her life. Hours before the show, her anxieties raged. She decided it was a good idea to start drinking tequila shots to calm her nerves - one after the other."

From the first drop of Patron, the madness just seemed to twirl out control. It seems that Justin Timberlake decided to drop by to say good luck. Nice right? Apparently "he was cool and couldn't have been friendlier, but that wigged her out more," says a backstage source. "She was freaking out over the littlest thing."

The story goes on to reveal numerous dressing room mishaps, like the unexpected last-minute firing of hair and makeup team members and meltdowns of gigantic proportions. Then as things seemed to settle, Britney got dressed alone and decided to wear the infamous black bra, black hot pants and fishnets instead of the planned Trish Somerville one piece.

She was then rushed on stage by an MTV assistant, leaving no time for her team to step in. The rest is pop history. Now, as Britney's "Circus" tour raps up, it's nice to know there is a happy ending to an otherwise grim storybook. I guess you have to be cocooned by yucky before you can spread your new wings, right Brit?

In the new book, Britney: Inside The Dream, author Steve Dennis says Britney shaved her hair off in 2007 to spite her mother and management, who forced Britney into a terrible life of international stardom and untold riches. The Sun reports:

"The head-shaving had little do with self-loathing, more a loathing against the public persona that had defined her until then. "What few people knew was that Britney was rowing with her mum, LYNNE, who seemed to be incessantly reminding her of her motherly duties and responsibilities. "What made Britney most irate was that her mama kept mentioning how her ex Kevin wasn't forever on the town. This was all being viewed as controlling behaviour. "The head-shaving moment was the culmination of an escalating rebellion, heightened by heartbreak over her divorce and custody battle, that can be traced back to 2004 when Britney decided she no longer wished to conform, be controlled or take instruction." Steve adds: "What better way to rid herself of the performer's identity than by losing the very hair she famous for - sabotaging the act to free the person?"

[info]_ohsweetheart 4th-Jun-2009 02:56 am (UTC)
Have we ever seen the original costume she was SUPPOSED to wear?

And are her parents really that bad? I know that her mom is a total stage mom, but if not for them, she'd be dead by now, or at the very least Sam Lufti would still have her high out of her mind, running around Hollywood with her bloody tampon sticking out and a look of total bewilderment on her face.
[info]americandream17 4th-Jun-2009 02:58 am (UTC)
we actually did see a quick rehearsal snipped from tmz and she was wearing a pretty decent outfit from what I recall.
[info]im_shellfish 4th-Jun-2009 03:00 am (UTC)
ikr
[info]jennomac 4th-Jun-2009 03:01 am (UTC)
I don't think her parents are that bad.

Idk maybe because I'm used to parents being controlling and honestly a lot of it is because it's easier for parents to control their kids as a way of teaching/raising kids. There's no guide book to parenting. Her parents might've done a lot wrong but they do right where it counts.

Like Lynn stepping on Britney with the kids? I'm sure that was her way of making Britney get her shit together because she didn't want to see her lose her kids.

And with Jamie now as Britney's like... guardian, he'd rather be looking out on her every move than allow Sam and Adnan back into Britney's life.

Idk I don't see them as evil as people try to make them out to be tbqh.
[info]helloneworld 4th-Jun-2009 07:54 am (UTC)
WHAT gets me is that the parents act as though, if they give her busy work, then she'llb e fine. but what she really needs is psychiatric help or maybe even a therapist or counselor.

they act as though giving her busy work will cure her of any emotional, psychological, and mental problems that she has. busy work just delays those things, it doesn't cure them. if they really cared, they'd let her take time off and focus on her and be in some sort of emotional/mental health facility.
[info]charmattackk 4th-Jun-2009 02:56 am (UTC)
you know, i actually totally get why she'd shave her hair off.

i think it's bad ass and it made me like her more.
[info]bitte_ein_kuss 4th-Jun-2009 03:03 am (UTC)
i loved it, too. i just regret her inability to own the cropped hair afterward, and her desperate attempt to backpedal with nasty weaves.
she could have spun that story to be so positive rather than let everyone write her off as insane
[info]lazaro_jack 4th-Jun-2009 03:07 am (UTC)
ia and I thought she looked beautiful afterward:).
[info]arianna_meli 4th-Jun-2009 02:56 am (UTC)
Ugh, I fucking love her.
[info]bingeweek 4th-Jun-2009 02:56 am (UTC)
ill wait until her authorized book comes out
[info]trendpimps 4th-Jun-2009 03:00 am (UTC)
I seriously doubt that her team of handlers would let Britney truthfully tell her side of the story any time soon, but we can dream, can't we?
[info]bingeweek 4th-Jun-2009 04:00 am (UTC)
maybe not anytime soon, but if in 10, 15, even 20 years it comes out, ill still be picking up a copy.
[info]my_drama_only 4th-Jun-2009 02:56 am (UTC)
Almost every story/book/article/interview is a "tell-all", "no questions unanswered", "what really happened" kinda thing.
[info]platinumskies 4th-Jun-2009 03:35 am (UTC)
just like every marilyn biog "what really happened!" I feel like, well how do you know?
[info]grande_latte 4th-Jun-2009 02:57 am (UTC)
why do we all just move one from this BS. she made her comeback and is back on track. enough of this omg the truth about what she went through during her meltdown BS

[info]crazyfirecrotch BULLSHIT!4th-Jun-2009 02:57 am (UTC)
But I love how the cover looks like an unofficial fan club book you can buy @ your local public school scholastic book fair.
[info]pnuttbuttajelli Re: BULLSHIT!4th-Jun-2009 03:17 am (UTC)
omfg i totally forgot about the scholastic book fair!
omg i would beg my mom for $5 and try to get something cool, but it would always cost like $6 :-\
[info]trendpimps Re: BULLSHIT!4th-Jun-2009 03:17 am (UTC)
I know! But I use to love those trashy things in middle/high school. I ones on Britney, 'NSync, and the Backstreet Boys. Ah, those were the days.
[info]_underwhelmed Re: BULLSHIT!4th-Jun-2009 04:57 am (UTC)
i hope it has a tear out poster in the center!!!!1
[info]americandream17 4th-Jun-2009 02:57 am (UTC)
UM, an outsider who knows absolutely nothing about her and her family?

yeah, ok.
[info]crazyfirecrotch 4th-Jun-2009 02:59 am (UTC)
that's what fucking pissed me off about the whole "blackout" era of britney's life.

nobody knew what was going on and all these supposed experts like dr. phil. dr. drew and fucktard panelists were giving their diagnosis and perspectives of what was happening to her.

[info]americandream17 4th-Jun-2009 03:02 am (UTC)
I know bb. It pissed me off. But there's only so much you can do, ya know? Only Britney truly knew what was happening at that time. And whether or not she remembers it all is out of the question. The only thing we do know is that Sam Lutfi was drugging her out of her mind, according to the court documents from her mother.
[info]memento 4th-Jun-2009 03:03 am (UTC)
It's apparently an unpopular opinion, but I really hate Dr. Drew.
[info]england88533 4th-Jun-2009 08:42 pm (UTC)
mte! who the fuck is Steve Dennis?
[info]mechuparmucho 4th-Jun-2009 02:57 am (UTC)
