James Blunt's Concert War Message

British crooner James Blunt kept his ladies'-man persona intact Friday night at the Beacon Theatre - until he launched into his poignant ballad "No Bravery," and the collective swooning turned to gasps.

As Blunt revealed that he wrote the tune while serving as an armed NATO peacekeeper in Kosovo, the captivated audience watched a massive video screen display images of bombed homes, dead bodies and graves interspersed with smiling children flashing peace signs.

"The film was my footage, taken from our vehicles while we patrolled," the singer later told us at an after-party. "I recently had a chance to go back and play for the Serbs, and they were all in on my message. It's great because music is the strongest form of communication, and it was nice to connect with them."

Whoa he was a peacemaker in Kosovo? And wrote anti-war songs? I have a newfound respect for him.

Also, LOL NATO icon! I like NATO, but I love the UN more.

That's why I really liked him when he first became a singer (read: before he became a bit of douchebag). The song "No Bravery" is supposedly all about what he saw in Kosovo at the time.

I'm a big NATO fan! I had the chance to take a class on European Security Issues and NATO taught by Ambassador Hunter (US representative to NATO under Clinton), and it was FANTASTIC. The UN has been ruined for my through MUN, quite frankly. ;)

You know, I'm not a fan of his music, but I like him. I've seen a few interviews and he seems like a nice guy. And double props for writing anti-war songs while serving.

He's been putting that footage into his shows for a while now. It never fails, the crowd always gets a little more quiet and thoughtful.

He opened for a Jason Mraz concert I was at, and when he sang that, we had no clue how to react. Actually, his whole show was like that. It was so slow. Like, we just weren't expecting it.

NATO is sort of my specialty as well. I'm currently an IA undergraduate focusing on European security, but intend to go back to Europe for my MA (can't afford to stay in the States, hehe). Good luck on your dissertation!
