Just kidding.  Yes, comments are down.  No, there's no word from LJ yet.  Please remain calm.

It looks like people are already
opening support requests with LJ, which will probably bring attention to the problem quicker.
EDIT:  Someone mentioned the fact ONTD had 16,200,500 comments received and maybe thought that was the cap (a la 10k on posts) so I deleted an old entry and comments still can't be posted.  :'(

Dear Brenden,

It appears that ONTD has reached an undocumented limit - journals can only have approximately 16.7 million total comments made to them before running out of room in the database to store more comments.

This limit includes deleted and screened comments, so deleting old comments or entries won't let new comments be posted. We've contacted development staff who are working on a solution to get commenting working in your community again as we speak. As soon as more information is available, we'll be sure to let you know.

I've edited our "Known Issues" box on
http://www.livejournal.com/support to indicate that we're aware of the problem. Thanks for reporting it and for your continued use of LiveJournal.

Best Regards,

"Just wanted to let you know that the issue with comments returning database errors in ohnotheydidnt is because of an arbitrary limit set in our database which restricts the total number of comments which can be posted to a journal or community of approximately 16.8 million. Your community is the first to reach this limit, which we were unaware existed. The appropriate people have been notified, and are already working to fix this problem as soon as possible."

Note from the mods - no posts are going to be approved until this problem is addressed, for several reasons.  I will try to update this post as much as possible with any information that comes in.

EDIT (as of approximately 1AM PST):

"From the sounds of it, this is going to require some
significant updates to the database for the comment limit to be raised, but the changes are in the process of being made. I can't give a terribly accurate ETA on this being fixed, but right now it's looking like this will be in the 12-18 hour range. At the very least, there should be better information available in that time frame than there is now."

EDIT via
lj_maintenance  as of 12:16AM PST:

"The problem is even more insidious than we initially thought! That means the original ONTD community is going to be in read-only mode until at least tomorrow when a more comprehensive solution can be attained."

EDIT as of 12:09PM on January 29, 2009:

"I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the commenting issue definitely won't be fixed today. The more people dug into this problem overnight, the more complicated it became. There's a great deal of code which needs to be changed, and the most optimistic estimates I'm hearing now are sometime Friday afternoon/evening we may be able to push a fix live. It's very possible, though, that this will not be able to be completed until sometime on Monday. I probably won't have any more information on when this will be fixed before tomorrow, but I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything."

So I guess we play a waiting game, now, ONTD!  Please be patient, I'm sure LJ is already working hard.  Please do NOT submit any posts while we wait for this problem to be resolved.
