"Actors Who Deserve Better"

Saw this awesome post on IMDb, and thought I would share. My comments are in italics...

There's a lot of great talent out there in movie land, I'm sure there's plenty of fans who've pondered about how many amazing actors who just never seem to be in the spotlight or get the top billing when so many talentless celebs are out there hogging the spotlight. It's definitely something I've thought myself, so here's a selection of actors who I've always felt deserve better.

Rufus Sewell: Whether it's been acting circles around Ed Norton in The Illusionist or hamming it up and chewing scenery in A Knight's Tale, I've felt Rufus has always been a versatile actor with incredible screen presence, and I don't think I've ever seen him in a role where I haven't felt that presence or where he gives a less than stellar performance. Even when he's relegated to fairly poor films like Bless the Child (he was awesome in this...) he seems to put in 100%. I first took notice of him in Dark City (this movie rocks, btw.) and always wondered why he hasn't gotten bigger roles, he's always been a minor character or villain.

Kevin J. O'Connor: is someone who you should often notice in smaller B-movie roles, such as in The Mummy, and always turns in a funny or otherwise enjoyable performance, but as a serious actor he's absolutely terrific. Most people would recognise him as Henry, Daniel Plainview's 'brother' in There Will Be Blood, where he gives a brilliant and extremely memorable performance alongside Daniel Day-Lewis. I hope that after being in a film of such acclaim that more people start to notice him and he gets bigger and better roles. (This guy has turned out two very cool performances in some of my favorite cheesy films: Swan in Lord of Illusions and Greasemonkey in Deep Rising.)

Jason Patric: is probably best remembered for his role as Michael in The Lost Boys, which is a shame because he really is a fantastic actor, just see him in Sleepers if you want proof. Pity he went on to do the awful Speed 2: Cruise Control after that. The real gem in Patric's resume though, is Narc where he stars alongside Ray Liotta, possibly one of the best cop thrillers of this decade. He's a great actor and I hope to see more from him in the future.(Still a hottie, too)

John Turturro: if you're a Coen Brothers fan, is no stranger. Many will remember him as 'The Jesus' in The Big Lebowski, and other small roles, but he's perfectly capable of carrying a film as he proves in Barton Fink. I suppose compared to other actors I've mentioned here, he's much more famous, but still someone who seems always on the edge of fame, someone that people would recognise, but not know his name. A terrific actor, and well worth noting. (I don't know, I think he's done well for himself. Ummm, hello, Quiz Show?)

James Van Der Beek: Seriously, I really do think he deserves better. A two part episode of Criminal Minds turned me into a fan instantly, his performance absolutely blew me away, I didn't even realise it was Van Der Beek at first. Most people know him as Dawson Leery, but look beyond that and you'll find a surprisingly versatile actor. It might be worth taking a look at The Rules of Attraction to see that he's certainly film star material, I'll be looking out for anything noteworthy he's doing in the future. (Bwahahahahahahahahaha)

Ted Levine: His portrayal of Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs was nothing short of astonishing, possibly one of the most disturbing and utterly creepy serial killers ever seen on film. Most people talk about Anthony Hopkins, but for me, Levine stole the picture. He's had a good career since then, having roles in Heat, Ali and The Manchurian Candidate. (Love this guy. He's got a steady gig as the Chief on "Monk.")

Chiwetel Ejiofor: This man extrudes charisma, I don't think I've seen a baddie that I cheered for as much as I had as his 'Operative' in "Serenity," Chiwetel really is brilliant. See him steal the limelight from Clive Owen in Children of Men, or Denzel Washington in American Gangster. He's a very powerful actor, and we really should see a lot more from him if there's any justice. (Rent Dirty Pretty Things. He's got the lead role in that film, and he's excellent.)

Yes, Miley/Selena/Britney/Jonas Bros posts are fun and whatnot, but I love that ONTD is accepting of interesting and intelligent discussions about Hollyweird, too.

CHIWETEL EJIOFOR FTW. That man is heaven on the screen, everyone should know who he is.

I love this list, I like a lot of lesser known actors and can think of many more to add to it, i.e. Ben Foster

people will laugh at James Van Der Beek being here, but he really surprised/impressed me in The Rules of Attraction. I was wary that he could play that character well and he did great imo
[info]boogabooga_xx 3rd-Nov-2008 07:27 pm (UTC)
That is one of my favorite movies ever, tbh
[info]anna_salem 3rd-Nov-2008 07:43 pm (UTC)
The point in the post about Ejiofor having "charisma" is utterly true. The man is soft-spoken, with a hint of menace (as in Serenity) or mystery (as in Dirty Pretty Things).

He is amazing.
[info]cinecat 3rd-Nov-2008 07:49 pm (UTC)
Totally! I sing this man's praises whenever I can. I'm still pissed to this day that I didn't get to see him and Ewan McGregor in a London production of Othello a while ago
[info]kerrie_2point0 4th-Nov-2008 12:40 am (UTC)
Dirty Pretty Things is fucking amazing. How did we get so lucky as to have him and Audrey Tautou and Sergi Lopez in one movie? And Sophie Okonedo?!

Good goddamn that movie was so good. I should buy that.
[info]rubykatewriting 3rd-Nov-2008 08:13 pm (UTC)
CHIWETEL EJIOFOR FTW. That man is heaven on the screen, everyone should know who he is.
THIS. He is just beyond amazing. Hands down one of the best actors (and most versatile) out there.

people will laugh at James Van Der Beek being here, but he really surprised/impressed me in The Rules of Attraction.
My main problem with his inclusion on this list for that particular movie is that I basically think he was just playing himself. He has always come across as a jackass, so Sean Bateman did not seem like even a little bit of a stretch. I think the only shock it held was the fact that it was so opposite Dawson Leery (only not really, since dear Dawson was a complete douche) .

He continued to be a fabulous actor.
[info]sillycucumber Re: Ohoh And Ben Foster3rd-Nov-2008 10:52 pm (UTC)
Flash Forward's what I think of when I hear his name too, lol.

But seriously. He's fine and talented - a lethal combination.
[info]marefrigoris Re: Ohoh And Ben Foster3rd-Nov-2008 07:28 pm (UTC)

[info]teflondawn Re: Ohoh And Ben Foster3rd-Nov-2008 07:57 pm (UTC)
Totally. He's one of those guys that just seems to meld with every role he takes on. I can never remember his name, though.
[info]boyracer1211 Re: Ohoh And Ben Foster3rd-Nov-2008 08:00 pm (UTC)
Agreed! He's usually in smaller roles, but he is definitely a true scene stealer.
[info]steamedmirror Re: Ohoh And Ben Foster3rd-Nov-2008 08:01 pm (UTC)
Charlie Prince! I watched X-Men 3 for you.
[info]sunchick05 Re: Ohoh And Ben Foster3rd-Nov-2008 08:23 pm (UTC)
He is a grossly underrated actor. ♥

He's terrific. He blew me away in Bang Bang You're Dead. Why do I get the feeling that I'm one of the only people who loved that movie? I hardly ever hear anyone talk about it =/
[info]reginadentata Re: Ohoh And Ben Foster3rd-Nov-2008 10:23 pm (UTC)
absolutely agree. he's such a good character actor.
[info]radname 3rd-Nov-2008 07:27 pm (UTC)
agree about rufus, i think i saw him in dark city too i don't remember the name of the film, but it was such a weird movie but he was good in it
[info]boogabooga_xx 3rd-Nov-2008 07:28 pm (UTC)
Dark City also has Jennifer Connelly in it, and its like nightime all the time.

Yes yes and yes!
[info]angelbaby63249 3rd-Nov-2008 08:58 pm (UTC)
bb, i think you and i are going to follow each other everywhere with our NPH love.

I think he's got a good thing going with HIMYM, he's basically the star of the show, he just needs to get fucking recognized for it!!!

I am still so mad at the Emmys this year for giving it to J Piv. He's already got like, 6, give one to someone else deserving, like our Swarley!!!
[info]bellebass 3rd-Nov-2008 10:33 pm (UTC)
I take small comfort in the fact that he's at least getting nominated.
[info]__papillon 3rd-Nov-2008 07:27 pm (UTC)
rufus sewell ftw. he kinda looks like clive owen, so then i keep on thinking he was in king arthur with ioan gruffudd (he deserves better too), but then i realize that the medieval england movie he's been in is tristan and isolde, lol.
