David Duchovny has entered a rehabilitation center for sex addiction, his lawyer, Stanton "Larry" Stein, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

"I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction," the actor says in an exclusive statement. "I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family."

Duchovny, 48, has been married to actress Téa Leoni since 1997. They have two children, daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd, 6

I read a while ago that he had been cheating on wife Tea during filming of some movie...and most people brushed it aside claiming it's all a rumor started by someone vindictive. Heard that same rumor again on the set of another movie he was working on...

While its certainly possible, I also think that "sex addiction" could be a classier attempt at saying "porn addiction" or "strip club addiction".

I'm sure if there were flings with hookers, this would be a divorce/adultery scandal and not a rehab one. Or maybe Tia is giving him a second chance and is being classy about it.
