'We're no crueler than normal': 'Idol' judges

PASADENA, Calif. -- "American Idol" judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul say they're no crueler than usual this year, and that people who audition should know what they're going to get.

"If you don't want to hear that, don't show up," Cowell told television writers at a news conference on Saturday.

The talent show returned with a storm this past week, with episodes on Tuesday and Wednesday attracting around 37 million viewers. The episodes featured auditions by the good, the bad and the awful from Minneapolis and Seattle.

Cowell, whose reputation for blunt, nasty put-downs was established at the series' beginning, was in peak form, telling one contestant that his singing was horrendous and he looked like a "bush baby." Jackson told one contestant his audition was awful and perhaps ruined his business.

"You shouldn't be a vocal teacher," Jackson said. "I wouldn't take vocal lessons from you, I wouldn't tell anybody to take vocal lessons from you."

On ABC's "The View" this past week, Rosie O'Donnell lashed out at the way contestants were treated by "three millionaires, one probably intoxicated."

"If you keep serving people crap and telling them it's a meal, they're eventually going to think it is a meal," O'Donnell said.

Jackson said the judges are continually surprised at how people who should know they can't sing show up thinking they have a chance. They should see what it takes by the people who have won before, he said.

"I think they're aware that they're not very good and they're going to have a bad time," Cowell said.

Jackson cited William Hung, who won fame through his famously bad "She Bang" audition a few years back. "Do you think that William Hung is mad that he came on the show?" he asked.

During the Seattle audition, the show aired a performance of "God Bless America" by Jonathan Jayne, who was criticized by the judges. The New York Times later reported that Jayne had said he had appeared in Special Olympics, an event for the mentally challenged.

Ken Warwick, one of the show's producers, said it was not possible to look into the backgrounds of everyone on the show.

Abdul also faced questions Saturday about a television appearance, circulated through a YouTube clip, where she appeared loopy. She blamed the appearance on technical difficulties that made her hear questions from two different reporters in her earpiece at the same time.

"I was being light," she said.

Peter Liguori, Fox entertainment president, said the judges know what makes "Idol" and that this is just the continuation of a successful formula.

"Let's face it, the show has been on the air six years, the judges have been critical for six years," he said.

The judges' harsh assessments also were defended by Geffen Records chairman Ron Fair, who is about to take on a Cowell-like role on an upcoming talent show for the CW network, "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll."

"In order to have a reputation and continue in a healthy manner in this business, you have to tell people `no' all day long," he said. "I'm telling people 'I'm not going to sign you, that song is not a hit' ... And there's no gracious or wonderful way to tell somebody, whose hopes and dreams are on the line: `no.'"

The people that audition for American idol know that there's a large chance the judges are going to be cruel to them. It's really no shock.
[info]southernoracle 21st-Jan-2007 09:30 pm (UTC)
I second that. More so this season than ever, I think they are paying ringers to come in *specifically* for the judges to have something to talk about. If none of the contestants in a city can sing, but yet they aren't hideous enough to make fun of, where is the tv entertainment in that? And what's the one thing the whole country has been talking about this week? *ding* AI! Mission accomplished.

I think enough is sugar coated in America.

They know what they're signing on for.

They HAVE to know they're awful sometimes.
[info]dedebee 21st-Jan-2007 09:00 pm (UTC)
Rosie, please do America a favor and STFU.
[info]no_distractions 22nd-Jan-2007 12:09 am (UTC)
Seriously.

She is so fucking annoying. We get it. You're a lesbian and you have a problem with just about everything in America. Now, go home.
[info]kvetch_kvetch 21st-Jan-2007 09:01 pm (UTC)
they deserve to be made fun of for actually thinking they can sing.
[info]queen_norleans 21st-Jan-2007 09:22 pm (UTC)
Ha, I LOLed.
[info]kimlina 21st-Jan-2007 10:23 pm (UTC)
but maybe they are mentally ill or mentally challenged?
[info]mercystars 21st-Jan-2007 11:21 pm (UTC)
I don't understand why they'd go on expecting NOT to be made fun of. Why don't their friends tell them they suck??? Surely their friends know they can't sing...
[info]shanny_w 21st-Jan-2007 09:02 pm (UTC)
They all look so happy in those pics lol
[info]queen_norleans 21st-Jan-2007 09:23 pm (UTC)
Because they're under the delusion that they're talented. :x
[info]shanny_w 22nd-Jan-2007 01:55 am (UTC)
lol do you remember that show where they took really bad singers and made them believe that they were good? They would tell the people who were good in the auditions that they sucked and the bad people they would tell them that they were great :(
[info]his_for_life 21st-Jan-2007 09:04 pm (UTC)
The judges are there to judge their singing, not their appearance. I can agree that they are being a little cruel, even if I can agree with what they're saying. I still wouldn't want to be that person, being humiliated on national TV.
[info]_crystalmyth 21st-Jan-2007 09:52 pm (UTC)
As bad as it is, they're looking for the next AMERICAN IDOL (cue flashy confetti and stuff)...which means their looks will eventually play a role in how America votes. Like last season.. I knew Mandisa wasn't going to win. I so wanted her to, cuz I'm a big girl too and for once...I wanted to see one of us on the top, ya know? I was impressed with how far she made it, and utterly shocked at how far Elliot Yamin went (you know.. the teeth). They're looking for someone with the WHOLE package. While they'll usually send someone to Hollywood that doesn't have the looks of Kelly Clarkson...they sometimes don't make it that far.

P.S. Ruben Studdard was another exception, lol.
[info]vaysha 22nd-Jan-2007 05:33 am (UTC)
I agree and hate to say it but some of these people didn't even seem very presentable. The girl in glasses and gold top for example could have at least worn a bra.
=/
[info]his_for_life 23rd-Jan-2007 11:35 am (UTC)
Oh, I understand and agree completely, but I still don't feel the judges should be that cold. It's obvious that some of those people, let's just say, aren't "fortunate" looking, but saying they look like bushbabies and talking about their looks in that way is just wrong. They can't control how they look. If they were just fat, that would be a whole different story. I can understand them being given a "no" because of that as well but the judges shouldn't make nasty comments and chuckle about it after they leave the room, IMO.
[info]eleanora_ 21st-Jan-2007 10:49 pm (UTC)
Actually they're there to evaluate the marketability or otherwise of potential products. Looks come into that. They can be cruel, though.
[info]penny_layne_ 23rd-Jan-2007 03:03 am (UTC)
People who audition after the first season should expect to be judged by appearance.
Also the whole entertainment industry is very focused on appearance, attractiveness just sells better.
[info]ems 21st-Jan-2007 09:04 pm (UTC)
I read somewhere that all the auditionees who you see on the TV have actually already been auditioned by the production team - they let through the good ones and the really crazy, shit ones. Don't know if that's true of American Idol, but if it is, you've got to feel kind of sorry for them; someone's basically told them they're good enough to go through and then they've got crazy Paula Abdul telling them they're shit.
[info]invisible_cunt 21st-Jan-2007 09:08 pm (UTC)
yeah it's true. they go to one producer and they either say yes or no. then you go to another producer. if you get through both producers then you go to the judges. obviously they put through bad ones for entertainment value.
but i think that process is stupid. they should give everyone an equal chance. for all we know, there are probably AMAZING singers that aren't getting through who deserve too.
it's such a corrupt show.

[info]ilovemeganm 21st-Jan-2007 09:08 pm (UTC)
yep i went to auds with my cousins just to watch and it's insane.
there are like 50,000 people and they go four at a time in front of these asshole judges who don't even look you in the eye.

and if they don't like you even 10 seconds into your song they say NEXT and that's it. sometimes they won't even wait for you to sing, if you look like a fool or disabled/in a costume they automatically put you through bc it's good tv.
[info]thenewzero78 21st-Jan-2007 09:29 pm (UTC)
It goes so far that there are some auditioning producers that are specifically looking for shit singers and nutjobs, and will pass on any good singer, no matter how talented.
[info]rhomea 21st-Jan-2007 10:11 pm (UTC)
do you think anyone honestly believes that paula, simon and randy audition the 15 thousand people who come to each city one by one?
[info]kimlina 21st-Jan-2007 10:23 pm (UTC)
it is true and it's horrible
[info]ohshiny 22nd-Jan-2007 01:34 am (UTC)
yepp.
[info]glamtasticlove 22nd-Jan-2007 03:36 am (UTC)
I heard something like that years ago - that SUCKS if its true! :(
[info]bcbgirls 21st-Jan-2007 09:05 pm (UTC)
shut up simon and have sex with me ~oh la la~
[info]no_distractions 22nd-Jan-2007 12:10 am (UTC)
you must have a "daddy beat me" complex :/
[info]bcbgirls 22nd-Jan-2007 02:41 am (UTC)
what exactly do you mean
[info]rockalone1985 21st-Jan-2007 09:05 pm (UTC)
Ok, I know Idol just started, and theres like 50000 articles about it, but they all seem to be saying the same thing... do they ALL need to be posted?!
[info]pandaklr 21st-Jan-2007 09:21 pm (UTC)
just what i was thinking, it's tired.
[info]ilovemeganm 21st-Jan-2007 09:06 pm (UTC)
i really understand both sides of the situation. part of me feels like, well it's their own choice lolol but ANOTHER side is like that one guy (who made friends on the show with the bulging eye guy) and his boss commented on rosie's blog and said that he bags groceries and her store is disabled and a really sweet person who didn't deserve to be made fun of :(((((((

it really sucks because that's not funny :(
idk guys but i still love american idol
[info]no_distractions 22nd-Jan-2007 12:11 am (UTC)
oh man, now i feel bad. That guy is mentally disabled? We don't need to be making fun of mentally handicapped people to get our laughs.
[info]vaysha 22nd-Jan-2007 05:36 am (UTC)
they were actually kinder to him than the guy with the bulging eyes though- man...it's a tough call and I am with you I can see both sides.
I felt some of the contestants didn't even make much effort to be a little more presentable. You know, you dress up a bit for a job interview can you not wear a bra maybe or a pair of jeans that aren't torn in the knees?
[info]ex_lovergir 21st-Jan-2007 09:06 pm (UTC)
You could lie in a bath with your mouth open

lol ilu Simon.
[info]mrskulash 21st-Jan-2007 09:07 pm (UTC)
there's no need to be as cruel as they are. i'm a mean bitch and i'm saying this.
[info]vendettav 21st-Jan-2007 09:07 pm (UTC)
That first guy gives off a B Peppers feeling
[info]shining_stars_ 22nd-Jan-2007 02:36 am (UTC)
That's what I thought when I first saw him on tv
[info]nvmdthebllcks 21st-Jan-2007 09:07 pm (UTC)
I agree with Simon. People should not audition unprepared for harsh criticism.
[info]warmred 22nd-Jan-2007 01:06 am (UTC)
...and for some reason, all the contestants seem to be ready to lash at Simon, when in fact, usually, it's Paula or Randy who giggles and laughs at their performance first. Simon just keeps quiet until he has something really mean to say, but Simon saying something really mean isn't really a big surprise.
[info]smokeandwine 21st-Jan-2007 09:09 pm (UTC)
As I said before: just because they've always done it doesn't make it right.
[info]lisa_lovegood 21st-Jan-2007 09:09 pm (UTC)
The bushbaby comment was kind of mean, but honestly, if these people that believe they are ~AMAZING SINGERS~ want to be the next American Idol so badly they've obviously seen the show before and know what types of things the judges say. So suck it up.
