Duffy's "Mercy" wins song of the year award

Duffy wins big with Mercy at Mojo Awards

Duffy, the Welsh singer hailed as the new Dusty Springfield, has won Song of the Year at the Mojo Awards with her hit single, Mercy.

The 23-year-old former waitress has shot to fame in the past six months, offering a clean-cut alternative to Amy Winehouse.

Number one single Mercy is taken from her debut album, Rockferry, which has so far sold close to one million copies.

The awards are voted by readers of Mojo magazine. Editor Phil Alexander called Duffy's song a "timeless" classic. "It could really have come from any period in time over the last 50 years," he said.

The singer - who dropped her first name, Aimee, before launching her pop career - grew up in the tiny North Wales seaside community of Nefyn. The town had no record shops and the story goes that Duffy, with little access to modern music, based her sound on a tape recording of Sixties television show Ready, Steady, Go! which belonged to her father.

Aged 16, she appeared on Wawffactor, a Welsh-language version of Pop Idol, and finished second.

She was snapped up by a record label and the inevitable comparisons with Winehouse followed, although Duffy has steered well clear of the drug problems which have threatened to derail Winehouse's career.

This is her first major award - she was also nominated for Best Newcomer but was beaten to it by The Last Shadow Puppets, the side project of Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner.

Other winners at the annual awards ceremony in east London included Led Zeppelin, named Best Live Act for their comeback performance in London last year.

The Sex Pistols received the Icon Award as the band which has "redefined modern music in the space of one solitary album and influenced every aspect of popular culture, from fashion to the media, film and literature".

Neil Diamond won the Classic Songwriter award, Paul Weller was honoured with an Outstanding Contribution to Music award, and The Specials were inducted into the Mojo Hall of Fame. Genesis were given the Lifetime Achievement award.

Mercy was pretty awesome before it got overplayed. I still dig it, but the only other Duffy song I like is "Breaking my own heart."

I finally downloaded her CD and it was really bad. I will admit that Mercy is pretty catchy but other then that her voice is beyond painful.

I also downloaded Adele's CD and I loooooooooooooooove it.

Duffy's album is better than Adele's IMO. Although I prefer Adele's voice to Duffy's.

I love Zeppelin, Motorhead, Sex Pistols (guilty pleasure), and Genesis (old lady music).
I thought the Juno soundtrack suited the movie really well, but I wouldn't listen to it on my own time.
