FRIENDS of Joaquin Phoenix are worried about the star, who has had a very public battle with drink and drugs. The two-time Oscar nominee ("Walk the Line" and "Gladiator") showed up to a tribute to Paul Newman last week in San Francisco and "was out of it," said one attendee. Other actors were performing scenes and readings, but Phoenix just got up and walked out. "He wobbled back in a bit later, but it was odd," said our source. "He was slurring his words and was unsteady on his feet." Phoenix gave a weird interview to "Extra" in which he said he was retiring from acting. A rep for Phoenix said, "He's fine. He just wants to focus on music, and he'll be at the screening of his film 'Two Lovers' on Saturday night in LA, and he's directed a number of music videos over the past couple of years."

He doesn't sound fine to me. :( I hope he doesn't follow in the footsteps of his brother.

I think that his quitting Hollywood for music is a sort of tribute to River, who one day planned to do the same thing. Both River and Joaquin had/have this sense that Hollywood was poison. River was looking forward to the day when he no longer made movies, but rather played music instead. I think Joaquin has a lot of the same views and ideals as River, so I don't think he's fucking with the media.

They were raised in a religious cult called Children Of God, but they escaped when River was about 7. I think he dealt with those demons for the entirety of his short life. His parents realized how damaging the cult was and got away as fast as they could, suffering extreme poverty along the way.

Adding to what was already said, after they left the cult, River was basically their meal ticket, at first performing on street corners, and then graduating to acting.

Up until his death he was the sole provider for the family.

He just has this tragic vibe to him, like his brother River(I actually think Joaquin seems more unstable than his brother did), and others like Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley etc. I can't explain it really, but you can pretty much sense it.I love him as an actor and think he seems pretty interesting, but yeah, he seems troubled.

=( The anniversary of River's passing just happened on Halloween. Of all times of the year, undoubtedly this must be the worst for Joaquin. I love this family so fucking much and I wish him the help he needs and deserves.
