Angelina: I've Already Bought Maddox Some Knives

Like mother, like son!

Angelina Jolie says she is passing down her knife obsession to her seven-year-old son Maddox.

"My mom took me to buy my first daggers when I was 11 or 12," Jolie says in the new issue of W magazine. "And I've already bought Maddox some."

The actress has long been obsessed with knives.

In a 2003 interview with 20/20, she admitted that, as a teen, she once had a relationship that involved ritual self-mutilation.

"I got knives out and had a night where we attacked each other... it felt so primitive and it felt so honest... and then I had to deal with, you know, not telling my mother, hiding things, wearing gauze bandages to high school," she said.

She said she no longer engages in such activities now that she's a mother.

ETA: Apparently the full quote is "My mom took me to buy my first daggers when I was 11 or 12," she recalls. "And I've already bought Maddox some things. We take him to a special shop." She emphasizes that the knife blades are dulled so they're not dangerous, and that the purchases are accompanied by discussions about violence. But, she says, "we also talk about samurais and about the idea of defending someone as good. We talk about everything." thanks, [info]__pink_roses

[info]scaryclownbaby 13th-Oct-2008 08:08 pm (UTC)
ikr you srsly think that 6 children (or 7?) all under the age of 12 are going to play nice? someone is going to piss someone else off and they're going to get hurt "dull edges" or not.
[info]apothecary06 13th-Oct-2008 10:27 pm (UTC)
So true - and somehow, I don't think that he's absorbing everything from these discussions she says she's having with him. Self-defense isn't a concept that a kid that age is going to grasp. And she said so herself that she used her knives for self-injury, so IMO her effort to reframe knives as a cultural thing is weak.
[info]forgethissmile 13th-Oct-2008 08:34 pm (UTC)
Seriously.

If I quickly figured out how to hurt my brother using Barbie's Malibu convertible, how long would it take a kid to stabbity-stab the other?

[info]__pink_roses Full quote13th-Oct-2008 07:12 pm (UTC)
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's seven-year-old son, Maddox, like many boys his age, has lately developed a fondness for guns and knives, and Jolie proudly notes that the predilection runs in the family.
"My mom took me to buy my first daggers when I was 11 or 12," she recalls. "And I've already bought Maddox some things. We take him to a special shop." She emphasizes that the knife blades are dulled so they're not dangerous, and that the purchases are accompanied by discussions about violence. But, she says, "we also talk about samurais and about the idea of defending someone as good. We talk about everything."

HA! Comment twins!

I can haz contekst.
[info]hoitytoity Re: Full quote13th-Oct-2008 07:20 pm (UTC)
thank you for posting this. ugh, sometimes people just WANT to start shit. there's nothing wrong with what she does. its just like buying your little boy toy guns and playing with GI Joes and stuff. same damn thing...at least she has discussions with him!
[info]xballet Re: Full quote13th-Oct-2008 07:23 pm (UTC)
much better.
[info]keepingsecrets Re: Full quote13th-Oct-2008 10:18 pm (UTC)
lol tbh the context doesn't make it much less crazy imo
[info]apothecary06 Re: Full quote13th-Oct-2008 10:30 pm (UTC)
iawtc. She's reframing it as a tradition of sorts, but I'm sure that she doesn't want him following in the tradition of what she actually used knives for. I should hope not, anyway.
[info]quendra Thank you.13th-Oct-2008 11:40 pm (UTC)
My nephew is 7 years old, and like any boy, he loves that knives and guns, I find that normal, they're fake after all, big fucking deal! Moving along.
[info]teflondawn 13th-Oct-2008 07:13 pm (UTC)
They forgot the part where she says the daggers are dulled and they talk about violence and whatnot. Not that I think it's any less dangerous, but I'm jus sayin.
[info]liquiddatura 13th-Oct-2008 07:14 pm (UTC)
You have to admit it is indeed less dangerous.
[info]teflondawn 13th-Oct-2008 07:21 pm (UTC)
It is less dangerous, but it's still a little too jabby for my tastes. But then again, thinking about the way my brother was at Maddox's age, kids can hurt themselves with anything.
[info]liquiddatura 13th-Oct-2008 07:14 pm (UTC)
There is nothing wrong with knives.

She didn't say she put them in his crib.

You do not automatically decide to cut yourself simply because you have knives.
[info]rideyourflame 13th-Oct-2008 07:17 pm (UTC)
agreed
[info]cherie_b 13th-Oct-2008 07:20 pm (UTC)
Very true. If that was the case, I would have shot myself by now, due to the fact that there are 3 guns in my house.
[info]liquiddatura 13th-Oct-2008 07:21 pm (UTC)
And all of us would have drowned in bathtubs.

People apparently have no faith in their restraint.
[info]__pink_roses 13th-Oct-2008 07:24 pm (UTC)
lol. So true.
[info]arcadiaego 13th-Oct-2008 09:44 pm (UTC)
Ha, exactly, I bet there are more people in America with a gun in their house than with ritual knives.
[info]hoitytoity 13th-Oct-2008 07:21 pm (UTC)
exactly. there are tons of people out there who cut themselves and don't own a knife collection. one doesn't lead to the other. self-mutilation is about dealing with your own internal issues...not having a fascination with violence or weapons or whatever.
