Mandy Moore is a Fat Ass

There are many things Mandy Moore loves: her dog, Joni. Her husband, musician Ryan Adams. Her new album, Amanda Leigh. Peanut butter. One area on which she admittedly has mixed feelings? Her hips.

"I still have a love-hate relationship with them," Moore, 25, tells PEOPLE. "I'm not a swizzle stick – I'm not 14 anymore."

But the singer-actress, an accidental poster child for being beautiful the healthy way, says she has learned to embrace all her womanly curves – even those hips. While the 5'10" beauty tries to stay balanced by eating "colorful foods," getting acupuncture and exercising regularly, she doesn't get hung up on dieting.

"I appreciate when there are other women out there who are beautiful and aren't, you know, a pound," she says. "I feel lucky that I don't feel pressure ... to have my whole life be controlled by whether I fit into a certain size."

Moore says moderation – and allowing for indulgences from time to time – are among the keys to staying fit.

"If I really want something, I don't feel like it's worth it to deprive myself," says Moore, whose weaknesses include french fries, cookies, and pretty much anything containing peanut butter. "I've never said, 'I want to look like this' or 'I want to look like that' or 'I'm not good enough.' ... To me it's about feeling good, feeling healthy."

Moore abandoned all vanity while recording Amanda Leigh, which drops May 26. "I didn't have to wear makeup or feel like I had to present myself to anybody," says Moore, who often stayed in her PJs all day while co-writing and recording the eclectic, '70s-inspired collection of songs at a friend's home near Boston. "I loved it."

Moore, who wed Adams, 34, in a quiet ceremony in March, cautions that the beauty standards set by Hollywood are unattainable – even for celebrities themselves.

"[As a star] you have professionals who make you look a certain way ... I can't roll out of bed and look that way," says Moore. "I'm very comfortable with the way that I look, but it's not fair for women to use someone or something as a bar. It's not reality, for anyone. I am happy to be myself and represent something different for women."

I love her tbh. So ONTD, are you happy with your weight? How often do you exercise? Have you ever been on diet?

I'm on a Snapple Diet and I've lost 6 lbs in the spand of 4 days, but I wouldn't recommend it. :o

i've always been pretty naturally thin so i've never dieted and i don't exercise. i'm so out of shape though lol :'(
calcified 21st-May-2009 04:51 pm (UTC)
Same, I'll probably die early from poor nutrition and limited exercise, but at least I'll be thin...
demented_21 21st-May-2009 05:10 pm (UTC)
I loled.
bingeweek 21st-May-2009 09:22 pm (UTC)
same. its so hard to keep a healthy diet when it doesnt really show on the outside, as horrible as that sounds.
oxyj3nn 21st-May-2009 04:57 pm (UTC)
i can't walk up a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing. the only exercise i've got is walking to class and one semester of pilates.

but yay for being naturally thin.
miss_pants 21st-May-2009 05:07 pm (UTC)
me too. I used to do yoga like 5 times a week, but I never have the energy/time anymore. By the time I get home from work and get my son fed/bathed/in bed, I just want to sit on the couch & do nothing more for the rest of the evening.
misstwirly 21st-May-2009 06:00 pm (UTC)
same here! i've started exercising recently though.
drankmywar 21st-May-2009 08:01 pm (UTC)
I wish I was naturally thin, I'm more like naturally average lol.

when your metabolism slows down you will gain weight
so you should get into the habit now

jesstorious 21st-May-2009 03:37 pm (UTC)
what is the snapple diet? I am on a low-cal diet. Iphone users, I recommend the free application- lose it! if you're dieting, its amazing.
feverously 21st-May-2009 03:39 pm (UTC)
lol, it's me drinking snapple and nothing else. i probably should have explained a little further. i really jacked up the inside of my mouth after one of my silver crowns fell off. anytime i ate solid foods i'd tear up my gums. it got so bad that i tore the back of throat. so i can't really swallow or chew anything until it heals.

i should be drinking protein shakes like ensure or boost, but they taste like poop, so i'm sticking to snapple.
kayren_xd 21st-May-2009 03:55 pm (UTC)
omg haha that sounds awful

..but 6 pounds in four days huh? hmmm... ;)

glamour_bombs_ 21st-May-2009 03:37 pm (UTC)
i;ve been hitting the gym every day for about 2 weeks now and im sooo sore still. i steadily gained like 10 lbs over college ..but its been feeling good!! i know the South Beach Diet works best for me. last time i did it i lost like 20 lbs and kept it off..well until college..
laurenjennifer 21st-May-2009 04:03 pm (UTC)
ugh, i feel you about the gym. i've worked out every day for 1 1/2 weeks and i needed a break because i thought my hamstrings were going to snap.

i'm not going today, but i'm still biking around to all my errands :X
dinkydo 21st-May-2009 03:37 pm (UTC)
I'm on about day 14 of the Horse Face 3000 Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred. I can see a difference in my body and I've lost at least 6 pounds doing it. I'm also in the middle of doing the Couch to 5k (on week 5) but I've had to slow that down because my knees were getting sore from over use.

Since the Shred is still kicking my ass all over the living room, I'm considering continuing doing it after the 30 days is up. It's only 30 minutes a day and when it's over I feel SO MUCH BETTER. yay endorphins.
itsjoelle 21st-May-2009 03:39 pm (UTC)
Keep it up bb! You are doing great <3.
dinkydo 21st-May-2009 04:21 pm (UTC)
thanks bb! It's amazing the difference it's made in my legs already!
supervictoria64 21st-May-2009 03:41 pm (UTC)
YAY 30 Day Shred. I love that. I'm doing it now, too. Congratulations on losing six pounds! Keep it up!
clarelove 21st-May-2009 03:44 pm (UTC)
Ok I need help. LOL Can anyone suggest how to keep my huge boobs DOWN?! It's killing me when I do jumping jacks. And I'm already wearing two training bras to keep 'em down.

HELP?
neko_oni 21st-May-2009 03:52 pm (UTC)
Yeah, man! I just started that. Such an ass kicker.

I am happy to hear you've seen an improvement already.
laureanimation 21st-May-2009 04:00 pm (UTC)
i'm relatively in shape, but i wanna order that dvd! i've heard it's wonderful!
story84 21st-May-2009 04:03 pm (UTC)
do you need "equipment" to do the shred? (ie dumbbells, weights, ropes, etc etc)
I've heard so much about it on ONTD...i'm veeery tempted to buy it now.
waterylights 21st-May-2009 04:15 pm (UTC)
i'm on day 8 of the 30 day shred and it's amazing what a difference i feel already, mentally and physically. i love love love it.
thelovegetaway 21st-May-2009 04:24 pm (UTC)
I'm starting it tonight; I'm scurred.
bombasticlove_x 21st-May-2009 04:24 pm (UTC)
i want to kill jillian michaels every time i turn this dvd on. i used to do this + running + 8 min abs but i got so lazy after 2 weeks that i stopped. sometimes i feel like 20 min a day isn't enough but is it really working? have you changed your diet at all? i should start doing it again.
eternalliterati 21st-May-2009 04:28 pm (UTC)
god, i wish i could get through the 30 day shred. 5 minutes in i feel like i'm going to die. i have no endurance/stamina, though.
bellarose16 21st-May-2009 04:35 pm (UTC)
I'm hoping to try the 30 Day Shred today or tomorrow! I've heard so many great things about it that I thought I'd give it a shot. My roommate was doing it consistently for about two weeks, and then suddenly stopped. But she did enjoy it a lot. I normally just do a few weeks of Pilates whenever I want to tone up a bit, but I could use something new to keep myself from getting bored or hitting a plateau. And I'll be on a beach in Hawaii in a month, so I've got to get this body ready!

P.S. Thanks for the free YouTube link!
love_alice 21st-May-2009 05:48 pm (UTC)
ahh i just started the shred a few days ago... my thighs are screaming at me today. they don't want to sit and be prone but walking is also a problem.
drankmywar 21st-May-2009 08:09 pm (UTC)
I have had the dvd since December and I still haven't done a single work out from it :/

Since it seems to actually really work I should def. start it already, my goal is to get down to 110.... I have 34 pounds to go.
drankmywar 21st-May-2009 08:10 pm (UTC)
Also I have a question, does it put any strain on the hips? I was born with dhd and I've been having a lot of hip pain lately, I don't want to make it worse.
babydiego 21st-May-2009 03:37 pm (UTC)
snapple diet? wtf
ive got a slight tummy so id like to get rid of that and overall tone up. waiting for my 1st new job paycheck to join the gym :]
feverously 21st-May-2009 03:40 pm (UTC)

wooow. how much snapple a day? arent you having mad hunger pangs?
hjalmartazar 21st-May-2009 03:37 pm (UTC)
I'm pretty happy with my weight. I wish my boobs were bigger to balance out my hips, but I definitely like having an ass, lol. When I put on weight, it goes straight to my ass and to my arms. I hate having big arms. That's the only thing I would change.
stellar_ball 21st-May-2009 04:18 pm (UTC)
Same here, I wouldn't mind my hips if my boobs helped even it out. But at the same time I don't mind my itty bitty titties.
subj_to_debate 21st-May-2009 10:07 pm (UTC)
oh see, i have a chest but hardly a butt! i used to have one, but then something went awry. though, i wouldn't mind if my chest shrunk a bit.
kaleesucks 22nd-May-2009 06:54 pm (UTC)
dude, i feel ya. fat arms run in my family, and they SUCK.
i can't lose the fat on them worth shit, either. i swear i'm gonna liposuction that shit out.

likegunfire 21st-May-2009 03:42 pm (UTC)
"The 24-year-old pop singer has reportedly been estranged from her mother, Stacy Moore, ever since the middle-aged woman came out as a lesbian last March.

Mandy was devastated when Stacy dumped her dad, Don, and moved in with her female lover earlier this year.

“When Mandy’s mom came out as a lesbian and took up with Claudette Laliberte, Mandy felt betrayed,” a Star Magazine blabs.

The snitch adds, “She always believed that her mom and dad were happy and that her mom was straight. Now she has no idea what to believe and feels as if she’s been lied to her entire life.”

The turmoil between Mandy and her mom has the actress/singer threatening to boycott her older brother’s upcoming wedding."

lol I know it's probably not true, but I don't like her, so I will choose to believe it.
