Coldplay's piano gift for school

Coldplay's Piano Gift For School

Pop giants Coldplay have bought a £3,000 (approx $6,000) piano for a Gloucestershire primary school that lost its musical instruments during the floods of 2007.

Bassist Guy Berryman heard about the school's plight from his neighbour. It led to the Grammy-award winning group, who had hits with Speed of Sound and Yellow, buying the Kemble piano for St David's School in Moreton-in-Marsh.

Head teacher Bob Forster said: "It is fantastic. I was impressed they cared enough to want to help." It is believed the band acted after seeing pictures of the school's piano floating in the water-filled hall. Mr Forster added: "Music is important to St David's and gives huge pleasure to people inside and out of the school. "We didn't ask for the money, but Guy Berryman is a neighbour of one of our teaching support workers and that's how they heard about us." All the school's instruments - keyboards, drums, recorders, and handbells - were wrecked when water swept through the corridors last July.

The band, whose singer Chris Martin is married to Gwyneth Paltrow, has sold 30 million albums making them one of the world's biggest acts. The 320-pupil school has now sent a thank you letter to Coldplay and will also send photos of the piano being used.

I think I should stop posting and go do some work, y/y?

oh bless them.

ok so i'm really upset with their new music. it's as though they've let all the coldplay jokes and wussy-mocking get to them and they're trying to break free of that and toughen up a little bit, and stop being so heartfelt and deep. it's really sad. i feel like i've lost them. their new music is not very good at all. i miss the era of a rush of blood to the head. that was genius. i hope one day they return to that and realize that stuff is real and amazing and who cares if people dont get it.

Maybe you just need to hear the whole album. I think the heartfelt emotion is still there from the songs I've heard, especially with Viva La Vida and Lost?.

i mean i sitll like them, but it's all half as good as their last albums songs. :(

It's actually Mary Kate Olsen, from her spread in Nylon magazine.

I agree though, I wish my eyes were that colour!

lol what a waste? it's nice buying them a fancy piano, but it would have made more sense to buy like five decent quality pianos rather than one nice one
[info]lovetogoss Re: lol19th-May-2008 06:08 pm (UTC)
agreed! my school always had tons of each kind of instrument, sure they weren't professional symphony quality but each kid who wanted to learn had the chance.

£3,000 isn't that much for a piano........the subheadline makes it seem like a big deal.

I think the point is that they went out of their way to help a school.
Not that it was a ~fabulous~ piano or anything.

I like your icon. I love playing piano.
[info]ieatpianos 19th-May-2008 08:42 pm (UTC)
how long have you played? :D
[info]n8_a_a 20th-May-2008 01:01 am (UTC)
since kindergarten so like 15 years...u?
[info]ieatpianos 20th-May-2008 01:17 am (UTC)
wow, i've been in lessons for 2 years, so you're probably 10,000 times better than me, lulz. what pieces are you working on?
[info]n8_a_a 20th-May-2008 01:45 am (UTC)
hmm I like playing chopin's polonaises, but I haven't been working on classical pieces the last couple months. I like to learn contemporary songs (hush sound!) by ear.

I reallllly want to start a piano rock band ;p
[info]ieatpianos 20th-May-2008 02:39 am (UTC)
haha, can i be in it :D a piano rock band sound awesome, tbh

i'm working on rachmaninoffs prelude in C# minor (opus 3, no 2) and i think i'm supposed to start some etude, eh idk.

can you score out your own songs? that's what i've been doing a lot of lately, it's fun. i hate learning stuff by ear, it doesn't necessarily take too much time - i just feel the need to score what i'm playing (because i won't remember an on the spot ear performance unless i record it) and that takes forever.
[info]n8_a_a 20th-May-2008 02:46 am (UTC)
hey that's pretty good for 2 years.

umm I don't usually write them out. I have to play it 3 or 4 times with the song, but then I pretty much memorize it. songs written now a days aren't that complex. sometimes I put my video camera on the piano to record haha.

you know what's realllllly fun? playing piano while someone's playing bass and just jamming.
[info]ieatpianos 19th-May-2008 06:27 pm (UTC)
omg, buy me a piano

i'll eat it
[info]fauxjoy 19th-May-2008 06:41 pm (UTC)
that's nice :)
[info]will_2001 19th-May-2008 07:02 pm (UTC)
I liked the 40 Year Old Virgin joke about them even more when I heard Chrisy got his panties in a twist over it. You got money, buy a sense of humor, pretentious douchenozzle.
[info]corneliius 19th-May-2008 07:11 pm (UTC)
wtf, that is the dumbest thing ive heard in a while

oh so its okay to make fun of something you wrote from the heart and put out there for everyone, because what matters in life is money, not real stuff like that. uh huh.
