'SquareButt' Burger King Hip-Hop Ad Under Fire.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rm6d2oy8GRk

Fast food giant Burger King and Seattle, Washington rapper Sir-Mix-A-lot have come under fire for a Hip-Hop commercial featuring Nickelodeon character SpongeBob.

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood is taking Burger King and Nickelodeon Television President Cyma Zarghami to task over the “SpongeBob SquareButt” commercial.

The spot features Sir-Mix-A-Lot reinterpreting his hit 1990 song “Baby Got Back” with new lyrics that start “I like Square Butts and I cannot Lie.” The lyrics spoof the original song and feature Mix-A-Lot flanked by two scantily clad women on each arm.

Additionally, Burger King’s mascot, The King, is seen dancing along with women gyrating, cut with images of SpongeBob dancing.

At the end of the :30 second spot, Sir-Mix-A-Lot himself quips "booty is booty!"

More than 2,600 CCFC members have written to Nickelodeon and Burger King in the past 48 hours, complaining about the commercial, which promotes Burger King’s Kids Meals.

“Parents deserve to know whether Nickelodeon—the most popular children’s television network—signed off on the use of SpongeBob in a commercial that celebrates lechery and objectifies women,” CCFC director Dr. Susan Linn told AllHipHop.com in an emailed statement.

The advertisement ran during Monday Night’s Men’s NCAA Championship and has aired on several other stations since.

Burger King has stated that the ad was aimed at adults when it originally debuted on the West Coast at 6:00 PM during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

In their letter, CCFC acknowledged that Burger King was after publicity, but questioned the decisions of Nickelodeon’s top brass.

“We wonder why a children’s television station like Nickelodeon would want to link one of its most popular and profitable characters to this sort of lechery and objectification of women,” the CCFC letter reads. “That’s why we are asking if you approved the use of SpongeBob in this commercial (and the longer Internet viral video, which is frankly even more disturbing).”

Ms. Cyma Zarghami,
President Nickelodeon Television
1515 Broadway New York, NY 10036

SENT VIA FAX

Dear Ms. Zarghami, We are writing to ask whether you or anyone at Nickelodeon approved the new “SpongeBob SquareButt” television commercial that is currently airing for Burger King Kids Meals. As you are probably aware, more than 2,600 members of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood have asked Nickelodeon and Burger King to pull the commercial.

It’s bad enough when a character popular with children, like SpongeBob SquarePants, is used to promote junk food, but it’s absolutely egregious when that character simultaneously promotes objectified, sexualized images of women.

Yesterday, Burger King responded via a marketing trade publication to complaints about the ad. While their response was disingenuous – they claimed the ad for Kids Meals featuring SpongeBob was aimed at adults – at least they responded. We suspect Burger King, which positions itself as an edgier alternative to other fast food chains, actually welcomes the publicity from this controversy.

But we wonder why a children’s television station like Nickelodeon would want to link one of its most popular and profitable characters to this sort of lechery and objectification of women. That’s why we are asking if you approved the use of SpongeBob in this commercial (and the longer Internet viral video, which is frankly even more disturbing).

If you did – and do – approve, is this part of a new trend at Nickelodeon? Is there a plan at Nickelodeon to make your most famous characters edgier in order to maintain their appeal to children as they grow up?

We can’t help but notice the connection between this ad and the new tween Dora doll, which will distinguish itself from earlier incarnations of Dora by focusing on fashion and her appearance. We think parents of children who watch your programming would appreciate hearing answers to these questions.

We are attaching an email from the mother of two young children who were watching the NCAA championship when the ad was aired. We look forward to your response, and would be happy to discuss our members concerns with you.

Sincerely,

Susan Linn

Director, CCFC

tbh I even thought it was a little raunchy for a children's commercial.
[info]iheartchem 15th-Apr-2009 03:44 pm (UTC)
I know, right? Commercials are so in-your-face these days. By the time our kids have kids, it's going to be like, "Buy our product, BITCH."
[info]everythingonit 15th-Apr-2009 03:58 pm (UTC)
Well, I mean, have you seen that Shamwow commerical where the guy is like, Back the fuck up -oh wait, that's not real.

D;

ia. Square butted women dancing to Baby Got Back and kid's meals with plastic Spongebob toys don't go together imo.

I was told the commercial was targeted to 12-25 year old males and the point was just to "create buzz" and not necessarily sell. Still stupid, but, it definitely is creating buzz for sure.

I agree. It's too much.

[info]dragonblk17 15th-Apr-2009 06:58 pm (UTC)

[info]ex_jughoood 15th-Apr-2009 03:44 pm (UTC)
rofl omg this would be kinda inappropriate even for a regular commercial, but its for a fucking KIDS COMMERCIAL?!?! wow its actually really interesting to watch the decline in our society/media tbh.

[info]grammaire 15th-Apr-2009 03:47 pm (UTC)
Actually scratch that, that was probably the point.
[info]azalea_breeze 15th-Apr-2009 03:46 pm (UTC)
I thought it was amusing, but it's definitely inappropriate for a kids commercial.

[info]micron_maven 15th-Apr-2009 03:47 pm (UTC)
lol who cares.
This song is so old and corny, I always hear it at house parties with corny ass kids like Asher Roth trying to be cool and rap every single word.
[info]anidee 15th-Apr-2009 03:49 pm (UTC)
LOL so true
[info]shopaholics 15th-Apr-2009 03:57 pm (UTC)

[info]lil_creamsoda 15th-Apr-2009 03:47 pm (UTC)
I think they should attack those dumb ass hardees commercials, too.

now those commercials are sexist.

and also hardees is gross as shit so...double offensive.
[info]eiramardnassac 15th-Apr-2009 03:51 pm (UTC)
what is hardes? i saw that commercial with that girl, but isn't it carls jr?
im so confused.
[info]_say_goodnight 15th-Apr-2009 03:56 pm (UTC)
Hardee's is pretty much Carl's jr.
[info]lil_creamsoda 15th-Apr-2009 04:01 pm (UTC)
same company, diff name.

idk I think it's carl's jr for the west coast, and hardees everywhere else? not sure.
[info]bob80 15th-Apr-2009 04:04 pm (UTC)
It is Carl Jr's on the West Coast, it is Hardees on the East Coast.
[info]noitall_herm 15th-Apr-2009 05:02 pm (UTC)
same thing..
[info]generationlol 15th-Apr-2009 06:17 pm (UTC)
Like everyone said, they're the same, and the name switches over for no reason in the middle of the country. It's Hardee's in Arkansas and Carl's Jr. as soon as you cross the border to Oklahoma.
[info]pandaklr 15th-Apr-2009 03:56 pm (UTC)
i rolled up to a hardees drive thru, asked for a minute to look at the menu, looked at the menu and drove away. wtf. they suck.
[info]girlwhosmiles 15th-Apr-2009 06:18 pm (UTC)
THIS.
[info]simpleyetcolin 15th-Apr-2009 03:48 pm (UTC)
i'm just glad it's come to the point where the television has to parent kids, instead of, you know, the parents.
[info]eleven59 15th-Apr-2009 03:53 pm (UTC)
That's the problem I with it too.
[info]ex_jughoood 15th-Apr-2009 03:52 pm (UTC)
how are you supposed to parent your kid when it comes to something like this? not allow them to watch tv after school? every kid watches tv, its inevitable they will see this commerical. get tivo and cut out all the commercials? all the kids will laugh at him at school for having lame parents.

you cant just throw out whatever you want out there and then say parents have to shoulder 100% of the responsibility.
[info]bleakberry 15th-Apr-2009 03:48 pm (UTC)
lol the extras at the back reminds me of Girlicious.
