Baron Cohen's 'Bruno' Slapped with NC-17 Rating

We've heard a lot about the unbelievably ridiculousness of Sacha Baron Cohen's new mock-gotcha flick Brüno (which is sorta like a sequel to Borat, but with another one of Baron Cohen's over-the-top characters), and so the news that it's received an NC-17 rating upon its first run through the MPAA shouldn't be all that shocking. According to The Wrap, that's exactly what happened -- and it was due to scenes where Baron Cohen (as Brüno, the gay Austrian fashion reporter) "appears to have anal sex with a man on camera." Another "problem scene", according to The Wrap, comes when Cohen "goes on a hunting trip and sneaks naked into the tent of one of the fellow hunters, an unsuspecting non-actor."

Universal confirmed the NC-17 rating by noting: "On its first submission the film did not receive an R but it is far too early to say that there is any struggle to get there as the process is only at its inception." Since Universal won't release a film that's rated NC-17 -- especially because they know this sucker will make a ton of money for them assuming it gets its R rating -- you can bet Baron Cohen will be forced to cut or trim the scenes the MPAA deems not appropriate and leave them for an unrated DVD. So fear not, friends, this will find its way to theaters -- it'll just take a little more time to hash out the ratings snafu. That said, Brüno should still make its July 10 release date.

Looks like they'll be cutting out a bunch of shit since NC-17s are basically unmarketable.

Also, how did they manage to make this movie? Doesn't everyone know him now?
[info]danadanger 30th-Mar-2009 05:32 pm (UTC)
i read a review from a preview screening on aicn earlier this week and they said that yeah, it was obviously a lot harder for him to make this one and a lot of people seem in on the joke. it's still really funny, though, i guess.
[info]lazaro_jack 30th-Mar-2009 05:32 pm (UTC)
he made up a bunch of companies that would appeal to all the interviewees and that all had the same contact info. after he got all the material for the movie he pulled the companies.
[info]boomstick 30th-Mar-2009 06:03 pm (UTC)
I heard that he started filming this one the second Borat was finished so that he'd be less recognizable. I guess he knew that once Borat was out, more Americans would watch Da Ali G show and pick up on who Bruno really was.
[info]_xxtom 30th-Mar-2009 05:30 pm (UTC)
lol of course they'd cut out the scenes.
It's all about the $$$$

[info]danadanger 30th-Mar-2009 05:31 pm (UTC)

[info]lazaro_jack 30th-Mar-2009 05:33 pm (UTC)
lol ikr? I'm always up for some steamy gay sex.
[info]boomstick 30th-Mar-2009 06:03 pm (UTC)
WORD. I'm sure there will be an unrated DVD.
[info]octopus_theater 30th-Mar-2009 05:39 pm (UTC)
Me too... he is/was married, so it's obv not simulated sex, so idk why its such a big deal.

We can show tits and ass in a PG13 movie, but a dick is DNW.

Wtf is that shit.
[info]yoyobrit 30th-Mar-2009 05:32 pm (UTC)

That scene permanently destroyed whatever innocence I retained from childhood.

[info]elasticlimit 30th-Mar-2009 05:48 pm (UTC)
Well if it was from the same company, it must have been R, seeing as they "won't do a NC-17" And I know for sure that seeing Sacha Baron Cohen and a terrifying man wrestle butt naked is going to be hella more disturbing than Sacha Baron Cohen "appearing" (which seems like we don't see it outright) to have anal sec with another man.
[info]evilgmbethy 30th-Mar-2009 06:03 pm (UTC)
hahaha I saw Borat with my mom and my brother and my mom will deny it until her dying breath but she was keeled over laughing at the naked wrestling scene.

[info]watermeloncholy 30th-Mar-2009 05:35 pm (UTC)
Haha, yeah, hypocritical shit...here we go. The MPAA system is so BLAH.

They're going to have to fight this decision...even if that means cutting out some stuff.
[info]grammaire 30th-Mar-2009 05:36 pm (UTC)
Agreed, I wrote a small essay on the MPAA, they're awful.

I hate that a group of like, what, 10 people decides what's okay for an entire country (and beyond) to watch.
[info]watermeloncholy 30th-Mar-2009 05:41 pm (UTC)
Not to mention, it's like a bunch of "normal" Americans (re: mid-west moms with children) who decide ratings and argh, the entire system is such shit.
[info]boomstick 30th-Mar-2009 06:05 pm (UTC)
Seriously, I really want to see this movie to learn more about the joke that is the MPAA.
[info]sonjamillicent 30th-Mar-2009 06:30 pm (UTC)
I could list everything wrong with the MPAA but it would require, well, an essay. Oy.
[info]pin_stripe 30th-Mar-2009 07:11 pm (UTC)
10 totally unknown people too!
[info]eleven59 30th-Mar-2009 05:36 pm (UTC)
I wonder if he's like the South Park guys and just put in really graphic stuff (that wasn't intended to be in the final version) so he could cut it out and get an R rating.
[info]hope_remains 30th-Mar-2009 05:38 pm (UTC)
That would be clever, if so.
[info]watermeloncholy 30th-Mar-2009 05:42 pm (UTC)
lol that would be brilliant if he did that...
[info]evilgmbethy 30th-Mar-2009 06:08 pm (UTC)
the funniest part of the South Park guys putting in the graphic stuff is apparently the MPAA didn't object to the graphic stuff and objected to the milder stuff. Like I remember them saying the original name was, "South Park: All Hell Breaks Loose" and the MPAA had a problem so they countered with, "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" thinking the MPAA would hate it and they were like, "okay that's good."
[info]hope_remains 30th-Mar-2009 05:36 pm (UTC)
This stuff makes me so frustrated. HELLO. NUDITY HAPPENS. WE WERE BORN NAKED. WE ALL KNOW WHAT THE NAKED BODY OF BOTH GENDERS LOOKS LIKE. I'm so sick of this shit being taboo.
[info]dudebritneeee 30th-Mar-2009 05:37 pm (UTC)
If the movie industry isn't pumping out remakes by the dozens THIS is the shit that we come up with on our own?
[info]watermeloncholy 30th-Mar-2009 05:45 pm (UTC)
This shit being Bruno or this shit being the craptastic ratings that movies suffer because people can't get past the word "fuck" and nudity?
[info]dudebritneeee 30th-Mar-2009 05:47 pm (UTC)
This Bruno movie.Personally, I don't give a shit if a movie has an NC-17 rating. John Waters gets NC-17 ratings all the time with good reason<3
[info]evilgmbethy 30th-Mar-2009 06:09 pm (UTC)
w/e Bruno is hilarious
[info]malicesbbgurls 30th-Mar-2009 05:38 pm (UTC)
Chances are the rating will be lower in Canada, anyway. I really don't get why some films are rated R and NC-17. Like Slumdog Millionaire was apparently rated R, but at our theatres they only rated it PG-14.
[info]teflondawn 30th-Mar-2009 05:43 pm (UTC)
Rated R movies routinely get PG-13 over here in Quebec. IDG how that happens but I liked it when I was underage.
[info]madeline_may 30th-Mar-2009 05:44 pm (UTC)
Ohhh Quebec, you break ALL the rules!

(And no, you still can't separate.)
[info]madeline_may 30th-Mar-2009 05:44 pm (UTC)
We rate higher for violence, and the States rates higher for nudity/sex. Somehow, I think we've got our priorities straighter...
[info]watermeloncholy 30th-Mar-2009 05:47 pm (UTC)
The MPAA is like a death nell for movies that show sex/nudity.
[info]sonjamillicent 30th-Mar-2009 06:32 pm (UTC)
I didn't get why Slumdog was rated R, personally.
[info]wring 30th-Mar-2009 05:39 pm (UTC)
surprise surprise. newsworthy? no.
[info]witnessthine 30th-Mar-2009 06:22 pm (UTC)
