Best Supporting Drama Actor
Biggest surprise among the stars missing from the Emmy list of semifinalists for best supporting drama actor is last year's champ Terry O'Quinn ("Lost"). Also snubbed: last year's nominee Masi Oka ("Heroes"). Other notable oversights: Donald Sutherland ("Dirty Sexy Money"), John Larroquette ("Boston Legal"), Henry Ian Cusick ("Lost") and Robert Sean Leonard ("House"). Please note that there are 11 names listed, not the usual 10. This must signify an especially close result in the popular vote.

Best Comedy Actress
No joke: Sarah Silverman is on the Emmy list of Top 10 semifinalists for best comedy actress. Thus "The Sarah Silverman Program" might score a breakthrough bid for Comedy Central after judges review sample episodes and accountants calculate votes. In past years HBO and Showtime were the only cable channels whose stars were nominated in this category.
Biggest omission from this top 10 list: What do Emmy voters have against Teri Hatcher? While all three of her "Desperate Housewives" costars — Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman and even the vampy Eva Longoria Parker — made the cut, Hatcher got snubbed. Also missing from the list of funny ladies: past winner Patricia Heaton ("Back to You") and, on a lighter note, Miley Cyrus ("Hannah Montana").
Today members of the TV acting's acting branch who serve as judges of the Emmy performance categories began receiving sample series episodes with their ballots. Judges are permitted to view them leisurely at home, but must sign an affidavit attesting that they watched all DVDs. They rank the entries 10 (best score) to 1. Accountants combine their scores with results of the original popular vote on a 50-50 basis, then determine the nominees, which will be unveiled July 17.
While the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences released the top 10 lists of contenders for best comedy and drama series last week, it announced that it will not disclose the acting lists. However, Gold Derby is now starting to get word and will publish results over the next few days, just as we have over the previous two years when the academy refused to release any info. We hope that our disclosures will hike pressure on academy to disclose all semifinalist info — as the Oscars and Daytime Emmys do as a matter of open policy.
BEST COMEDY ACTRESS
Christina Applegate, "Samantha Who?" ("The Restraining Order")
Marcia Cross, "Desperate Housewives" ("Now You Know")
America Ferrera, "Ugly Betty" ("Odor in the Court")
Tina Fey, "30 Rock" ("Sandwich Day")
Anna Friel, "Pushing Daisies" ("Bitter Sweets")
Felicity Huffman, "Desperate Housewives" ("Now I Know, Don't Be Scared")
Eva Longoria Parker, "Desperate Housewives" ("In Buddy's Eyes")
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "New Adventures of Old Christine" ("One and a Half Men")
Mary-Louise Parker, "Weeds" ("Bill Sussman")
Sarah Silverman, "The Sarah Silverman Program" ("Bored of the Rings")

Best supporting Drama Actress
Yep, again there are 11 entries instead of 10 — just like in the race for best supporting drama actor. We must assume that the popular vote was so close between the tenth and eleventh vote-getters that the accountants OK'd them both to be considered as one of the five nominees to be unveiled on July 17.
Most surprising omissions: January Jones, who portrays Jon Hamm's emotionally troubled wife on "Mad Men". Her role is so prominent that many Emmy observers were surprised she opted to compete in the supporting race, not lead like costar Elizabeth Moss. Out of Emmy bounds: Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights"), who dropped down to the supporting race after making the Top 10 runoff for best lead drama actress last year. This doesn't mean that the low-rated critical hit has fallen out of favor with Emmy voters — "Friday Night Lights" made the Top 10 runoff for best drama series. It's an obvious anti-Connie thing.
Also missing in Emmy action: Lisa Edelstein ("House"), January Jones ("Mad Men"), Patricia Wettig ("Brothers and Sisters"). Plus several more "Grey's Anatomy" gals were eligible, but aren't here: Chyler Leigh, Sara Ramirez, Brooke Smith. Four "Lost" stars are lost: Yunjin Kim, Rebecca Mader, Elizabeth Mitchell, Emelie de Ravin.
Note that Candice Bergen — who made this list — is back in Emmy competition. Last year she took her name out of this race, just as she had bowed out of the battle for best lead comedy actress during the waning days of "Murphy Brown" after winning five times. However, Bergen did submit her name for consideration in this supporting-drama lineup two years ago when she reaped her last Emmy nomination for "Boston Legal."
Cited with each name on this list is the title of the episode entered to Emmy judges as a sample of their best work from the past TV season. Judges will rank their choices 11 (best score) to 1, then accountants will combine those numbers with results of the original popular vote on a 50/50 basis to determine the final five nominees.
BEST SUPPORTING DRAMA ACTRESS
Jane Alexander, "Tell Me You Love Me" (Episode 10)
Candice Bergen, "Boston Legal" ("The Mighty Rogues")
Rose Byrne, "Damages" ("Because I Know Patty")
Jill Clayburgh, "Dirty Sexy Money" ("The Watch")
Sharon Gless, "Burn Notice" ("Identity")
Rachel Griffiths, "Brothers and Sisters" ("Domestic Issues")
Christina Hendricks, "Mad Men" ("Babylon")
S. Epatha Merkerson, "Law and Order" ("Bottomless")
Sandra Oh, "Grey's Anatomy" ("The Becoming")
Dianne Wiest, "In Treatment" ("Paul and Gina: Week ?")
Chandra Wilson, "Grey's Anatomy" ("Lay Your Hands on Me")

Also, where the FUCK is Henry Ian Cusick? The Constant was the best episode of Lost, EVER, and it was all his doing.
Edited at 2008-07-01 05:36 pm (UTC)
AND I AGREE. SO MUCH. The Constant was amazing. But HIC isn't that well known and with Naveen and Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn and everything, he probably fell through the cracks. And TOQ was probably left out because he already won.
A+
I want best male actors in a drama. Michael C. Hall better get a nom.
...i think it's by far my favorite episode.
And he better win. or i'ma have to cut some bitches.
she is so awesome.
Steve Carrell has been robbed for three years in a row. I hope he gets at least a nom this year, even though he deserves a win.
