Pretty girls shouldn't bother with Playboy. It's no longer classy; I mean it actually used to be a classy/trendy thing but now it's like, every voted-off reality star gets a spread, not to mention random people in the news, many of whom no one wants to see in the nude. Sigh.

Agreed. That and they airbrush out EVERYTHING. The models look incredibly fake and nonhuman. It is really unsexy.

I would personally never pose nude, but there is a difference between objectification and empowerment, and I think celebrity nudes ride that fine line. If it had been for a high fashion magazine, no one would cry objectification, but because it's for playboy the word gets bandied about. There are plenty of women who view posing nude as something that's positive and empowering, and I think she's certainly pretty and famous enough that she didn't feel like she had to do this for some reason. I think there are certainly better places to pose nude if you're doing it for genuine, "I love my body, I don't have a problem with nudity" reasons, like, you know, places that don't airbrush out vaginas and beauty marks and freckles, but I think it's a little unfair to cry objectification the second someone takes their clothes off.

Oh, I completely agree that not all nudity is objectification. I welcome it in the right kind of film (I'm French, for chrissakes) and magazine shoots -- Kate Moss recently did a beautiful topless spread in Vogue. But those photographs were catering to a more refined appreciation of the female body. The intended audience here couldn't be more different, you have to admit that 95% of the people who buy Playboy are horny men looking for a quick wank. I see nothing empowering in that for a woman. As you say, if you want to show off female sensuality, find a forum that doesn't compromise it on a regular basis. Playboy only ever prints one type of woman, and airbrushes anything that doesn't fit into that fantasy.

theres a big difference between being objectified and this.

i personally look at this (along with any kind of pin-up photography/illustrations for that matter) and i hardly think its meant to objectify. though it is sexually charged, it's a photograph of a beautiful female figure in poses that are hardly quiestionable. all of these photographs are exquisitely done and very tasteful.
