KANYE'S SPEECH

"I hate the way they portray us in the media. We see a black family that says they're looting. We see a white family that says they're looking for food & you know it's been five days because most of the people are black & even for me to complain about I would be a hyprocrite because I try to turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I'm calling my business manager right now to see what's the biggest amount that I can give. And just to imagine if I was down there, those are my people down there, so anybody out there that wants to do anything with the setup the way America is setup to help the poor, the black people, the less well off as slow as possible. I mean the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize that a lot of the people that can help are at war right now fighting another way and they've given them permission to go down & shoot us."

Near the end he comments, "George Bush doesn't care about black people." The look on Mike Myers' face is priceless.

[info]mangosadness 3rd-Sep-2005 02:33 am (UTC)
man, he is soooooooooo right
[info]lauralea 3rd-Sep-2005 07:34 am (UTC)
Not quite. You can tell the looters apart from those looking for food VERY easily. The looters are carrying stolen guns and 5634543 boxes of nikes. Those foraging for food are carrying, well, food. It would also help if Kanye got his facts straight. Most of the refugees are black because 70% of New Orleans is black. There are a lot of posts about it in my LJ, with a lot of my views and many debates between me and my friends in the comments. Have a look and join in if you want.
[info]mangosadness 3rd-Sep-2005 01:47 pm (UTC)
Well, I think his point is that the media is call calling black people, who probably are lootiing "looters" and characterizing the whites, who are probably doing the same thing, as "looking for food" and "proviiding for their young". Do you see the stark difference in the tone. I am not condoning the behavior of ANYONE, but dont make black out the be the criminals when the whites are guilty of the EXACT same thing.
[info]local_celeb 3rd-Sep-2005 02:34 am (UTC)
I love Kanye. Thanks for posting this.
[info]sarahleelee 3rd-Sep-2005 02:34 am (UTC)
Who's the racist here?
[info]_82ndstreet 3rd-Sep-2005 02:40 am (UTC)
not him...
[info]sarahleelee 3rd-Sep-2005 02:46 am (UTC)
There's no need to make this all about "blacks" and "whites". It's about people.

It's silly to waste time blathering on about such things while there are people who need help. It was not the time, nor the place.
[info]_plastica 3rd-Sep-2005 03:40 am (UTC)
I think that you need to stop living in lalaland saraleelee and realize as much as you'd love to say its all about the people!!! racisim and discrimination still exists as ohnotheydidnt displays everyday!

and OMG kanye west actually said something instead of being a puppet! OMG THE WORLD IS OOOOVEEER I CANT BELIEVE HE SAID THAT!!

shut up, please.
[info]tiajuanabible 3rd-Sep-2005 03:45 am (UTC)
nobody doesnt like sarahleelee!
[info]andwe_explode 3rd-Sep-2005 04:35 am (UTC)
Black people can't be racist because they don't benefit from a system of oppression based on skin color.
[info]spampy 3rd-Sep-2005 04:53 am (UTC)
gee, i don't know. kanye wasn't the governor who resisted giving the death penalty to a bunch of racist thugs who dragged a black man across a texas highway to death for fun. i could point out other things, but apparently you're too worried about the price of gas to care.
[info]break_theradio 3rd-Sep-2005 05:46 am (UTC)
Um... still George Bush.
[info]geoantada 3rd-Sep-2005 06:51 pm (UTC)
Kanye West is.
[info]loveisink68 3rd-Sep-2005 07:01 pm (UTC)
My thoughts exactly.
[info]ayoria 3rd-Sep-2005 02:34 am (UTC)
blah.
[info]syndicalist 3rd-Sep-2005 02:35 am (UTC)
Poor guy, you can tell he's upset and trying to deal with all the emotions he's feeling. And what he says at the end -- I fucking agree with him, but I'd expand it to say poor people in general, though I think Dubya is definitely a racist.
[info]bree019 3rd-Sep-2005 02:41 am (UTC)
I'd extend it to anyone who makes under $200,000/year.
[info]gettyupcowboy 3rd-Sep-2005 02:44 am (UTC)
nawh it's more or less people who make under $125,000/year but it's true. Even though my parents are up in this rage a lot of people don't want to help poor people because they think they are a menance to society.
[info]ranata 3rd-Sep-2005 04:33 am (UTC)
but I'd expand it to say poor people in general

and that wouldn't be accurate. he said black people and it's true, he doesn't care about black people because that is all that is primarily left in the city. let's just be honest and not sugarcoat it because "poor people" wouldn't be accurate in this situation. it's the color that comes first.
[info]alittledream 3rd-Sep-2005 05:52 am (UTC)
so bush discriminates against condoleeza rice?

[info]kaedemoon267 3rd-Sep-2005 03:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, ok, that's why he was hugging and crying with black kids and their families. If he didn't care, he wouldn't even be there. The government is just such an easy target to blame. Shame.
[info]isachi 4th-Sep-2005 04:53 am (UTC)
...I love the arguments here. How does one prove that one is not racist exactly? Simple, there is no way to no matter how good of a person you are. Cynicism in this country have created social witch trails out of "racism" that overshadow the true injustices in our society to the point where actual crimes are ignored in favor of taking down the politician of choice.

Always reminds me of the George Burrough story. (For those of you who don't remember it) He recited the Lord's Pray perfectly without the slightest hesitation, something witches according to the authorities on the subject could never do ... they hanged him anyway. Bush could carry on perfect behavior that no racist could accomplish and someone would create some reason why it doesn't count. Once accused there is no way to prove your innocence, you get hanged.
[info]ncsujen 5th-Sep-2005 01:56 am (UTC)
THANK YOU.
It's not that he "doesn't care about black people" it's that he "doesn't care about POOR people".

I'm not black, but I am poor, and if the hurricane was headed my way I wouldn't be able to evacuate either. So I'd be sitting there waiting for some damn help too and it wouldn't matter one way or another what the color of my skin was.
[info]xx_t_o_m_ 3rd-Sep-2005 02:36 am (UTC)
He's speaking the truth.
[info]decayingstars 3rd-Sep-2005 04:34 am (UTC)
yeah.
[info]espressoshot 3rd-Sep-2005 05:15 am (UTC)

and the truth goes uncensored for once.
[info]xsofa_magoo 3rd-Sep-2005 07:58 am (UTC)
there was probably mass hysteria
[info]malloryrenee 3rd-Sep-2005 02:36 am (UTC)
I want to kiss Mike Meyers he looks so adorably uncomfortable.
I didn't really understand why Kayne said what he said but I'm sure he will explain it later.
[info]5fingerdismount 3rd-Sep-2005 02:40 am (UTC)
I didn't really understand why Kayne said what he said but I'm sure he will explain it later.

Yeah, he's going to cut a track about it on his next album, Diploma C. The song will have two videos, guest starring J-Christ.
[info]allthingsgood 3rd-Sep-2005 04:37 am (UTC)
You're so funny. Roflmao.
[info]syndicalist 3rd-Sep-2005 02:49 am (UTC)
He said it because it's true and needs to be said, I'm sure. Bush is a racist. The Idiot Man-Child from texas does not give two figs for anyone who is poor of any race, but he seems to have a hard-on for non white poor folks.
[info]_heartcrash 3rd-Sep-2005 05:21 am (UTC)
he seemed very emotional and clearly mike meyers is a lot better at improvisational speaking than kanye.. i think it was just a thing that he blurted out in the middle of the emotion and probably even regrets saying whether it be true or not.
[info]hellarad 3rd-Sep-2005 02:37 am (UTC)
um, is it just me or does he not make any sense?
[info]kkglam 3rd-Sep-2005 02:38 am (UTC)
I thought it was just me..but I'm also kind of drunk out of my dasm mind right lnow.
[info]fromforeignfilm 3rd-Sep-2005 03:29 am (UTC)
you get drunk and come on ontd and comment? haha
[info]dearday 3rd-Sep-2005 02:38 am (UTC)
i had trouble trying to understand him when i was watching that on tv
[info]bree019 3rd-Sep-2005 02:40 am (UTC)
It's not just you. It sounded like babbling, however true it might have been.
[info]nattiecakes 3rd-Sep-2005 03:14 am (UTC)
It's not just you. I love Kanye but I think he was a little too emotional to make sense there.
[info]mandy0x 3rd-Sep-2005 03:22 am (UTC)
I'm glad I'm not alone.
[info]_whore_island 3rd-Sep-2005 04:45 am (UTC)
You're talking about Bush, right?
[info]metatron_lvr 3rd-Sep-2005 06:56 pm (UTC)
no, he's such a horrible speaker. that MTV interview made me feel bad for him because he was obviously trying really hard to sound intelligent. nice goin kanye.
[info]kkglam 3rd-Sep-2005 02:37 am (UTC)
[info]kool_aidex893 3rd-Sep-2005 02:38 am (UTC)

[info]dearday 3rd-Sep-2005 02:38 am (UTC)

[info]kkglam 3rd-Sep-2005 02:39 am (UTC)
Damn sweetie..That is one bitchin icon. Can I add you?
[info]dearday 3rd-Sep-2005 02:41 am (UTC)
yeah.
[info]electronically 3rd-Sep-2005 08:46 pm (UTC)
He's talking about how instead of really sending any kind of aid they've most recently sent armed men with ak47s and the Louisiana governor made a comment to the effect that that these people would take care of the problem there. They had guns and weren't afraid to use them. Stuff like that.

[info]sarah_stanley 3rd-Sep-2005 02:38 am (UTC)
That's a pretty bold statement to make. Mike Myers looked like he was freaked out a little bit, like "Do you know how people are going to respond to that?"

Anyway, he (Kanye) is not entirely wrong.
[info]drugsheep 3rd-Sep-2005 03:30 am (UTC)
the problem is that the truth is so fucking painful people don't want to believe that black people aren't seen as human. there's a reason this was allowed to happen to new orleans and the reason is because it's population is so highly black.
[info]lareinadeluz 3rd-Sep-2005 10:01 pm (UTC)
allowed? dude, it was a natural disaster. if there is *anyone* to blame offhand, its the mayor of new orleans for not caring enough to get all the people who couldnt afford to leave out of there, and newsflash: he's black. there are *a lot* of people doing everything they can to help the victims of this tragedy, so get off your high horse and donate some money or something.
[info]teenagexheart 3rd-Sep-2005 11:07 pm (UTC)
...What?

Like W was really sitting back, rubbing his hands together diabolically and saying "OOH, WE'RE GONNA GET RID OF ALL THEM DARN COLORED FOLK!!" Yes, it is ridiculous that it has taken so long for people to receive help, and it is tragic that so many people were not able to evacuate. But it's not as if they had this evil scheme to wipe New Orleans off the map because most of the population is black. What Bush can be blamed for is sucking money from projects to strengthen levees - a storm as powerful as Katrina had been predicted to hit the area years ago. Had the levees been strengthened, the damage might now have been quite as catastrophic.
[info]rightkindaphase 3rd-Sep-2005 02:38 am (UTC)
well i live "down there" and if you're actually here you'd understand it's not like that.
[info]kidviciousdonna 3rd-Sep-2005 02:39 am (UTC)
what is it like?
[info]rightkindaphase 3rd-Sep-2005 02:44 am (UTC)
freakin crazy, my friend got car jacked last night. there is no reason for people to be acting like that. I was living in NO but i'm at my parents house in BR and i have people living here with me and every grocery store is slammed and there is no gas anywhere. it's like a war zone. This has nothing to do with race or class. it has to do with civil unrest.
[info]missalynn 3rd-Sep-2005 02:41 am (UTC)
Yeah seriously. I've seen people of every race being directly affected by the hurricane aftermath. It's not a fun place to be, but people like him are throwing gas on the fire when they make ignorant statements like that.
[info]ohmystars__ 3rd-Sep-2005 03:20 am (UTC)
I wish CNN would interview people like you.
[info]invisiblegirl4 3rd-Sep-2005 03:30 am (UTC)
Thank you! I live in MS, and it's definately not a color issue.
[info]gemlikeflame 3rd-Sep-2005 06:46 am (UTC)
Agreed. I live here/"there" too.
[info]phoenix___ 3rd-Sep-2005 02:38 am (UTC)
...dont forget the last thing he said, and I quote "George Bush hates Black people"...right before the camera cut him off.
[info]entityheights 3rd-Sep-2005 02:40 am (UTC)
wrong quote. he said "George Bush doesn't care about Black people"
[info]phoenix___ 3rd-Sep-2005 02:41 am (UTC)
hehe my bad...well it shocked me a bit...but in a good way.
GO on KanYE West.
[info]suburb_fabulous 3rd-Sep-2005 02:41 am (UTC)
He didn't say George Bush hates black people. He said "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Watch the video and see.
[info]syndicalist 3rd-Sep-2005 02:50 am (UTC)
yeah, and he's right.
