Pic Post: Vanity Fair "Famous when you're born"

Some had it easy; others suffered agonies no screenwriter could devise. But the second-generation stars in this portfolio all have one thing in common: they were born in (or near) the spotlight, and decided to stay there.

Tony Curtis, who appeared alongside Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot (1959), is pictured in the late 50s with his wife, Academy Award nominee Janet Leigh, and their daughters, Jamie Lee and Kelly. An adult Jamie Lee Curtis would also find success in film, appearing in A Fish Called Wanda (1988) and True Lies (1994).

Long before Mia Farrow starred in Rosemary’s Baby (as well as a few off-screen dramas of her own, with husbands Frank Sinatra and Woody Allen), she was known as the daughter of Maureen O’Sullivan, who played Jane in 1932’s Tarzan the Ape Man. Here they are together in the 1960s.

Actress Debbie Reynolds, known for film classics such as Singin’ in the Rain (1952) and The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964), is seen here circa 1972 with daughter and future Star Wars star Carrie Fisher.

Setting the bar high as creator and writer of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Carl Reiner appears here with his son, Rob Reiner, in a 1965 episode of the show. The younger Reiner has had similar success, as an actor, director, writer, and producer. His films include Stand by Me (1986), When Harry Met Sally … (1989), and A Few Good Men (1992).

Now known for his tough-guy roles in No Country for Old Men, American Gangster, and Grindhouse (all released in 2007), a young Josh Brolin appears here in a quiet moment with his Emmy Award–winning father, the actor James Brolin, and his mother, Jane Cameron Agee, circa 1970.

In Frank Sinatra’s family, the apples did not fall far from the tree: his daughter Nancy (right, in this 1969 photo) became a successful singer; daughter Tina acted in Fantasy Island and other 70s television series; and son Frank Sinatra Jr. overcame his infamous kidnapping, in 1963, to become a singer.

In 1996, Kirk would be awarded an honorary Oscar commemorating his 50 years in the motion-picture industry. Michael would also receive an Oscar, for his leading role in Wall Street (1987).

Once married actors Bruce Willis and Demi Moore attend the New York premiere of Willis’s Live Free or Die Hard, in 2007, with their daughters Rumer and Tallulah, and Moore’s husband, Ashton Kutcher. An actor and Hollywood trendsetter, Rumer was seen most recently in The House Bunny (2008). Tallulah has also appeared on-screen, as a baby in Moore’s The Scarlet Letter (1995).

I'm basically posting this because of the Old Hollywood pics, the other ones are boring. Which ones are missing, ONTD?

At first I thought it was Christian Bale and I was like "Why is he on this list?"
[info]xtinaiero 12th-Feb-2009 01:56 am (UTC)
SERIOUSLY. When I first saw it I was like, "Wait. Bale doesn't have a son..."
[info]prinzessin784 12th-Feb-2009 02:26 am (UTC)

Melanie Griffith and Tippi Hendren

Mariska Hargitay and Jayne Mansfield (are there pics of them together at all?)
[info]oni85 12th-Feb-2009 01:32 am (UTC)
Melanie Griffith and Tippi Hendren

... WHAT? REALLY?
[info]sexy_cheetah 12th-Feb-2009 01:33 am (UTC)
Yup yup.

Melanie had a pet LION when she was a kid. Crazy family, right?
[info]sushi0nfire 12th-Feb-2009 01:36 am (UTC)
and since Hitch was practically IN LOVE with Tippi, he used to give Melanie presents, and this one present he gave her was a doll in a coffin shaped box
[info]quotequeen20 12th-Feb-2009 01:32 am (UTC)
omg, i second the Mariska and Jayne pics if there are any!
[info]boyracer1211 12th-Feb-2009 01:35 am (UTC)
There are pictures of Mariska and Jayne, but they're primarily when Mariska was a baby.
[info]iichristinll 12th-Feb-2009 01:36 am (UTC)
I came in here to say the Mariska one, yep. Expected to see it.
[info]croutonochrist 12th-Feb-2009 01:37 am (UTC)
I remember catching, like, 5 minutes of some interview with Mariska and they mentioned her mother was Jayne Mansfield and MY MIND WAS BLOWN. I just couldn't wrap my head around it.
[info]stellar_ball 12th-Feb-2009 01:43 am (UTC)
Really? Had no idea, or I just forgot.

Funny cause I was totally channeling Hendren today with my coifed hair.
[info]meyesme_brownme 12th-Feb-2009 05:22 am (UTC)
Yea, only family portrait type stuff when they were babies/toddlers though. Her parents died of a car accident when they were very young.
[info]selene42906 12th-Feb-2009 08:22 am (UTC)
Yeah I was surprised they forgot those two as well...also Liv Tyler/Steven Tyler...
[info]mrmidwest 13th-Feb-2009 02:25 pm (UTC)
I think Melanie was born before she became famous, tho. They're still cool, regardless.
[info]movielooney 12th-Feb-2009 01:31 am (UTC)
Thanks mods for the tag thing, first time I post in this new layout and I wasn't sure how to tag this one.
[info]oni85 12th-Feb-2009 01:31 am (UTC)
the old hollywood ones are awesome
[info]schmiss 12th-Feb-2009 01:32 am (UTC)
I gotta say if my dad was Henry Fonda I would probably have serious daddy issues. or maybe not, I guess he wouldn't look sexy if I grew up with him. but srsly. what I'm saying is:

hot.
[info]gingerslam2 12th-Feb-2009 01:33 am (UTC)
you would've had serious daddy issues anyway, bb, he was not a nice man....
[info]schmiss 12th-Feb-2009 01:36 am (UTC)
True, true. But hey, it's Hollywood, people is crazy.
[info]sushi0nfire 12th-Feb-2009 01:46 am (UTC)
he wasnt nice?! i dont believe you.
[info]jcrract 12th-Feb-2009 01:51 am (UTC)
it's not that he wasnt nice, he just so shy he couldn't talk to his own kids. They interpreted it as standoffish, but they forgave him as they said so on the Biography channel
[info]jcrract 12th-Feb-2009 01:58 am (UTC)
Even if he wasn't nice, he was still hot (at least when he was young)
[info]kaisenji 12th-Feb-2009 03:38 am (UTC)
Towards the end however, they did bury their issues and he died knowing his kids had forgiven him. Or perhaps it was a crock but I like to think that according to biography they did re-connect.
[info]cansuralama 12th-Feb-2009 01:32 am (UTC)
Josh Brolin's father is a replica of Senor Bale, wtf.
[info]meyesme_brownme 12th-Feb-2009 05:30 am (UTC)
Hum, I dunno.... he kinds reminds me of JLo's psycho husband in the movie 'Enough.'
[info]anna1016 12th-Feb-2009 01:32 am (UTC)
james brolin reminds me of christian bale in that photo
[info]ljok_0 12th-Feb-2009 01:35 am (UTC)
i thought that too!!
[info]flashstruck 12th-Feb-2009 01:36 am (UTC)
omg you're right
[info]londonsky 12th-Feb-2009 01:42 am (UTC)

i had to do a double take
[info]movielooney 12th-Feb-2009 02:21 am (UTC)
