Mariah Carey blames 9/11, director for failure of ‘Glitter’

Mariah Carey is speaking out about the failure of her first starring film role, Glitter, all those years ago. Mariah knows the film wasn’t that great - in fact, she blames the director in a hilarious aside, saying “But I didn’t have representation or anyone to tell me: ‘What you need is a great director’.” Snort, chuckle. Because that’s why Glitter failed - everyone said, “I really want to see that Mariah Carey movie, but the director sucks.” Of course.

Beyond the bad direction, Mariah knows where to really lay the blame, though. Right at the feet of the terrorists who struck America on September 11th, 2001. Yes, Mariah thinks Glitter would have been received differently if only the release date hadn’t been September 11th. Yes, that must be it:

Mariah Carey says her infamously bad movie debut Glitter failed because of 9/11.

The singer — who stars in new movie Precious – says her semi-biographical film was destined to bomb at the box office as it was released on exactly the same day as the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center eight years ago.

“That movie was released on September 11th, 2001 – could there be a worse day for that movie to come out? I don’t think so,” she said. “I don’t even know that many people even saw the movie so I don’t think it’s the worst thing ever done.”

“Glitter was a learning experience and I wouldn’t do it again if you paid me. But I didn’t have representation or anyone to tell me: ‘What you need is a great director’.”

Carey, 39, recently played down her reputation as a diva — insisting she is simply misunderstood.

“I have been through a lot that’s made me stronger,” she said. “They say: whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. So I’ve been through that kind of stuff a few times.”

“A lot of people have very different opinions about me and it’s difficult to face them and to deal with them and to go on and to say: no, actually you’re wrong. I am this, I am not that.”

[From Showbiz Spy]

I don’t have a problem with Mariah generally, she’s pretty harmless. But what started out as a gentle mocking of Glitter is turning into Mariah’s decade-long delusion that she would be a big movie star if only an epically horrible national tragedy struck just when she was trying to make it big in movies. Yes, Mariah is self-absorbed, this is not breaking news. But you’d think that even after all of these years, Mariah would still want to pepper her words with a little perspective. Something like “Glitter wasn’t released at the right time, no one was in the mood for it because we were all terrified and grief-stricken, and my heart still goes out to the 9/11 families.” Something like that.

By the way, this isn’t the first time Mariah has blamed 9/11, or the first time she’s played fast and loose with the quality of Glitter. Several years ago, she famously said, “The talk shows needed something to distract from 9/11. I became a punching bag. I was so successful that they tore me down because my album was at number 2 instead of number 1. The media was laughing at me and attacked me…Glitter was ahead of its time. Today it’s ‘in’ to make 80’s music.” Oh, Mariah. Get a grip.

That kinda makes sense though...
[info]spicegalaxy 2nd-Jun-2009 04:49 pm (UTC)
As shitty as the movie was, I'm sure the timing did it no favours.
[info]kerrence 2nd-Jun-2009 04:52 pm (UTC)
most people I know who saw it went to go see it to escape watching the news 24/7
[info]rara8777 2nd-Jun-2009 04:56 pm (UTC)
I got so sick of the news after the first few days. That was just...so not necessary.
[info]fautedemieux73 2nd-Jun-2009 04:59 pm (UTC)
Exactly! People were going out to movies and looking for ways to entertain themselves as a way to escape.
[info]nunya_b 2nd-Jun-2009 04:49 pm (UTC)
movies don't come out on tuesdays
[info]nunya_b 2nd-Jun-2009 04:49 pm (UTC)
i mean i get the point, a lot of stuff was commercially interrupted by 9/11, but there is no way it was actually released "the day of"
[info]shamrocka01 2nd-Jun-2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
it actually was, and movies get released on weekdays all the time. blockbusters tend to be released on weekends when they can compete.
[info]xpiscesgrl227x 2nd-Jun-2009 04:56 pm (UTC)
I was just going to say that.
[info]mattp650 2nd-Jun-2009 05:12 pm (UTC)
ur right - the soundtrack came out on sept. 11, but the movie came out sept. 21. i know this because I bought the album and saw the movie their first day of release....yikes. (even tho the soundtracks actually good, and the movie's not THAT bad)
[info]colossusx 2nd-Jun-2009 05:23 pm (UTC)
movies come out on wednesdays, thursdays or fridays. music comes out on tuesdays. i feel like i shouldn't know this.
[info]_mscaligurl_ 2nd-Jun-2009 05:26 pm (UTC)

I saw Glitter for the first time a few weeks ago and it wasn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I agree with Mariah about the directing, it was really bad and made it look cheesy.
[info]higherplace 2nd-Jun-2009 04:50 pm (UTC)
k what?
[info]setfornine 2nd-Jun-2009 06:30 pm (UTC)

[info]like_torches 2nd-Jun-2009 04:51 pm (UTC)
Well I guess the way to see if this is true or not is to see what other movies came out the same day as Glitter and compare.

But I'm too lazy to do this. And I honestly don't care that much.
[info]charmattackk 2nd-Jun-2009 05:45 pm (UTC)
that same weekend that keanu reeves movie with the inner city kids came out and it still did semi-decent considering.
[info]shamrocka01 2nd-Jun-2009 04:51 pm (UTC)
ahead of its time? rly?
[info]viakenny 2nd-Jun-2009 06:20 pm (UTC)

i completely agree with the 2nd quote. writers decided american "needed" someone to laugh at in the wake of 9/11, and her bout of exhaustion couldn't have come at a more "perfect" time as she'd never really been a punching bag before and they jumped on the chance.
[info]shamrocka01 2nd-Jun-2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
she should make a movie about this.
[info]fautedemieux73 2nd-Jun-2009 05:01 pm (UTC)
I think people would have made fun of that movie regardless of 9/11.
[info]cherrybombx 2nd-Jun-2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
so does 'ahead of its time' mean 11 years after the 80s ended? i get what she thinks she might be trying to say but uhhh no peg
[info]vikingsmn 2nd-Jun-2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
Really, 9/11 was the reason your movie failed!? Not the fact that Glitter was a HORRIBLE movie and you were HORRIBLE in it.
[info]qt1923 2nd-Jun-2009 07:17 pm (UTC)
ikr lmao
[info]kerrence 2nd-Jun-2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
idk I'm pretty sure most of the people who saw it saw it because of 9/11 and wanting to get away from the news for a little bit

it would have bombed either way
