Jennifer Love Hewitt spent her Monday afternoon with boyfriend Jamie Kennedy in Toluca Lake, Ca.

Madonna sought comfort from friend Stella McCartney last night after jetting back to the UK from Malawi.

The singer was said to be 'devastated and shaking' at having to leave four-year-old Mercy in the African country after a judge rejected her adoption bid.

Dressed in a black and white print dress, the singer was ushered into the venue by minders who put a protective arm around her.

A cut was visible on her arm, but it was not clear how she sustained the injury.

Despite the strain of recent days, the singer managed a smile as she made her way through the scrum of photographers.

She put out a welcoming arm to greet Stella, who was dressed head to to win black.

Madonna was met by ex-husband Guy Ritchie as she landed yesterday.

Ritchie leapt up the stairs to sweep their adopted son David into his arms for a hug, and whisk him and son Rocco, eight, off to his Wiltshire estate.

He and Madonna did not appear to speak to each other, but Ritchie has publicly supported the adoption of Mercy.

However, the pair were said to have argued over the issue while still married, and Ritchie's father John said yesterday that his son would be 'very relieved' by the court's decision.

Judge Esme Chombo ruled last week that Madonna could not adopt Mercy as she had not met residency rules which require adoptive parents to live in Malawi for 18 to 24 months.

The star's lawyer Alan Chinula described the judgment as 'incomprehensible', saying the same court had approved her adoption of David Banda in 2006.

He said they were appealing the decision in Malawi's Supreme Court, and believed he had a good chance of winning.

Sources said Madonna told him: 'Do whatever you can to get me my Mercy; I can't imagine her going back to the orphanage.'

The singer and her eldest daughter Lourdes, 12, were said to have fought back tears as they left Malawi without the child.

Madonna also reportedly told aides: 'I can't believe I'm leaving my beautiful baby behind. It's not right. I love that baby girl... She's my little girl  -  she needs to be with me.'

Officials have already returned Mercy to an orphanage, despite the appearance of a man claiming to be her biological father.

Security guard James Kambewa, 24, said he was willing to take a DNA test to prove he was Mercy's father and wants to raise the child.

If the court in Malawi accepts his paternity claim it is likely to be the final blow to Madonna's hopes of adopting the child.

Mr Kambewa, who lives in a remote village 100 miles from Lilongwe, said he was told Mercy had died with her mother at the birth.

He told the Sunday Mirror: 'I bear no grudge against Madonna. But I am Mercy's father and I want her to stay with me... I will make it plain that my daughter will be staying in Malawi with me.'

Madonna had been told the girl was an orphan and Malawian authorities said her mother and father were dead. The girl's other relatives had consented to the adoption.

The row echoes that over the adoption of David Banda, when his relatives came forward to oppose plans for him to be taken out of the country.

In the newest issue of Us Weekly, Lindsay Lohan opens up about her heartbreaking split from Samantha Ronson, the "humiliating" weekend showdown with Ronson's family, and says that friends' fears she is suicidal are unfounded.

"It's absolute hell," Lohan told Us on Monday in a far-ranging interview over several lengthy phone calls and emails where she was both agitated, crying and baffled by the turn of events.

Ronson broke it off with her girlfriend of nearly two years last Friday, and hired five security guards to keep Lohan out of an afterparty for her sister Charlotte at the Chateau Marmont.

"The worst night of my life," Lohan -- who was staying directly one floor above the Ronsons with her mom Dina and sister Ali -- tells Us.
The next day, Ronson changed the locks on the Hollywood Hills home she shared with Lohan. On Monday, Ronson's mom and sister asked police about obtaining a restraining order against Lohan, Beverly Hills Sgt. Nutall confirms to Us.

"I'm not a bad person and this is what happens," Lohan told Us through tears. "I was raised to treat people well, and I'm so tired of this drama."

Lohan says she's "so alone" without Ronson.

"Everyone's turned on me," says the actress. She tells the magazine that the night of the Chateau showdown, Nicole Richie walked by her and said "Uck," and Drea DeMatteo said, "Come at me, bitch."

"I'm a f--king 22-year-old girl who's in love," she says. "I felt like I was in Mean Girls, but worse: Mean Girls was a movie."

Sources tell the magazine Ronson had repeatedly tried to break up with Lohan over the past month, but each time, "Lindsay threatens to kill herself -- she cares about her but wants out."

Lohan laughs upon hearing that, saying she's okay.

"I'm just really hurt!" she says. "The whole situation is sick."

There are women who want to be noticed, and women who prefer do the noticing. That’s something I couldn’t help but observe while interviewing Michele Abbott and Kathy Greenberg in the bar at the Chateau Marmont recently.

Abbott and Greenberg, who along with Ilene Chaiken created The L Word, are in many ways atypical of the image that setting likely evokes in your mind. They live, work and play in Hollywood, but unlike some of their peers, being noticed isn’t high on their list of priorities.

But you already know that if you’ve been aware of their silence over the six-season run of their show.

I met Abbott, a hilarious and talented producer, and Greenberg, a cautious yet equally funny and extremely successful screenwriter (who played a large role in bringing us Ratatouille), two years ago.

It took me that long to convince them to talk to me on the record about their significant contributions to the hit show; how they came to collaborate with Chaiken, who developed the stories around the characters they gave birth to in ways that were sometimes favorable and other times undesirable; the insider, lesbian-only party that helped to seal the deal with Showtime; and the retrospective and finale.

Friends for twenty years, Abbott and Greenberg spoke with genuine appreciation for one another and what they helped to create, and were surprisingly candid about the show they’ve been so reluctant to discuss until now.
