Kristen Johnston PETA Ads

Kristen Johnston is speaking out against horse-drawn carriages – and stripping down in the process.

The 3rd Rock from the Sun star will appear in a new PETA ad campaign called "Don’t Get Taken for a Ride – Horse-Drawn Carriages Are Cruel." In her ad, Johnston, 41, appears naked on the back of a horse in a pose that recalls Lady Godiva.

"I was blown away by how these horses live, or actually I should say, don't live," the actress says in a statement. "I'd say to tourists who are considering coming to New York, there's so much amazing stuff about Manhattan ... Oh my God, just take a walk."

"And I hope within the next year that there are no more carriage horses," her statement continues.

The ads will debut Thursday in Central Park and appear on New York City taxis.

amateur_photog 18th-Nov-2008 10:48 pm (UTC)
They live in deplorable conditions and work in a dangerous environment where they are all too often injured or killed.
oh_oh_sheila 18th-Nov-2008 11:10 pm (UTC)

deadly_pudding 18th-Nov-2008 10:19 pm (UTC)
Really? Why are they cruel? Does it hurt the horses?
dazedpuckbunny 18th-Nov-2008 10:32 pm (UTC)
If the horses are overworked without proper wrapping on their legs they can get lamed and busted down, the cement is killer on them. I'm pretty sure there are laws on how long and how hard a horse can be worked though, it wouldn't be good business to have a busted horse dragging a carriage through town.

When I do see horses with unwrapped legs on that cement, however, I want to smack the driver.
alzzers 19th-Nov-2008 12:15 am (UTC)
There are really strict codes to protect the horses though. I don't think the carriage rides in general are ~evol
nonfictions 18th-Nov-2008 10:33 pm (UTC)
Seriously, I'm curious too. I've never heard about it being cruel (if they're kept out of the sun during the hottest part of day, and fed/given water and a chance to rest).
fraubluecher 18th-Nov-2008 10:35 pm (UTC)
I guess their working hours are cruel and they just live in the stinky asphalt street and tiny stables - not like horses should live or whatever. I don't think pulling a carriage then and when would be the problem.
amateur_photog 18th-Nov-2008 10:49 pm (UTC)
In addition to what has been said, horses are not meant to live/work in loud, crowded cities. It causes stress and anxiety. They are also in danger of being hit by cars. I saw it happen live about 6 years ago when I was in Times Square. It was awful. :( :(
scaryclownbaby 18th-Nov-2008 11:11 pm (UTC)
I always felt sorry for the horses here in ny, esp when they work in winter in the freezing cold and you see them just standing there on the side of the street waiting. I went to Montreal and the horses who pull carriages looked so much healthier looking there :(
vcrbeauty From New York Times:19th-Nov-2008 12:50 am (UTC)
NYC Comptroller audited the horse carriage industry and found the following:

Monitoring by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Department of Consumer Affairs at the Central Park South carriage stands is inadequate, the audit found, and lax veterinary care in the field and infrequent inspections have created health hazards.

In addition, horses are not provided with enough water, risk overheating on hot asphalt and are forced to stand in their own waste because of inadequate drainage, the report said. And though licensing is an important tool for tracking horses, the audit found that the paperwork for 57 carriage horses described different animals from year to year, though the license numbers did not change.

wikkidraven 18th-Nov-2008 10:21 pm (UTC)
carriage rides? seriously PETA?

you guys will protest ANYTHING.
amateur_photog 18th-Nov-2008 10:50 pm (UTC)
It's a legitimate cause.
scaryclownbaby 18th-Nov-2008 11:13 pm (UTC)
i don't like peta either, but here in ny its not uncommon to see news stories about some of the carriage horses being abused and working under terrible conditions (too cold, being abused or not properly cared for etc.)
slutdrunkmystag 18th-Nov-2008 11:14 pm (UTC)
It really is a legitimate thing to protest, but by making the focus a naked lady on a horse, they aren't really explaining why people should care.
webofglass 19th-Nov-2008 12:03 am (UTC)
I absolutely despise PETA, but this really is a legitimate cause.
shepherds 19th-Nov-2008 12:18 am (UTC)
shut up
sylph 19th-Nov-2008 12:28 am (UTC)
it makes more sense than trying to get people to stop eating meat.
lennoxs 18th-Nov-2008 10:21 pm (UTC)
this is the one peta ad i agree with, tbqh.
horses are da best.
shanny_w 18th-Nov-2008 10:22 pm (UTC)
Maybe she should be worried about bigger things if she likes horses. Like the american wild horses slaughter thats going on right now. Not a lot of people know about it.
lepetitegemme 18th-Nov-2008 10:27 pm (UTC)
why are they slaughtering them :(
shanny_w 18th-Nov-2008 10:36 pm (UTC)
From what I have heard they claim that some day down the road they may starve to death. Which would be almost impossible with the amount of land they have to roam on. They arent overpopulated. Few of them are being adopted out. But they are corralling them up in big pens and then they dont have enough to feed them so they starve/shoot them. Originally they are supposed to preserve them as a national treasure.
dazedpuckbunny 18th-Nov-2008 10:38 pm (UTC)
They sell the meat to fancy restaurants and to countries that crave horse steaks. *twitch*
in_this_love 18th-Nov-2008 10:33 pm (UTC)

britneys 18th-Nov-2008 10:22 pm (UTC)
I think I'd be more sympathetic if there was information provided on how they're being mistreated.
deadly_pudding 18th-Nov-2008 10:23 pm (UTC)
exactly.
starrlitt 18th-Nov-2008 10:24 pm (UTC)

nappyxheadedxho 18th-Nov-2008 10:44 pm (UTC)
What, the naked woman on the horse is not good enough for you?
slutdrunkmystag 18th-Nov-2008 11:15 pm (UTC)
Who needs information when they can use photos of naked ladies?
kyoto19 18th-Nov-2008 10:23 pm (UTC)
oh please
wyvernrabbit 18th-Nov-2008 10:24 pm (UTC)
Horses and PETA aside, is that that woman's real hair?

Also, that ad is really unfortunate looking.
