Does X-Men Origins: Magneto have a new director?

The roaring debut of X-Men Origins: Wolverine has been the launchpad for several other spin-offs getting the green light.

We've heard about a second Wolverine film, a Deadpool movie and a Gambit spin-off. And it now seems there is new movement on X-Men Origins: Magneto, a project that would explore the backstory of the magnetically-powered archvillain played in the X-Men trilogy by Ian McKellen.

Sources are now saying that James McTeigue is in negotiations to direct the movie, instead of David S. Goyer. And Internet Movie Database confirms this, with its listing for McTeigue saying he is in talks to take on Magneto.

As I mentioned yesterday, McTeigue is apparently also being sought to take on the Conan remake after Brett Ratner left the director's chair so it will be interesting to see which project he opts for, or whether he is able to do both. At one point, Children of Men director Alfonso Cuaron was also rumoured as a candidate for helming Magneto.

Sheldon Turner wrote the original screenplay for the Magneto film and when Goyer came on board he reworked it. He was also set to direct but has several other film projects on his plate including a movie sequel to H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man. Fox may now be looking at other directors in order to get moving on the project.

I've seen the Goyer script and it was reasonably good - the dynamic and dialogue between Magneto and Xavier was spot on.

But it also had some questionable elements, as was suggested by a previous commenter on here at the time I reviewed the script. For instance, the story included a Nazi mad scientist experimenting on Magneto and other mutants to try to harness their abilities. We've now seen that already with Stryker in the Wolverine movie.

In the script, Magneto's wife Magda dies in a fire started by a mob - whereas in the comics it plays out differently: Magneto saves Magda by revealing his powers and using them against the mob (although he is unable to save their daughter) but Magda then flees in terror at his display of destructive force.

That hurtful rejection for being different adds to the Holocaust in being another part of what shapes his character. It also leaves his wife to go on and give birth to the mutant twins Pietro aka Quicksilver (who we appear to see in Wolverine as one of the captives at Stryker's base) and Wanda aka Scarlet Witch. You can see Quicksilver on the right in the image below from the Wolverine movie. (Article continues below image)

Without a mad scientist experimenting on him at Auschwitz, Magneto would need another, better motivation to become a terrorist. Here's where we could see the later, post-war capture, abuse and enslavement of mutants by another entity.

Possible candidates from the source material might be: the Nazi terrorist group Hydra (which features in the comic book origin of Magneto); the mutant-enslaving advanced nation Genosha, which could perhaps be shown trading mutants for its technology; or the elite society The Helllfire Club with its mutant-hunting robots called Sentinels.

Any of those could feature in the film as a powerful corporation working for the government (or a collection of several governments, similar to the UN) to resolve the mutant 'problem.' For instance, in the comics, the government purchased Sentinels from The Hellfire Club for its Project Wideawake initiative to capture mutants.

And perhaps a dramatic moment could see Magneto finding out that one or more of the 'Dr Death' characters from the Nazi prison camps were now working for the corporation. Terrorism usually results from a reaction to the ongoing policies of a system in power, so it would need to go far beyond what the Nazis were doing during the war. The Nazis just sowed the seeds of hate in Magneto's mind; continued mutant exploitation would be needed for his hate and distrust to spill over into a life of anti-government villainy and terrorism.

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently confirmed that internal discussions were taking place about the Magneto movie. Now we just need some more official news on the progress of this project...

[info]doop 12th-May-2009 02:25 pm (UTC)
I know she was meant to be Psylocke, but did they ever actually call her that in the film?

If they didn't, they could always just say it wasn't her (especially since Psylocke isn't Asian in the comics anymore).

Omg... this this this.

[info]razor2rozary 12th-May-2009 01:43 pm (UTC)
Gambit should be in this. They could explore the whole Joseph/Rogue/Gambit love triangle.
[info]paradisus 12th-May-2009 01:49 pm (UTC)
FUCK ROMY! That shit can DIAF.

I hate that shipdom and the pairing makes not fucking sense even after years of reading that ridiculous relationship.

Gimme Magneto/Rogue instead.
[info]razor2rozary 12th-May-2009 01:55 pm (UTC)
WTF, best mutant love story ever: they're star-crossed and doomed from the get-go, you just have to root for them. And all they do is bicker and fight (it's entertaining ok), yet you know there's depth in there somewhere beneath all the bravado and resistance (think back to the trial of Gambit). And how cute are they kissing through their space helmets?

I'm all for Joseph/Rogue, if it makes Gambit all jealous and shit.
[info]earthquake 12th-May-2009 01:47 pm (UTC)
I... don't know how to feel about this.

I'm always excited about comic book movies because COMIC BOOK MOVIES! But then, they usually end up being shitty, shitty films.
[info]capitalized 12th-May-2009 01:48 pm (UTC)
too many origins. wolverine already stars in the regular x films he doesn't need another origin film. the magneto one sounds like it'd be a good movie but not entertaining to me personally. and idgaf about gambit or deadpool, i just want another team film. no school or kids just a team of about 10 with actual costumes and stuff that sticks to the real stories.
[info]paradisus 12th-May-2009 01:49 pm (UTC)
Oh I can't wait to see this.

I love Magneto
[info]melina_agape 12th-May-2009 01:52 pm (UTC)
IF IT'S NOT BRYAN SINGER, THEY CAN FUCK OFF.
[info]jesusnachos 12th-May-2009 02:00 pm (UTC)
ia. i think they are good friends and work together well as seen in the first 2 x-mens and apt pupil
[info]paradisus 12th-May-2009 02:02 pm (UTC)
I heard they weren't so good friends after they started doing the X-Men movies because Bryan didn't want to participate in the Gay parties that Ian & Alan Cumming would through. I'm probably wrong but I could have sworn there was an article written about it.
[info]paradisus 12th-May-2009 02:02 pm (UTC)
Yup yup, only Singer can write and direct these films with magic and understanding. He leaves alot for everyone to enjoy.

[info]zigazazu 12th-May-2009 01:57 pm (UTC)
a gambit spin off? really???
now dont just say that or else you will break my innocent foolish heart
[info]popcornfartv1 12th-May-2009 07:49 pm (UTC)
i think it's still rumor but it seems most likely that they'll do one since gambit was so popular.
[info]must_go_faster 12th-May-2009 01:57 pm (UTC)
This movie honestly doesn't need 23948023457 mutant cameos, just Magneto and Professor X (and maybe Mystique). If we've learned anything from previous X-Men movies then it's that acting > random-ass 20 second long cameos.
[info]gunslingers 12th-May-2009 01:58 pm (UTC)
no. focus on a decent film featuring all the x-men (and wipe out the memory of the previous shitty ones) THEN focus on the origins.

goddamn. JUST LET ME DIRECT A FILM.
[info]neko_oni 12th-May-2009 01:58 pm (UTC)
Just bring on more Gambit and I don't give a fuck.
[info]b_mckinley 12th-May-2009 01:59 pm (UTC)
I don't really care for a Magneto story
[info]guadalcanal 12th-May-2009 02:09 pm (UTC)
I don't know but if they fuck up Magento I will cut a bitch
[info]bloody_hell 12th-May-2009 02:10 pm (UTC)
I wish they'd redo the whole X-Men film series. I hated what they did to a lot of the characters. Especially Phoenix, Rogue, Angel, Storm, and Psylocke.
[info]guadalcanal 12th-May-2009 02:20 pm (UTC)
iawtc
my friend and I have decided we're gonna pull a Peter Jackson and redo the whole X-Men film series when he gets out of film school
[info]la_geni 12th-May-2009 03:02 pm (UTC)
Yes, do it!...and redo the Harry Potter series while you're at it. lolz
[info]fantasma_arto 13th-May-2009 02:02 am (UTC)
That would be so awesome if you do that!
[info]capitalized 12th-May-2009 02:23 pm (UTC)
i agree, i liked cyclops, prof x and wolverine casting but they really need a new jean, rogue and storm.
