Halle Berry Would Prefer To Adopt In America

Hollywood actress Halle Berry has condemned Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for adopting children from abroad, claiming they have "forgotten" about the youngsters in America. The Oscar winner hopes to become a mom one day and would consider adopting again after taking on ex-husband Eric Benet's daughter India.

She says, "I hope I have children one day - it's not too late. I am looking forward to that.

"Maybe I will adopt somewhere down the road if that is the only way to bring a child into my life.

"There are lots of children that need a home in America. I feel we have forgotten about our own kids. With Brad and Angelina it's whatever works for them."

Yeah, some of the kids in Africa/Asia/etc don't even have food, clean water etc, most Americans "orphas" usually have at least a roof above their head.

In Halle's defense, I seriously doubt she said any of this. She has never so openly slammed another actor, and I doubt she's going to start now over something like adoption.

I don't think that's ignorant for her to have that opinion. We should really focus on matters in our own country first. Yes, that's fine and dandy that they are trying to do a good deed by adopting, but seriously, why NOT our own country? We do have thousands of kids here who need loving homes, too.

The only reason Angelina adopts outside of the country is because the adoption laws are severely strict here. With her past history of mental illness, she doesn't qualify to adopt within the US.

I'm not sure how to take to this. Personally, I don't think anyone should compare one country's conditions to another, mainly because it's different. (Like here, Child Labour seems barbarious and whatnot, but in those countries, it's actually BETTER working conditions than what is the "usual", etc.)

Personally, I would have rather died than gone without a stable living enviroment (I'm adopted.) It's hard for ANY child to not have a family, or to be moved from one family or another. And especially in America, where things are very rich an extravagant and based on heritage and whatnot. Yes, it's hard for children here too.

Not everything revolves around food and shelter. If it were that easy than many problems would be fixed in this world.

There are so many sex offenders, abusers (physical/drug/mental/etc), stupid people, etc. here... I don't think ANY country should have priority, but I also don't think people should say that American orphans are more priviledged therefore should go on the back burner. Just because they have food doesn't mean that's going to give them a happy, fulfilling life. And isn't that what everyone persues? (Well, at least here in America and other non-3rd-world countries)

Sorry if this is a confusing post, I'm semi tired, and I hate it when people compare a post-industrialization country to one that is still agricultural or even just a developing country.

How would I suggest this be fixed in other nations? Education. Not adoption from other nations. EDUCATION.

And there are also children around the world who needs home. To say anything about someone who chooses to adopt based on the country they choose to adopt from is very, very dumb.

i agree, to an extent, with halle but conditions are usually worse for third world children than kids in america; at least many orphanages in america are civilized from what i know. i dunno, you guys can correct me if i'm wrong.

there are no orphanages in america. kids are placed in the child welfare system, where they are either in temporary, large facilities to be moved into foster homes, or are just put in foster care. from there they are often bounced around from home to home. very few kids in the foster system ever get adopted. and most of the facilities for kids are for children who had to be removed from the home and no one would take them, or they had to be removed because they have behavioral problems but cannot go into juvie.

on top of that, some kids don't go back with their parents, but also never get a stable homelife. foster kids are removed from the system at 18 and are then forced out into the world, with extreme disadvantages compared to other children.

i would think that kids in america are still a hell of a lot better off than the kind of kids brangelina adopt - they're capable of getting a job and a home, however shitty it may be.

BUT the way the foster 'care' system works is ass-backwards. People will want to adopt a child they are fostering but are not allowed to because of arbitrary guidelines that are just ridiculous. Many times they are moved to another foster home. That's the way it works--the more kids in the foster system, the more government money the system gets. It's set up to work against those kids getting adopted. Totally disgusting.
