Cynthia Nixon and Melissa Etheridge respond to Prop 8 ruling

“Upholding the discriminatory Proposition 8 marks May 26, 2009, as a dark day for the people of California. The idea that gay families like mine should not be included in our country's promise of equal rights for all citizens is deeply un-American. While California has taken a giant step backwards, states like Maine and Iowa (and soon, I hope, New York) are leading with way towards a fairer and better tomorrow.”

-- Cynthia Nixon on the California supreme court's decision to uphold Prop. 8

"So, will anyone be sleeping better tonight? Those full of hate and fear will surely be disappointed that 18,000 same-sex couples will be living in wedded bliss, kissing their spouses goodnight, checking off those little 'married' boxes on all those forms we fill out nowadays. That’s really going to drive them crazy. Then there are those of us like me who still dangle in 'domestic partnership.' We can adopt our own children, but we can’t bring our partners who might be citizens from out of the country, here. We can’t file joint tax returns. I could go on. Who will be happy tonight?

"How do I explain this to my children? 'Well, you know Ellen? She is married, but Mommy and I are not.' That is liberty and justice for all? I am hopeful as I see more and more states turn to the inevitable future of equality, California will get there. Change takes time."

-- Melissa Etheridge on the California supreme court's decision to uphold Prop. 8

Dear California Supreme Court,

You suck.
[info]shegotaflavor 26th-May-2009 11:39 pm (UTC)
A-FUCKING-GREED. UGH.
[info]degele 26th-May-2009 11:51 pm (UTC)
I don't think it's their fault. Wasn't Prop 8 an amendment? If so, then they really couldn't do much about it (correct me if I'm wrong).
[info]trop_fort 26th-May-2009 11:55 pm (UTC)
It's not the Supreme Court's fault, unfortunately. They're constrained by legal terms, definitions, and of course laws. In the end, while I favor gay marriage, I think the Court was correct in upholding the amendment protocols laid down by the Constitution. When gay marriage is inevitably legalized, the legal precedent will be for it to stick.
[info]sonnete 27th-May-2009 12:25 am (UTC)
Dear People Who Don't Understand How the Legal System Works At All,

Shut up.
[info]ladyofshalott06 27th-May-2009 12:57 am (UTC)
I'll add my vote here.
[info]rigli 27th-May-2009 02:22 am (UTC)

[info]pink__sparklies 26th-May-2009 11:42 pm (UTC)
Hate.
[info]laceleather 26th-May-2009 11:51 pm (UTC)
you know it's funny, i tried to tell my mother that voting for prop 8 is hate (bc she voted yes on it), and she said "hate? why hate? i dont hate anyone."

idk what to do anymore with people O_O
[info]eleven59 26th-May-2009 11:43 pm (UTC)
Homophobia is a powerful thing.

People are afraid of change, even if it really doesn't have anything to do with them.
[info]degele 26th-May-2009 11:52 pm (UTC)
IA. It doesn't hurt anyone, I just don't get it.
[info]sndravt 27th-May-2009 12:59 am (UTC)
Our generation is so open minded and older people are so damn narrow minded generally. Not all of course, but definately most. Unfortunately the older people do the most voting. If the younger people had all gone out and voted I think it would be different.
[info]banabee 27th-May-2009 01:56 am (UTC)
'cause the Bible says it's an ~abomination~
[info]rigli 27th-May-2009 02:23 am (UTC)
because its wrong and marriage is 1 man + 1 woman and always has been
[info]wifeofset 27th-May-2009 02:25 am (UTC)
My mom and I discussed this today right before I called her a racist and a bigot (true facts).. Apparently the "normal" conservative person says they don't want to tell "the gays" what to do, they just don't want them to get married because God says it's wrong. Which is telling them what to do...idk, idk...

Then she said she also didn't think anyone should marry outside their race and that wasn't wrong because she was raised that way and I made the D: face at my phone and said, "holy shit mom, so you're a bigot AND a racist? What the hell..." She got testy with me
[info]loosma 27th-May-2009 02:28 am (UTC)
religion.
[info]gerrycurls 26th-May-2009 11:40 pm (UTC)
It's so sad and stupid that gay people have to vote for their rights. :(
[info]ecctv 26th-May-2009 11:40 pm (UTC)

yep, that's me.
[info]pink__sparklies 26th-May-2009 11:41 pm (UTC)
Not yet.
[info]another_grl 26th-May-2009 11:42 pm (UTC)
Not yet... I know they are trying to legalize it through the state legislature.

Though I think the state recognizes out-of-state marriages atm.
[info]czardonic 26th-May-2009 11:59 pm (UTC)
out of state marriages are recognized, but you can't get married in new york.
[info]sternel 27th-May-2009 02:31 am (UTC)
Marriages from other states are fully recognized (o hai thar full faith & credit clause). There's a bill up before the state legis. to recognize marriages conducted in the state, so we'll see. I'm crossing my fingers.
[info]pink__sparklies 26th-May-2009 11:41 pm (UTC)
They can only keep it from happening for so long.

Hang in there California, it's coming.
[info]102bb 26th-May-2009 11:42 pm (UTC)
Sad. :(
[info]bagelofdeath 26th-May-2009 11:43 pm (UTC)
Sadly, yes.
[info]degele 26th-May-2009 11:53 pm (UTC)
ITA. I never get it and I never will get it. Just fucking let people live, you know?
[info]carrie1982 27th-May-2009 12:55 am (UTC)
No shit. Get over it and quit denying people their rights.
[info]rigli 27th-May-2009 02:25 am (UTC)
other ppl are trying to force there beliefs on my church. thats wrong
[info]ididthatonce 27th-May-2009 03:24 am (UTC)
Your church is trying to force its beliefs on me. It's only fair.
[info]laceleather 27th-May-2009 05:08 am (UTC)
bitch sit down
[info]arcadiaego 27th-May-2009 06:31 pm (UTC)
Their, not there. And no, they're not.
[info]bagelofdeath 26th-May-2009 11:43 pm (UTC)
It's such a strange issue because it's so basic and yet it isn't allowed to happen. There are literally no valid arguments explaining why gay marriage shouldn't be allowed. All there is is "This really old book vaguely implies that it shouldn't happen".
[info]nymphadoratonks 26th-May-2009 11:45 pm (UTC)
my mother told me once that if gay people could get married, it would lead to people wanting to get married to anything - even their dog!
[info]pink__sparklies 26th-May-2009 11:46 pm (UTC)
Because it's totally the same thing...
[info]squippo 26th-May-2009 11:52 pm (UTC)
My mum had the same argument, I wanted to slap her.

Today's a sad day in California.
[info]realityvsdreams 26th-May-2009 11:53 pm (UTC)
I HATE this stupid argument. Two consenting legal adults does not equal a man and a dog.
[info]de_wood 26th-May-2009 11:57 pm (UTC)
I think that's just the zoophilia lobby trying to get the notion out there.
[info]inthiscolony 26th-May-2009 11:57 pm (UTC)
some 14 year old said that to me...
you should tell your mother she has the mind-set of a 14 year old.
[info]blubberoddment 27th-May-2009 12:19 am (UTC)
You just put into words what I couldn't. There is seriously NO valid argument against it. It's sort of scary to me to realize that so many people can be so ILLOGICAL ().
[info]etymolology 26th-May-2009 11:43 pm (UTC)
I'm so embarrassed.
CA is better than this.
[info]itone 26th-May-2009 11:44 pm (UTC)
I've seen your true colors California and i don't like them! You had all of us fooled all this time. Turns out you're as ignorant and stupid as "those other" states.
[info]pink__sparklies 26th-May-2009 11:46 pm (UTC)
Except Iowa!
[info]carrie1982 27th-May-2009 01:03 am (UTC)
I just moved from Iowa to California.
[info]gingerslam2 26th-May-2009 11:54 pm (UTC)
the thing you gotta realize about CA is for every ten fabulous hipster/hippie type there's 100 rich white old people in Palos Verdes, Santa Barbara etc who think gay marriage is wrong.
[info]laurie_springs 27th-May-2009 12:04 am (UTC)
Didn't you say the same "true colors" thing about Canada?
[info]almightyspaz 26th-May-2009 11:44 pm (UTC)
Come to CT people! Gay marriage is legal here.

Dear California,

Quit being wimpy girly men and give everyone equal rights.
[info]cluelessraf 26th-May-2009 11:45 pm (UTC)
you mean, come to New England. :D (minus Rhode Island)
[info]xo_inyourdreams 26th-May-2009 11:54 pm (UTC)
I always forget CT has gay marriage. I always forget about CT, but whenever I hear they allow gay marriage it gets bumped up to one of my fave states :D
[info]almightyspaz 27th-May-2009 11:37 pm (UTC)
I've lived in CT my whole life, there's not much here, but we got gay marriage so I loves it just a little but more.
[info]asaresquares 26th-May-2009 11:59 pm (UTC)
Move to the northeast en generale, imo.
[info]cluelessraf 26th-May-2009 11:44 pm (UTC)
So, I'm gay and I don't like rainbows. What do I do?
[info]pink__sparklies 26th-May-2009 11:45 pm (UTC)
You're straight.
[info]cluelessraf 27th-May-2009 12:02 am (UTC)
I am not. I crossed that rainbow, and I know it.
[info]deerlike 26th-May-2009 11:59 pm (UTC)
Do you like pink triangles?
[info]mystride 27th-May-2009 12:06 am (UTC)
i think a lot of fellow lesbians look like they smell bad. jk ... maybe
[info]pink__sparklies 26th-May-2009 11:45 pm (UTC)
I wonder how much money the Mormon church as put into this so far? How many millions of dollars have been used to spew their hatred?

I just think that they could have used all of this money on something that really matters like homelessness or child abuse. But apparently Jesus is more concerned about the gays.
[info]ladyofshalott06 27th-May-2009 12:59 am (UTC)
They require money from their members that they spend on shopping malls and preventing equal rights for gay people while those same members who are giving money are struggling to put food on the table.

screw that brainwashing church.
[info]elegancewaves 27th-May-2009 08:02 am (UTC)
Which is funny when you think of all the money they could be making off performing gay marriages lol. Kinda seems like backpedalling to me. I mean think about it. They spend thoooooousands of dollars to make sure that wonderful, kind people with disposable incomes who love a good celebration can't spend money at their churches.
[info]pink__sparklies 27th-May-2009 03:59 pm (UTC)
They actually spend MILLIONS of dollars on that.
