Peter Doherty in swine flu scare?

...Or are websites simply making the most out of the predicted flu pandemic?

Several news websites have published stories fearing for Pete Doherty's safety, after a picture was found online of the Babyshambles singer hugging a swine flu victim.

Scottish newspapers today (April 28) named Dawn Askham from Falkirk as one of the first UK sufferers to be confirmed as having the bug, which the World Health Organisation say could be on the verge of transforming into a global pandemic, reports BBC News.

In a story about the outbreak, Stv.tv published a picture of Askham cuddling up to Doherty, obtained from her Bebo page.

An unnamed source told Femalefirst.co.uk, who have also covered the story, that Doherty's friends were apparently concerned for his welfare.

"Pete's friends are worried he may have the deadly illness. He has got himself clean of drugs, the last thing he needs is this," the source is quoted as saying.

However, the picture of Doherty and Askham does not look at all recent, which would suggest that the singer is actually unlikely to be in any more danger of contracting the illness than any other healthy UK citizen at present.

It's okay bb...I read an article this morning that the world is FAR from a global pandemic (that would mean millions dead, schools closed, etc). The death toll is in the hundreds, and the U.S. has been prepared for this since the bird flu (which has claimed way more lives than swine flu). We'll be a ok!

They already have tests and treatments for this so for the next couple weeks or months just be cautious and if you get sick get checked out. It's not like if you get it you die instantly. This tends to happen when doctors don't know a lot about a new disease because nobody knows a whole lot about the illness or if it has weird symptoms. If you live within a day of a hospital (you know, in case of the worst) and have a relatively good immune system, you will be fine.

Not particularly. The CDC website said that in 1976 of 200 infected people only one died. And the most likely causes of death are from already existing conditions exacerbated by the flu. I mean, I guess if you become deathly ill and don't seek attention, then it can be deadly, but they have medicines for it.

Well I think they were saying as long as it's been more than like 2-6 days or something and you have no symptoms you're probably fine. So if they're not already sick, they won't get sick.

The media needs to be fucking ashamed of the job it's done covering all this.

Several points:

The people it's killed, it killed through Pneumonia.

Outside of Mexico, it is being caught quicker and is treatable with flu medication.

Whilst it is contagious, people also die from REGULAR flu all the time!
