People's Top Fives of the Year

JANET JACKSON

Shedding 60 lbs. through five-day-a-week workouts took the 40-year old pop star from heavy to hot this year.

ASHLEE SIMPSON

Jettisoning her old punk style – and her old profile – the singer debuted a sleeker, sexier look this summer.

JENNIFER HUDSON

After gaining more than 20 lbs. for her Golden Globe-nominated role as Effie in Dreamgirls, the former Idol shed the weight and embraced a more glamorous red-carpet style.

CAMERON DIAZ

The quintessential blonde California girl threw everyone for a loop – dyeing her normally sunny locks a dark chocolate brown.

WHITNEY HOUSTON

Just two weeks after filing for divorce from husband Bobby Brown, a shockingly glam Whitney Houston stepped out with music mogul Clive Davis, sparking hope of a major comeback.

5. PATRICK VS. ISAIAH
Sure, they save lives in the operating room of Grey's Anatomy. But in October, when the two were preparing to film a scene, Dempsey and Washington were at each other's throats. Harsh words were traded ("I lost my cool," Washington admitted to PEOPLE), but in the end no punches were thrown. And, because of the incident, Dempsey told Oprah Winfrey: "I think the whole company's tighter."

4. LINDSAY VS. PARIS
If Paris and Nicole could make peace, isn't there hope for Lohan and Hilton? A guy -- Paris's on-again beau Stavros Niarchos, with whom Lohan reportedly had a fling -- was reportedly at the root of the ladies' beef. But Lindsay and Paris run hot and cold: On Nov. 27, a day after the two had yet another row, they hit L.A. hot spot Guy's with Britney Spears, and they've been spotted together since.

3. SHANNA VS. PARIS
The claws came out when the Dancing with the Stars star and the hotel heiress exchanged words -- and, reportedly, blows -- on Oct. 4 at L.A.'s Hyde Lounge. The catalyst for it all? Hilton had been spotted smooching with Moakler's ex, rocker Travis Barker, at various hot spots. Don't mess with my man!

2. MICHAEL VS. RUSH
In October, when conservative talk-show host Limbaugh suggested that Fox exaggerated his Parkinson's disease-related tremors in an ad for a Democratic politician (he was "either off his medication or acting," Limbaugh said), Fox shot back that his medication was working "really well" and his rep called Limbaugh's remarks "shameful." In a half-apology, Limbaugh said he was sorry if Fox wasn't acting -- but accused the actor of allowing his illness to be exploited.

1. ROSIE VS. DONALD
O'Donnell stirred the pot on The View when she mocked Trump for acting like a "moral compass for 20-year-olds in America" when he allowed Miss USA Tara Conner to keep her crown after reports emerged of her alleged alcohol and drug abuse. Likening him to a snake-oil salesman, she ranted about his failed marriages and financial well-being. Trump's response? "Rosie's a loser," he told PEOPLE, threatening a lawsuit. "I look forward to taking lots of money from my nice fat little Rosie." Stay tuned...

TREND TO LOSE: SKULLS

The punk staple got a too-cutesy spin this year as the must-have motif, appearing on everything from Mischa Barton's cardigan to dog sweaters.

TREND TO KEEP: BALLET FLATS

This is the rare fashion statement that's both cute and comfy, showing up on the well-heeled feet of Kate Moss among many others.

TREND TO LOSE: HEADSCARVES

Chalk it up to the '80s revival sweeping young Hollywood – from Lindsay Lohan (left) to Nicole Richie, starlets were making like Axl Rose in colorful headscarves and oversize sunglasses.

TREND TO KEEP: LOOSE MINIDRESSES

A look that appeared on almost every spring runway, this short and sweet look – as Ashlee Simpson demonstrates – has legs for next year.

TREND TO LOSE: VESTS

Menswear-inspired clothing can be a hard thing for most women – even the always-lovely Anne Hathaway – to pull off without looking like they borrowed their boyfriend's wardrobe. What a drag!

TREND TO KEEP: BUBBLE DRESSES

Sarah Michelle Gellar dazzles in the newest – and hottest – silhouette of the year, which will still look fresh this spring.

TREND TO LOSE: HIP BELTS

How many women really want to draw more attention to their hips? If Sandra Bullock can't pull this look off, we think we'll pass.

TREND TO KEEP: POLKA DOTS

A fresh alternative to floral, Eva Longoria knows that this retro-inspired pattern looks fresh and vibrant for all seasons.

TREND TO LOSE: KNEE SOCKS

Let's leave this one to the children – Las Vegas star Molly Sims gambles on this youthful trend and ends up looking more like a first-grader than an A-lister.

TREND TO KEEP: ANKLE BOOTS

Gwyneth Paltrow knows how to show off her perfectly toned legs – in cropped boots that add a fresh twist to minidresses.

5. REESE & RYAN
Just days after they announced their split -- after seven years of marriage and two kids (Ava, 7, and Deacon, 3) -- Phillippe told PEOPLE: "I'm not a perfect person, but I'm not guilty of a lot of the things I have been accused of." Still, the Flags of Our Fathers star brushed off reports that an alleged relationship with Australian actress Abbie Cornish was the catalyst for their demise.

4. WHITNEY & BOBBY
As Whitney would say, "Hell to the no!" But the Grammy-winning singer decided it was "hell to the yes" when she filed for separation on Sept. 8 and a month later filed for divorce from her bad-boy husband Brown. The couple survived a reality show (Being Bobby Brown), rehab and run-ins with the law, but Houston finally decided it was her prerogative to end her 14-year marriage.

3. HEATHER & PAUL
Things got really ugly after McCartney and Mills announced their separation in May, and he filed for divorce in July after four years of marriage. The land-mine activist claimed the ex-Beatle had been abusive to her. Tabloids posted topless photos from her younger days. Tired of sensational reports that she was after his estimated $1.8 billion fortune, Mills told TV's Extra in November, "Eighty-five percent of my income goes to my charity. The word gold-digger doesn't go with that."

2. JEN & VINCE
Their first parting of the ways played out onscreen in The Break-Up. But Aniston and Vaughn conducted their 14-month-long relationship as far from the media glare as possible. During their courtship, they battled engagement rumors (Oprah's throwing them an $8 million wedding!) and talk that they'd split long before their reps' Dec. 5 announcement. In the end, they remained just "good friends."

1. BRITNEY & KEVIN
Two years of marriage, two babies (Sean Preston, 1, and Jayden James, 3 months) and it was kaput for Spears and Federline when she filed for divorce on Nov. 7. Of course, the rumor mill had been predicting it all along. Now, Spears is reliving her single life on the town with new BFFs including Paris Hilton while Fed-Ex makes the rounds with his rap crew.

5. BEYONCÉ

Paging Beyoncé: Jane Fonda – circa 1968 – wants her getup back. The pop singer channels Barbarella, the sci-fi queen, in this black, ruched number. But those ankle boots – and, worse, that lazy bouffant – prove the only battle the singer should be fighting is with her stylist.

4. EVA MENDES

"I don't usually do updos," Eva Mendes told PEOPLE about her hair choice for the Costume Institute Gala she attended. And while playing it safe doesn't always pay off, this time Mendes should have stuck with what she knew. Plus, that high-collared dress is too costume-like for comfort. You're a guest at the ball, Eva, not an exhibit!

3. EVA LONGORIA

Sure, Eva Longoria's pre-Thanksgiving appearance on Good Morning America found the Desperate Housewives star heading to the kitchen for a food-related segment. And while the holiday spirit is admirable, dressing like a pilgrim just isn't.

2. KEIRA KNIGHTLEY

Can you guess what Keira was thinking with this ensemble? Perhaps she desperately craved a sundress but instead she only had a gauzy, patterned skirt, which she then hiked up to her chest and fastened with a hefty, vintage belt in lieu of a bra. That kind of bondage pains us just to see.

1. MISCHA BARTON

Mischa Barton is nothing if not a courageous dresser, but there is simply nothing brave about these bowtie "diaper shorts" that the former O.C. star paired with a jagged, cut men's undershirt and accented with her jutting hip-bones.

5. MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY'S DEODORANT DEFENSE
PEOPLE's 2005 Sexiest Man Alive spent most of the year sans shirt -- running, doing push-ups, climbing stairs and working out with pal Lance Armstrong. His outdoor activities were roguishly charming, but then McConaughey admitted that he never wears deodorant. "Who wants to go around smelling like somebody's name brand?" he said. At least no one will be whistling the Old Spice jingle around him.

4. TERI HATCHER TOES THE LINE
The beauty of the body has inspired plenty of fine literature -- and Teri Hatcher's self-love inspired her to wax romantic earlier this year in her memoir, Burnt Toast: And Other Philosophies About Life. "For the record, I like my toes just fine," Teri Hatcher writes. "Not as much as my nipples, but they're still suckworthy." We give her credit for diving into the literary world, feet-first.

3. DANNY DeVITO'S TELL-ALL VIEW INTERVIEW
Danny DeVito was definitely loveable as he slurred his way through an interview on The View after a rowdy night out with George Clooney. But then the diminutive actor took it a step further -- sharing secrets from the bedroom after a trip to the White House with wife Rhea Perlman. One may never view the Lincoln Bedroom in quite the same way.

2. LINDSAY LOHAN'S GUY TALK
Lindsay Lohan's recent e-mail missives may take a page from Carrie Bradshaw, but when it comes to her love life, Lohan may veer closer to Mr. Big from Sex and the City. "I've become like the guy in relationships," she told Harper's Bazaar magazine earlier this year. "Lately I just cannot be in a monogamous relationship." (Too much information? Or just enough information for prospective boyfriends?) "But," she adds, take heart: "There are people I want to date."

1. BRITNEY SPEARS'S OVEREXPOSURE
While Britney Spears seems to have learned some lessons recently (e.g. going out in public fully clothed), the singer certainly sparked this year's biggest controversy when she showed the world more than they bargained for. Spears has since made light of her public flashing, saying on her official Web site: "Thank God for Victoria's Secret's new underwear line."

5. CHRISTINA & JORDAN

Their wedding anniversary
To celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary, Aguilera, 26, and Bratman, 29, booked a return trip in November to Dublin, Ireland, where the couple first got engaged. Bratman reportedly filled the couple's hotel room with pink and red balloons and roses, recreating the scene of their engagement. No wonder the pop singer has dedicated her single "Ain't No Other Man" to her guy, whom she calls her "backbone."

4. JENNIFER & MARC

Their onstage duet
Two years after their secret wedding ceremony in June 2005, Lopez, 37, and Anthony, 38, are beginning to offer the public a glimpse inside their marriage. At Anthony's Madison Square Garden concert in August, Lopez joined her husband onstage to sing the tender ballad "No Me Ames" to end the show. When asked what makes their personal and professional collaborations work, Anthony revealed, "Just simple love."

3. EVA & TONY

Her lucky number in love
Longoria, 31, wears her love for fiancé, NBA star Tony Parker, 24, on her sleeve – and everywhere else. She sported his San Antonio Spurs jersey number all over the place, from the diamond "9" pendant Parker gave her last Christmas to her customized T-Mobile Sidekick II with the digit in silver crystals. It must have been a good-luck charm: Parker surprised the Desperate Housewife in November with a candlelit proposal – and a 5-carat-plus emerald-cut diamond ring.

2. ANGELINA & BRAD

Her b-day gift to him
What do you get a movie star birthday boy who has everything? It's a dilemma Angelina Jolie, 31, knows well. "He's so hard to buy for," Jolie has said of boyfriend Brad Pitt (who turned 43 on Dec. 18). She settled on a fitting choice: A trip to Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece, Fallingwater, where it seemed to even snow on cue, creating a winter wonderland for the couple's tour.

1. TOM & KATIE

Their wedding ceremony
After famously debuting their romance in Rome in April 2005, it was only fitting that Cruise, 44, and Holmes, 28, would return to Italy to marry in true fairytale fashion. Their Nov. 18 nuptials, held at a 15th century castle in Bracciano, Italy, lived up to all the hype, with 150 guests (including Will Smith, Brooke Shields and Victoria Beckham), 400 feet of crinoline and tulle (in Holmes's Armani wedding gown), and a dramatic fireworks display to cap things off.

5. PARIS & STAVROS
Hilton and Niarchos split in May after 7 months. They reconnected—temporarily—in July. By December, they were in full-on make-out mode (lap dances included!) at a South Beach, Fla., nightclub. A source close to Hilton tells PEOPLE that this time around, "Not only are she and Stavros together, but they are in love."

4. PAM & KID
When they first hooked up in April 2001, Rock crowed at the Kentucky Derby, "Wanna meet the hottest chick in the world?" A year later, he popped the question (for the first time) to Anderson. They finally made it official five years later aboard a yacht in Saint-Tropez, only to jump ship on the marriage four months later. Anderson shared the news of her breakup in a captain's log (of sorts), posted on her Web site: "11/27/2006. Divorce. Yes, it's true. Unfortunately impossible."

3. JUDE & SIENNA
Things were never the same for Law and Miller after last year's Nanny Gate. But the tumultuous pair couldn't stay apart (or together) for long, keeping their roller-coaster romance going until a month ago, when they finally pulled the plug on the three-year relationship—for real, says a Law pal.

2. NICOLE & DJ AM
After dating for more than a year, Richie and Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein announced their engagement in February 2005. By December, the wedding was called off. Fast track to March, the pair were spotted holding hands all over Los Angeles and even vacationing together in Los Cabos, Mexico. Two months later, Richie and Goldstein changed their tune again, this time for good.

1. TONY & EVA
It was "lust at first sight," Longoria says of her meeting with fiancé Parker in November 2004. But with busy careers and a long-distance romance, love couldn't keep them together. After a brief split in September, the NBA star surprised the Desperate Housewife two months later with a marriage proposal—and a five-carat-plus emerald-cut diamond ring.

"1. BRITNEY & KEVIN"
Was that really a huge shock?
[info]telegram_ 2nd-Jan-2007 01:30 am (UTC)
LMAO. Thank you so much for your icon. Although it should seriously have the "falafel" statement in there.
[info]dear_endeavor 2nd-Jan-2007 02:32 pm (UTC)
I wish it said something about not wanting to eat chinese food on their date. It would of made it 110 times better. Its just a fact.
[info]space7cadet 2nd-Jan-2007 03:00 am (UTC)
i waas just reading his email the other day and it made me lol
[info]jenjen1026 2nd-Jan-2007 03:11 am (UTC)
my thoughts exactly. ryan and reese should be number one!
[info]lerrrr 2nd-Jan-2007 03:17 am (UTC)
what is the whole "youll cum 1000 times harder..." quote from????? i obviously missed some legendary post becasue people keep talking about it
[info]larca 2nd-Jan-2007 05:22 am (UTC)
ahahaha I love your icon.
[info]sub_silencio 2nd-Jan-2007 12:03 am (UTC)
Cameron Diaz looks good in the before picture
[info]are_you_him 2nd-Jan-2007 12:56 am (UTC)
I agreee.
[info]marierebecca 2nd-Jan-2007 12:04 am (UTC)
"lust at first sight,"

lol. What a wonderful, solid foundation for a marriage. Good going.
[info]dulcinea12 2nd-Jan-2007 12:56 am (UTC)
on the other hand, I do appreciate their honesty. As my mom, married for almost 30 years, once pointed out about my boyfriend, caring about someone is all well and good, but it'll only get you so far unless you also happen to think they're unbelievably hot. ;p

but I'm also one of those people who throws up a little bit every time someone talks about 'love at first sight.' I'm just glad Eva said something different, heh.
[info]lo_hung_wang 2nd-Jan-2007 12:04 am (UTC)
I love vests done right and high socks.

But they did get the worst dressers right.
[info]retrowaster 2nd-Jan-2007 12:13 am (UTC)
I know!! I would die without kneesocks. and I do look good in vests. Dude, it is possible for "regular people" to pull off shit that celebrities can't. In fact, I rarely look to celebrities for fashion insights. Or shitty lists like this :( And since when were ballet flats really a trend? They've been "hot" or... just there... for a while
[info]j3551c44 2nd-Jan-2007 03:48 am (UTC)
Is it possible to wear kneesocks w/o a skirt? =3 Because I look really bad in them.
[info]bienenkiste 2nd-Jan-2007 12:16 am (UTC)
IAWTC. High socks can be cute
[info]yogaspazz 2nd-Jan-2007 01:06 am (UTC)
haha what an appropriate icon!
I love vests and knee socks, too. I think Anne Hathaway looks good there, even if vests are generally more flattering on women with smaller chests.
[info]xsatinex 2nd-Jan-2007 02:21 am (UTC)
i love vests too. and despite what this list says I'm going to keep wearing them.

i say go with what you like & looks good on you and fuck what the magazines say.
[info]thekatiefactor 2nd-Jan-2007 03:20 am (UTC)
Same, I love vests and knee socks. I don't like Anne's entire outfit there, but she looks good from the waist up.
[info]suwillgetu 2nd-Jan-2007 12:04 am (UTC)
I wish Ashlee kept her old look : (
[info]lolmodelbitch 2nd-Jan-2007 12:05 am (UTC)
oh god no. faux punk is gross, especially on her
[info]retrowaster 2nd-Jan-2007 12:14 am (UTC)
Yeah, but now I honestly can't tell the difference between her and the zillions of blonde drones exactly like her. I wish she kept her nose, too ;( :( :( :(
[info]are_you_him 2nd-Jan-2007 12:57 am (UTC)
iawtc
[info]sparkoflove 2nd-Jan-2007 05:41 am (UTC)
me too. i thought she looked better, REAL, before.
[info]thisistribute 2nd-Jan-2007 12:04 am (UTC)
lol vests were in style?

good god women are crazy
[info]lolmodelbitch 2nd-Jan-2007 12:04 am (UTC)
ANKLE BOOTS FTW!!!!!
[info]telegram_ 2nd-Jan-2007 01:32 am (UTC)

[info]pit_fashn 2nd-Jan-2007 01:32 am (UTC)
WTCIA
[info]gett3 2nd-Jan-2007 12:05 am (UTC)
STARVOS NACHOS!!!1

I cant help but think of his name like that.
[info]dear_endeavor 2nd-Jan-2007 12:08 am (UTC)
now i'm starving for some nachos :[
[info]askmehowifeel 2nd-Jan-2007 12:17 am (UTC)
lol i always read "Starving Nachos."
[info]zanzou_chan 2nd-Jan-2007 01:48 am (UTC)
XD Me too. Every time.
[info]lo_hung_wang 2nd-Jan-2007 12:06 am (UTC)
Oh and I think Janet was on catabolic steroids. I get fit for a living and her body just could not happen like it did.
[info]ex_lovergir 2nd-Jan-2007 12:06 am (UTC)
lol @ Eva. She looks 50.
[info]korova 2nd-Jan-2007 12:06 am (UTC)
ugh, keep bubble dresses and ankle boots and lose vests and kneesocks? no thanks.
[info]lo_hung_wang 2nd-Jan-2007 12:08 am (UTC)
Oh I LOVE you!
[info]korova 2nd-Jan-2007 04:04 pm (UTC)
ilu too, bb!
[info]colormebadd 2nd-Jan-2007 12:12 am (UTC)
Seriously. Bubble dresses and ankle boots are really unflattering.
[info]edible_complex 2nd-Jan-2007 12:20 am (UTC)
Sarah Michelle Geller looks awful!
[info]radix_lecte 2nd-Jan-2007 12:30 am (UTC)
Seriously! They're both hideous.
[info]anjoliena 2nd-Jan-2007 01:42 am (UTC)
I agreeeee
And vests are way hot if they're worn right. I think Anne looks nice in the vest pic
[info]thekatiefactor 2nd-Jan-2007 03:21 am (UTC)
iawtc!!!
[info]milkradio 2nd-Jan-2007 05:51 am (UTC)
iawtc
[info]odayski 2nd-Jan-2007 07:52 am (UTC)
♥ U!
[info]ninjarina 2nd-Jan-2007 08:34 pm (UTC)
Ugh, seriously

SMG looks like she's wearing a jellyfish and ankle boots make 90% of the female population look stumpy w/ wide calves unless it's done under jeans.

And wtf is up w/ headscarves? The only woman who could ever really pull that off was Erykah Badu anyway.

Ashlee looks horrible in that picture.
[info]chung_____chung 2nd-Jan-2007 12:06 am (UTC)
i hate it when things arent labelled after the cut because i dont know what these lists are. i mean, i can figure it out after reading it but id like to know whether or not i want to read it in the first place.

and ankle boots are the absolute worst trend ever. i cant believe they are suggesting to "keep" this
[info]numb_crystal 2nd-Jan-2007 12:22 am (UTC)
i hate it when things arent labelled after the cut because i dont know what these lists are. i mean, i can figure it out after reading it but id like to know whether or not i want to read it in the first place.

i agree. the bottom lists aren't even labeled before the cut either, so who knows what they're referring to
[info]chung_____chung 2nd-Jan-2007 12:36 am (UTC)
yeah, the last list makes no sense. there is nothing cohesive about it. if i knew what the title was, it would help
[info]chrisgold 2nd-Jan-2007 12:25 am (UTC)
I love ankle boots but I agree about the cut thing.
[info]maidenhell 2nd-Jan-2007 12:47 am (UTC)
Agreed on all parts...I also question any publication that lists "bubble dresses" as a trend to keep. :/
[info]dulcinea12 2nd-Jan-2007 12:58 am (UTC)
seriously, I think ankle boots are fantastic... when they're used to pretend you're wearing regular-length boots. Under pants, as the good lord intended them. Not with tiny skirts; it just looks like a total accident.
[info]elliottsherman 2nd-Jan-2007 01:25 am (UTC)
you stole both my comments. ankle boots are hideous and i was annoyed trying to remember what the "top 5's" stood for.
[info]zanzou_chan 2nd-Jan-2007 01:50 am (UTC)
:( I fixed the cut-problems.... I just got sick of coding shit. This was an annoyingly long post to put together.
[info]lonelyholiday 2nd-Jan-2007 02:22 am (UTC)
and ankle boots are the absolute worst trend ever. i cant believe they are suggesting to "keep" this

Well, in one of the later lists they trash Beyonce's ankle boots, so maybe they're already over them too.
[info]pin_stripe 2nd-Jan-2007 12:08 am (UTC)
who is attracted to Eva? seriously. especially in that "worst-dressed" picture, her face looks gross.
[info]webofglass 2nd-Jan-2007 12:08 am (UTC)
Whoever thought that the bubble dress/skirt was a good idea is a dumbass.
[info]0generator0 2nd-Jan-2007 01:36 am (UTC)
I totally agree with this comment.

They didn't look good in the 80's... and they don't look good now.

How anyone could possibly think a dress/skirt that instantly ads 20-30 pounds is a good idea is beyond me.
[info]queen_norleans 2nd-Jan-2007 12:08 am (UTC)
Jennifer Hudson? SERIOUSLY?

She's still a smug looking cow.
[info]blackstarr82269 2nd-Jan-2007 01:39 am (UTC)
fuck you.
[info]queen_norleans 2nd-Jan-2007 01:46 am (UTC)
Excuse me?

My opinion is just that- my opinion.

So get over it, grow up, and perhaps develop a more extensive vocabulary.
